Title: If you could bring a dead rock star back to life
Post by: Spiritinthesky on August 13, 2008, 09:57:57 AM
If you could bring a dead rock star back to life for one gig, who would it be?

John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Kurt Cobain, Buddy Holly, Freddie Mercury? Or someone else?

This Day in Music are carrying out a world-wide survey to see which dead rock stars people would want to see again - for one night only!

Who would you pick? You can see a full list and vote on

For a gig would be my least favorite reason to do it, considering I don't much like going to shows. Thelonious Monk, probably, although he isn't a rock star (but a jazz composer and pianist, for the non-jazz audience out there). But if I could bring one back for, say, a conversation or a studio session, it would be Freddie Mercury or John Lennon, probably.

Cheap answer - Carl Wilson.

Gotta go with the King.  I would like to go with John Lennon, but then again that would be ignoring the King.

If we're talking a live show, I'd go for Jimi Hendrix. My old man saw him in 1969, and if Hendrix was alive to play one gig today, and I was lucky enough to go to it, I would take acid for the show.

Elvis... but wait, he isn't dead, is he?  :-D

I would love to see a Carl Perkins concert, too and Hank Williams

My first instinct would be Lennon but since we're talking a live gig, I'll go with Freddie.

True, one of the greatest. The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color and Bright Moments (Live) are my favorite albums.

Johann Sebastian Bach (I'd want to hear him play 'The Goldberg Variations' and 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' on his harpsichord, see what he originally intended).

PS: there are a few tiny BBs connections. 'Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring' is the template for 'Lady Lynda', and he's namechecked on 'Mt. Vernon And Fairway'.

Yeah, but doesn't Bach playing on the transistor radio make the young prince want to throw it out the window or something?

Without out a doubt it would have to be Buddy Holly. He was a Brian Wilson prototype and I would give my left arm to step into some alt-universe where he didn't die in that plane crash to listen to what gorgeous music he would have created.

Number 2 would be Kurt. Imagine Nirvana if they moved Dave Grohl to Rhythm Guitar, brought in a new drummer, and fanned out the music writing responsibilities between Grohl and Cobain. It would have been a partnership to rival Lennon and McCartney IMO.

I think it was a sort of Chuck Berry/"Roll Over Beethoven" kind of sarcasm, on Brian's part. When you are raised on rock 'n' roll and jazz, it's almost too easy to make fun of classical music. I'm sure Brian and his prince meant nothing by it, other than the youthful need for something more "exciting."

Thanks for explaining; but I wasn't serious of course.

Let me propose another artist here: what about: G.G.Allin?

If GG Allin was brought back to life for one gig, he would die in the middle of the gig.

Hehe - you are perfectly right. He had a death wish for sure. I always wondered about the mental condition of the people who stood in the first rows at his concerts... I bet they suffered from various forms of paraphilia.

Dennis and Carl.  But not for just one night, but for a long time.

Keith Moon.

Lennon and Harrison so we could have that reunion.
Chet Atkins so he could teach me to finger pick CORRECTLY.
Mama Cass.    Just so I could hear her sing again.
Jerry Garcia.   The world needs the Grateful Dead right now.
Charlie and Miles.
Dusty Springfield.   She left just before she got the recognition she so richly deserved.
Bobby Hatfield.  Rock and Roll heaven would have wait.

I would most like to hear what John Coltrane and Jimi Hendrix would have done if they could have continued their careers.
I suspect Coltrane would have gone electric for a while.  I'm guessing Hendrix would have played some jazz with Miles Davis then made a pop album when he needed to replenish his bank account.

It would be really nice - if you could bring him back cured of his depression otherwise he would likely be pissed off to be back.

'I Want To Hold Your Hand' in E minor?  But would it sell?

I like that idea of Grohl and Cobain Mikee.

That could have made quite a splash!

What about Mary Hansen from Stereolab? Her BG vocals were a huge part of their sound.

Lucky! I saw them in 2006 and that was great as well. Loud gig, but expected. I think I was the only one of 5 people dancing the whole time. It was a lot of fun!

So who sings Mary Hansen's parts now? One of the guys in the band? Or does Laetitia Sadier have superpowers which allow her to sing two vocal parts at once? :lol

Now it's a guy and to me that sucks. At least back in 06 there was a trombone covering her part.

OK, I'll get my coat then...

I would only bring them back to life if they weren't really resurrected, but were more like zombies with hunks of dead flesh and goop and a sobering air of putrescence.

Hehe, I see your point. Then you could be the puppet master in the studio. Make them do what you want to. And then send them back into the grave...

Dennis Wilson
Of course Carl too...but Denny was, I think, a different shade of Brian.  Watching Brian's TLOS dvd -- I was imagining how great it would have been to see Denny doing POB live with his own band -- to support the reRelease.  Or sh-t...doing something entirely new.  How many incredible albums did we never get?  Damn.  Now I'm angry.   >:(

Syd Barrett
Obviously Syd was useless after the early 70s...so bringing him back would involve a little more "voodoo dust" to return him to his full madman glory.  Otherwise he'd just be raised from the dead...then just tell us to F-off.   :lol  But he was the most original creative mind to ever make music I think.  What we have of him is frustrating.  It'd be like just having "Let Him Run Wild" a few songs off Today! and maybe a Paley session.  A frustrating tease.  You're almost better off not getting into him!
