Title: QUOTING Post by: Aegir on August 21, 2008, 10:41:46 AM It astounds me how many people write within the quote box when they're quoting others. I just picked a random post.
I've heard a recording of that show, it was excellent. Brian in top form. Now, say I wanted to respond to that in a post. Quoting it would lead me to a form that looks like this: Code:
If I were to say "I've heard it, it's not that special," I would write it after the
. This is very important! Anything before the
will be WITHIN the quote box. Here's how not to do it: Code:
That would end up like this: I've heard a recording of that show, it was excellent. Brian in top form. I've heard it. It's not that special. That's not what we want. The following, on the other hand, is the proper way to respond. Code:
Which would give us: ---- I've heard a recording of that show, it was excellent. Brian in top form. I've heard it. It's not that special. ---- You see? Isn't that easy? Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: The Heartical Don on August 22, 2008, 09:39:43 AM It's just a matter of making sure that you start writing after the very last
sign, that's all. Or alternatively, to make sure you scroll completely down at the right side before starting your comment. Things can't go wrong then.
Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: The Heartical Don on August 22, 2008, 09:40:51 AM :thud I want to get drunk! Now c'mon dear Aegir, isn't that overreacting? Just read my instructive comment just above, old boy. Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: the captain on August 23, 2008, 11:52:12 AM I'm actually a little confused as to how anyone messes up the use of quotes, to be honest. It isn't rocket science. A solid 95% of my posts are made when I'm drunk, and I can manage.

But the post, all manufactured typos aside, doesn't prove it.

But the post, all manufactured typos aside, doesn't prove it. ;D thanks for taking it in the spirit in that it was done! Your original post happens to be spot on, by the way. Perhaps it's that this board allows for quite a lot of hierarchy in quoting... other boards prohibit quoting more than 2 embedded texts. I hope the admins let it stay the way it is here. Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: the captain on August 24, 2008, 10:40:23 AM ;D You're the greatest. I agree.Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: The Heartical Don on August 25, 2008, 02:53:21 AM ;D ;D ;D superb... Title: Re: QUOTING Post by: the captain on July 02, 2009, 08:04:51 PM Seriously. Quoting. It remains inexplicably problematic.
