My vague understanding of Leaf's origin in the Beach Boys/Brian story was being a big fan in the 70's and eventually writing THE BEACH BOYS AND THE CALIFORNIA MYTH (which proved to be a very fitting title, given some of the ideas it seemed to spawn).  But how did Leaf make his way into the inner circle?  Was it just as simple as him meeting Brian while researching the book, and Brian taking a liking to him?

David explains in the chapter "Retrospective" of the 2nd, revised edition of his book, 1985:

"The book opened the door that allowed me to become part of Brian's extended support group, and Brian & I became friends. Once he saw that I wasn't out to "get" him in print, our encounters turned from awkward conversation to rewarding meetings... in 1979 he seemed to be saying "I know what you've done, and I appreciate it, and the only way I can show it is by letting you get to know me"

David was turned into a huge fan by the 1971 Tom Nolan articles in Rolling Stone - still essential reading.

and from knowing david almost 30 yrs, from trading, phone calls, many letters, meeting in person, favors in print and in articles sent back and forth i think david is a great guy. always been nice and kind to me. and he can tell great stories not in the books.  :)

Where did Leaf stand in Brian's life between 1983 and 1992, the Landy years?

Remember his Pet Sounds Mag? Unfortunately only 4 vols. came out, great stuff, though.

He was tolerated by Landy (barely) because Brian trusted him, but I can't imagine they were easy or fun times for David.
