Title: 1983 Smile Cobble/Boot
Post by: KokoMoses on August 02, 2008, 08:37:50 AM
Ok, I've never been a huge Smile fan until yesterday.

I found this 1983 cobble-together using original Smile tapes and Smiley Smile 20/20 tracks, and it holds together mightily. If only as a blueprint for what might have been (sorry Brian: regarding your finished version)

Side 2 especially would have been a killer.

I know I'm way behind the bus on this......... but I'm pissed Smile never came out as planned.

I woulda blew some fucking minds!

That's assuming there was ever an "as planned." Which, by the way, I don't believe to be the case, or it likely would have happened. More likely is that there was never a plan, simply general plans, plenty of options, and as enthusiasm waned, it stopped. To think a 1983 boot would be any closer to some original grand scheme than a 2004 release (or anything else) is probably an error.

It's well documented that Brian was constantly changing the lineup during the SMiLE sessions.  He arranged each song so that they could be placed in any order on the album.  Songs were worked on that eventually were abandoned, and some songs were added along the way.  SMiLE grew and evolved as time went on, but sadly, the plug got pulled.
