Title: Hawthorne CA - A Musical Legacy question
Post by: jeffcdo on October 16, 2008, 02:52:37 AM
There's a bonus bit on the Hawthorne CA CD where the boys are singing a capella, it sounds something like "guns align" or perhaps "god's alive"...?  Does anybody know what they are singing?

"Ganz allein." It's German for "all alone". It's the German language version of In My Room.

Since the Beatles had a hit with their German language version of "I want to hold your hand" (="Komm gib mir deine Hand") and many other UK group cut versions in German as well, Capitol probably thought it a good idea for the BB to do the same. They cut it roughly six month after the original (7/16/63 - 3/3/64) The version, which has a slightly longer fade (2'11 - 2'18) was never released, though.
It only saw the light of day on the LDC/SD Vol.2 twofer in 1990 and was pressed the same year as a limited vinyl 45 for the German Fanclub "California Saga" backed with "Land Ahoy" (mispelled Land Ahoi on the label) Capitol mms 6003.
A year later it was officially relased on a 3 track 45 accompanied by the English language version and "I get around"(Capitol 006-2044777).

"Ganz Allein" was also on the "Rarities" LP from 1983.

And The Beatles released two songs in German, they also did "She Loves You" ("Sie Liebt Dich").

Are you talking about the Coda at the very end of disc 2?

The German lyrics can be found:

Where exactly on Hawthorne did you hear it?

It was actually first released in 1983, on the "Rarities" LP.

To stop this thread before it gets any more, ah, spurious - the bonus/hidden track on disc 1 is a live KFWB promo. The hidden track on disc 2 is nothing whatsoever to do with "Ganz Allein". It's the "boys, girls" bvs from "Heroes & Villains" isolated out.

After the last track on each disc - just let the CD run on.

And from the link posted above, here's the English translation:

"It gives a place goes there I Flust´re Freud and suffering All alone, all alone Lock and bolts exclude Fear and concerns here All alone, all alone Dreams here, schmiede of plans Without sleep too fleh´n By my crying and my sighing Laughing look back Darkly ist´s, I am alone but I am not afraid All alone, all alone, all alone…. "

I LOOOOOOOOOVE babelfish. :)

I didn't (and don't) intend for this thread to be "spurious" - I had remembered the "Ganz allein" excerpt being on "Hawthorne" - I guess I was mistaken.  Was it on the Endless Harmony soundtrack?  I'm always confusing those two releases.

So let's clear things up!   As I understand "In My Room" (German version) was on Rarities, it also appears on the Surfer Girl/Shut Down twofer.  What album has just the "Ganz allein" excerpt on it?

The same.  Just let the SG/SD CD run out after "I do."

Ah there it is!  Thank you.  I think I might have set a record here for how many times I can embarrass myself in one thread.

Hey!  You spelled 'embarrass' correctly.  Two 'r's' and two 's'.

You're off the hook in my book!

Errr... Josh, that would be the 2001 remaster, right?
