Title: "obscure" songs in modern BB setlists
Post by: art rush on October 01, 2008, 07:41:24 AM
what are some of the non-hit single tracks that mike and bruce drop into their sets?
i'm aware of:
* 'til i die (LOL at their nerve to play this!)
* all this is that (sounds really sweet)
* disney girls (lol bruce)
* good timin'
* summer in paradise
* somewhere near japan
* it's OK
* sail on sailor

did they ever play "summer of love" live? come on, that would be awesome  ;D

Ballad Of Ole Betsy
When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)
Kiss Me Baby
Let Him Run Wild
The Little Girl I Once Knew
You Still Believe In Me
Here Today
Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring
Everyone's In Love With You
Bluebirds Over The Mountain
Don't Back Down
The Warmth Of The Sun
Forever
Getcha Back
Still Cruisin'

and
Summer Means Fun
Cool Head Warm Heart
I Write The Songs

Good Timin' (#40) , It's OK (#29) and SOS (# 79 and #49) could be considered hits though, albeit minor ones ....

Still no "Feel Flows" or "The Trader", though. Or any SMiLE material sans Good Vibrations and H&V.

Have you actually heard their live rendition of the song ?  They do a damn fine job, and Mike's intro (yes, he mentions Brian) is close to reverential. You might as well chastise Brian for having the nerve to play "Forever", or "Heaven".

Not exactly modern, but in 1980 at The Spectrum in Philadelphis, I saw The Beach Boys perform "Long Tall Texan". Brian was there, and Mike introduced the song "as a request from Brian Wilson". They performed it well, one of the highlights of the concert, mainly because I was stunned that they played it!

I think he was referring to the stories of Mike's dislike for the song when Brian initially wrote it.

Of course, we can never forget that Mike is "Mr. Positivity"!

yeah. i've heard them do it on that newcastle '04 bootleg, it doesn't sound bad at all, it's just such a personal song of brian's. i haven't heard mike's intro though. what does he say?

and let's hear brian do "kokomo"!

On the Warmth Of The Sun podcast ML had some rather nice things to say about 'Til I Die, mostly referring to it as a song about everyone being just mortal. While it is indeed a very personal song, BW's lyrics are very simple, which might add to the song being more appealling to Mike than Surf's Up, for example.

Here's a few more nobody mentioned-

GOOD TO MY BABY
PLEASE LET ME WONDER
GRADUATION DAY (5 years ago?)
FARMERS DAUGHTER (1 year ago)
SALT LAKE CITY (whenever we're there)
HUSHABYE (4 years ago)
COTTONFIELDS (not a hit in US)
PAPA OOM MOW (3 years ago)
FEEL FLOWS (last year)
CHERRY CHERRY COUPE (last week)

And I'm not including any Christmas stuff but there were quite a few 2 years ago.

Any requests?

Scott

so do i. now i think about it if mike sung on it/likes it/plays it these days, do you think the story about mike laughing and being all "no thx" about that song when brian brought it in is true? maybe not.

Good to see ya here, Scott!   I'm hoping to make at least one of the shows at Potowatomi Casino in Milwaukee later this month, but don't know if my finances will allow me to yet.

As for requests, I'll leave that to others.  I'm glad that you are introducing some lesser-known songs that were never performed by the guys back in the day.

The segue from "Let Him Run Wild" to "Little Girl I Once Knew" is classic.  Heard a recording of a show last year and was blown away at that moment.

Hope you stick around, this is a great forum  :)

I'm assuming this is Scott Totten?  It's always nice to see a Beach Boys band member here.  Stop by again, if you're not too busy.  I'm sure that there are folks with questions.

Welcome Scott!!

PAPA OOM MOW (3 years ago)

CHERRY CHERRY COUPE (last week)

And I'm not including any Christmas stuff but there were quite a few 2 years ago.

Nice surprises, especially the middle one.

pfff..... well..... I wouldn't mind a Holland-track or two (apart from SOS)  :)

Hmmm well so many to request..but can you prod Bruce into doing She Believes in Love Again . His voice is a little rougher now and I think it would be just perfect for it.   I will add some others...don't want to overwhelm you

Thats't Not Me
Goin On
Somewhere Near Japan
This Whole World (I think John Cowsill might nail this!)
Add Some Music
Wild Honey (maybe you or Randall on this??)

hello scott   ;D one of the beach boys registered just to post in my thread! i'm honoured.

i reckon the set could do with some more of definitive but lesser-known Mike lead vocal moments like that's not me, it's OK, aren't you glad, meant for you/friends... oh and match point of our love! a overlooked great song. i reckon it would suit bruce's voice great too.

Title: Re:
Post by: John on October 02, 2008, 04:50:50 PM
Brian sang Matchpoint. ;)

Nah, I know what you meant, that you'd like to see Mike sing it now. Just funnin'.

