I'm actually DREADING the Brian bio movie. It'll just turn into another Oliver Stone "The Doors" debacle.  ::)

Oh yes, it'll be Summer Dreams bad but probably with better beards at least. :)

My least favorite part about Summer Dreams was the beards.

I really wouldn't mind either of the horrible TV movies if hardcore fans were the only people that saw them. I'm just afraid they gave casual fans (and people who weren't fans at all) horrible misconceptions about the band, specifically Brian.

Summer Dreams did it for all the band members in my opinion.

It was like you had Brian, The Genius, Mike, The Frontman, Carl, The Chubby One, Dennis, The Wild Man, and some other dude. If I was Al Jardine I'd have sued for slander.

SD is a true cult movie. I don't mind what misconceptions it might have produced: casual fans might have forgotten its contents anyway through all the beer they consumed whilst watching it.
The beards were fabulous. Like: 15 year old boys with ape hair glued to their faces.
And the actor playing Murry should have got an Oscar.

Well I don't mind American Family so much, cause that's what got me interested in the band in the first place (and I know there is another user on here that also got interested due to that film as well)... I think it's okay cause at least it has the actual music and not just some random guys singing & playing... I mean the music is what counts, right?

Is American Family the one where VDP was portrayed as some sort of drug peddler? I recall he got very angry about one of those biopic things...

Yeah I think that's the one.. I haven't seen it for a while though

And a guy named 'Tommy Schaefer' turned Brian on to drugs! :lol :lol :lol

I love that you think of yourself as a Beach Boys user! I too am addicted.

Yes it was indeed "American Family" that Van Dyke got agitated over (and rightfully so, in my opinion).  After the first airing they had to change the character's name because Van Dyke had threatened legal action. 

The problem was that they made him out to be some goateed hippy dude.  The only thing that made him recognizable as VDP was the snappy dialogue.

What was annoying about that though was they were actual quotes, but stuff he said in mostly the 70s (It's OK TV Special) and way out of context.  They did that with Murry too, using stuff he said from the Rhonda session.

Oh, yeah, that was the other thing that annoyed me.  They took a lot of liberties with the time frame, which makes an entertaining story for Joe Public, but for people like us who know much of the real story...urk!  ???

If it makes anyone feel any better, we're still awaiting "Hapworth 16, 1924," too. Although we did get "The Original of Laura" this year, so another long-time holdout bites the dust.

Luther, once again, you and I are on the same page on another subject.  About ten-fifteen years ago I went to Dutton's Books on Hollywood Blvd. once a week to make sure the projected release of Hapworth 16, 1924 was still on track. Yep, still set for September" (or whatever it was). And then, inevitably: "Nope, withdrawn".

"The Original Laura"- are you referring to the Gene Tierney film, or what?

People always like to imagine a world where Smile had been released in 1967, but just imagine a world where BWPS was never released.

Well, the world at large would see little difference, but our little lives would be impacted.

The Vladimir Nabokov would-be novel, released in postcards-draft form this year on the authority of his son Dmitri.

And I think to myself....what a wonderful world.... :-D

Because then we could have more "what if" threads about Smile. Oh, wait...

STARS & STRIPES Vol.2 never happened, thank god.  Would still like to see HAWTHORNE Vol.2 though, & of course the GV box, SMILE box...

I hope you don't mind this little dig the last few Decembers! Its done mainly to highlight releases etc that have been announced either through the media and/ or websites. Of course it is cool to see Al's album removed from the thread this year. What gives with BeachBoysCentral though? Thats been 'coming' for 3 years? Often comments are made here and other sites that your organisation don't know which way is up and the Central site does make me wonder sometimes.

Of course your organisation must be flat out planning some great releases for the 50th next year but would you mind if I add a few more items to the list of announced projects I guess you guys have signed off on?

.Mike and Al both announce a 'reunion'. I know...a little vague and retracted, but where there's smoke!
.Who can forget Stamos and his musical movie. The ladies are extra excited about that one. Will John make a cameo and remove his shirt?

There must be others that I have missed but I'm sure someone will post them here.

All the best for the next 12 months. We can check back then and with a bit of luck cross off some more projects.

I have to admit, as bad as Summer Dreams is, I watched it at age 13 when it was originally broadcast, and it's what made me a REAL fan. I was always a casual fan (I grew up in Hawthorne where the Beach Boys were a staple of provincial  pride) but that movie was the first hint that the sadness that seemed to bubble beneath the surface of the songs was indeed real!

Plus, I really liked (and still do) Bruce Greenwood as Dennis. He played him as a real person and not just some surf stud, screw-up cliche.

i love Summer Dreams. I watch it all the time. the way they screw up the whole Pet Sounds/Smile (and pretty much everything else after 1965) seems sort of innocent, whereas American Family seems to have something of an agenda. I agree with Erik H on Bruce Greenwood's portrayal of Dennis. And the guy that plays Brian in SD is so much better than the guy in American Family. plus SD has the cocaine/hamburger sessions (best scene in the movie)

Fred Weller is the guy who portrayed Brian in An American Family, his performance is an absolute joke.
