Title: whiskey a go go Post by: michael on February 06, 2006, 01:09:50 PM I was just listening to this live disc.Horrible acoustics but very historical,question who is singing lead on John Barleycorn and who is playng the flute?And the first few cuts by the Flame,were any of the Beach Boys playing back up?

The Beach Boys played a four show run at the Whisky-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles in August 1970, I believe it was. Carl had just discovered The Flame and produced their first album for Brother Records. He asked The Flame to open and close for the band and these were the shows for which The Flame opened. The Flame songs on this tape are as follows - Beginning Set I'm So Happy See The Light Gimme Shelter Ending Set Johnny B. That must have been a neat way to see the Beach Boys. It's such a classic venue. Only driven by, never been in. He also played flute live with the Boys ("Caroline, No" and the intro to "Sloop John B." Also a nice little improved (as in "improvational", not "improved") version of "Heart and Soul"). As well as pedal steel ("Calfornia Saga", "Marcella", and "We Got Love" after Blondie's departure). FYI, just saw Ricky (on drums) with Bonnie Raitt a couple months ago. Great band, great drummer. FYI, Charles Lloyd played the Boston Commons with the Boys in Aug. '72...only he played maracas, having not brought his flute or sax with him. And finally: the last song they played was a rewritten version of “John Barleycorn Must Die”. As the lyrics tell about the Flame’s arrival in America, I tend to call it “The Ballad Of The Flames”.