Title: Re: \

Hm, requests...

We'll Run Away
The Trader
Deirdre
and something from Denny's solo career... besides River Song, none of that has ever been played live by any Beach Boy to my knowledge

Title: Re: \

Definitely gotta do We'll Run Away!
also Big Sur, All I wanna Do, or any song where Mike sings in his 'calm' style. Bruce ought to sing some Rip Chords/Bruce & Terry stuff. Hope to see M&B soon!

Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome to the board,  and for the great suggestions!  We actualy did work up Friends last year but it never made it into a show.  And Caroline No sung by yours truly but we ran into curfew problems in the UK.

Tpesky will be gald to know that we are rehearsing This Whole World!

Well according to a quote by Bruce in David Leaf's book he says something about how a certain member (although of course he doesn't mention who) of the band didn't like the song and put it down and then Brian didn't go near the song for a few months as he was (in Bruce's words) "crushed". So whether or not it was Mike, SOMEONE obviously didn't like it.

Hey Scott!  Good to see you here!  I'm still going to stick with "Keepin The Summer Alive" as my request!  Also I didn't know that "Papa Oom Mow Mow" was done recently...I'd love to hear that!  I never got to hear Christian do "Feel Flows"...I'd really enjoy that too!

We should give Scott his own thread here, just like Mark Linett, Jon Stebbins, Steve Desper, etc. have.

PS. I know I've had my fair share of Anti-Mike Love comments on this board, and will probably continue to do so...just ignore those rants. I may complain about how "so and so song" is never performed, but the truth is, the majority of the people who pay to see the shows are going to want to hear mostly the hits, and none of my complaining will change that. So Scott, if you ever see me complaining about you guys and your shows, just ignore my rants. My opinions on the matter are very inconsequential...

ascrodin, I'll be watching you from now on!  But seriously, feel free to post your thoughts pro or con, that's what the board is all about right?  I will say that you are right about what the majority of people want to hear.  Too often people head for the bathroom during "Betsy", but I try not to take it personally.

Excellent news on This Whole World Such a great ypbeat song, I think it would be perfect for your sound. Maybe a Christmas show in New England..which I always enjoy!!   Don't take Betsy too personally...great song. Also would love Caroline No by you at some point. Keep up the great work!

"She was born in '32, and was she ever pretty. She took a freight train west, all the way from Detroit city...Betsy was a lady and that she will remain...She may be rusted iron, but to me she's solid gold...'cause Betsy's growing oooooold!" I love that song!

My ideal Beach Boys setlist would probably send the casual fans heading for the hills. When most people think of the Beach Boys, they think "Surfin' USA" or "Fun Fun Fun' or "I Get Around" rather than "Feel Flows", "Surf's Up", or "A Day In The Life of a Tree".

"Bull Session".  ;D

Would be cool if the boys would do every album once on a special tour. I am dreaming.  ;)

My reqests are:
Somewhere Near Japan
Goin' On and
Keepin' The Summer Alive.

Why do Bruce and Dennis solo stuff? They had enough good Beach Boys songs like Tears In The Morning, All I Want To Do and Slip On Through. But it would be really nice to see some 70ies stuff too.

Anyway, welcome Scott! Love your guitar playing, really cool.  :hat  Hope you are coming to Austria soon and bring back Getcha Back, Good Timin' and Still Cruisin' into the list.

it'd be interesting to hear Be here in the Morning (one for Murry's bass vocals!) and the other...that effect that's on Brian's voice (through the amp or something)

Title: Re: \

Al sings lead on Be Here in the Morning, not Brian. Though I guess someone like Randell Kirsch would be singing it live.

Hey Scott -- any chance of working up "Pacific Ocean Blues"?  Great way of acknowledging Dennis without straying too far from the general Beach Boys topics -- plus, Mike's environmental lyrics are still pretty sharp even now.  And of course it's funky as all hell...

Sorry, I'm not overly familiar with the current Beach Boys Band setlists, so you might incorporate some of these already:

- Add Some Music to Your Day
- All I Wanna Do
- Wild Honey
- Aren't You Glad
- Friends
- Busy Doin' Nothin'
- Break Away

Hey Scott, here's one that might be a bit interesting for you, and not too far from the sound the audience would expect...

Years ago, a band I was in tried to work up a medley of "Don't Hurt My Little Sister" and "Good To My Baby" -- as a face-off between two lead singers.  The first guy telling the other to watch his step, and the second answering back that he does treat her right, no matter what people say.  Doing a verse and chorus from each song, alternating again, then a solo, and combining the two choruses as a coda.

In our case we didn't have the harmony chops to pull it off, but we always figured it could have worked.  And it could be fun onstage...

Cheers,
Jon Blum
