Title: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: matt-zeus on December 08, 2008, 06:37:33 AM http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-Satan/dp/B001DGFGQI
I haven't, there was a review in the new Mojo and was wondering is it worth watching, it says it has interviews with Brian about Manson? Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: Shady on December 08, 2008, 06:38:35 AM I'm still waiting for it to pop up on torrent sites :)
Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: The Heartical Don on December 08, 2008, 06:48:55 AM I saw the film when it premiered on German public TV. I don't recall it as being very revolutionary; but perhaps the four star rating at Amazon is adequate for those who always are on the lookout for new footage.
In all: I did not find it bad at all, that is for sure; but since I am not interested in Manson and the Tate/La Bianca murders, perhaps it's not my thing. I always found the descriptions and interpretations of the Manson Family way too 'pretentious', like in: 'the dark side of the hippie dream', 'the free love philosophy gone mad', and so on. My personal view on 'evil' is that it is extremely uninteresting. Mind: it should be fought wherever and whenever possible; but it's like German anti-Nazi writer Tucholsky said: 'Zu Hitler fällt mir nichts ein' ('On Hitler, I can't find any idea inside of me'). There may be nothing at all to be found in the evil mind, and the sociopath may very well act purely on impulse in the absence of moral consciousness (modern neuroscience is very supportive of this view). So maybe 'evil' equates 'nothing'. Sorry for drifting and meandering a bit here. Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: Alex on December 08, 2008, 06:52:15 AM http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-Satan/dp/B001DGFGQI I saw a DVD of this movie at a store in my local mall recently, I almost bought it, but something about it made me really skeptical about the quality of the movie....as big of a BB freak as I am, I didn't buy it.I haven't, there was a review in the new Mojo and was wondering is it worth watching, it says it has interviews with Brian about Manson? That said, I have no idea what a Brian interview about Manson is going to reveal, when it was DENNIS that associated with crazy ol' Charlie. When Howard Stern asked Brian about Manson, Brian said Manson was Dennis' acquaintance and not his, and then tried to change the subject. But I do wonder what Brian says in the interview on this doc. Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: dogear on December 08, 2008, 07:35:52 AM If I remember correctly, I liked the doku quite a bit when it was first shown on German TV in 1997. And don't worry it's NOT entirely about the Manson connection. So the title is misleading indeed.
Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: MBE on December 08, 2008, 04:21:58 PM Brian says nothing about Manson, but it is a funny film unintentionally. Not too bad really.

A small part of me is sad because if that were turned into a full-length DVD, it would crack me up.

I think it was 1991, in the wake of his 'autobiography'. A couple of things point to Landy: he speaks very slurred, as if being on a lot of medication, and his clenching of that pillow could also very well be a more or less 'automated' reflex for basic security. I'll see if I can find it out. Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? I'll see if I can find it out. Certainly not 1995 or 1996! More like 1990/91. 1) First video, 0:42: that's Brian brown Cadillac Seville that Landy made him buy from Melinda... Parked just in front of the same house you can see in the Diane Sawyer doc about Brian's relationship with Landy. 2) In 1995/96 he was much fatter, and didn't have this haircut or these "Landyfized" face expressions. 3) The third video promotes Brian's "autobiography", and Brian has nothing but praise for Landy! Something that would never have happened in 1995 or later. 4) The title of the video says "ca. 1992" ;D Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: mikeyj on December 10, 2008, 01:38:04 AM I have to agree with Sloop... Brian in 95/96 did look a lot more chubbier etc.. and of course as he says the video says "ca. 1992"... I only watched one of the videos but I'm assuming they are both from the same time

However, I would love to see a more elaborate video history of the band, something along the lines of the Beatles anthology. But I suspect the sales might not warrant the effort? What are your thoughts on that Jon? Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: DonnyL on January 12, 2009, 01:41:12 PM The movie is entertaining and intersting, has some cool little songs by Kim Fowley and i would recommend watching it. the circa 96 interviews with Brian are pretty good, he seems more relazed and involved than almost any interviews from recent years. There is also some footage of him from around 91-92 or so, he plays a theremin and gets a little freaked out that he can't stop it from making sounds. Manson is dealt with independently of the Beach Boys and his association with Dennis is not explored. it mainly deals with the "dark side" of so cal cultures etc.

Title: Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? Post by: SG7 on January 12, 2009, 05:29:32 PM Then again that interview was done during probably a not good day. I'm not vouching for Brian, but he probably gets fed up people ask him the same stuff. Plus I have an interview from around that time that was in Dutch I believe (and I wished I saved the link and I didn't) and he talks about heaven and how he wants to be there with them and his family. So I think you get a lot of different answers from him on any given day.
