Post by: Peadar 'Big Dinner' O'Driscoll on July 28, 2008, 03:55:45 PM
Dennis used the bass harmonica lots as did Brian on occasions so im just wondering can anyone think of many current bands that use it. I cant say ive heard it much but then i dont always really listen out for these things

The only other occasion I can think of is the theme song to "Sanford and Son", a GREAT American TV show from the 1970s.  Here it is:

It was a great show, but derived from Steptoe and Son across the pond.

I think the bass harmonica was a very '70s thing in pop music (well, unless you count stuff from before the rock'n'roll era, such as Jerry Murad's Harmonicats and Borrah Minevitch's Harmonica Rascals) -- which is one reason I think a lot of POB sounds dated -- so I doubt you'll hear it in modern music that much. Yeah, I know, it was in a Grammy-nominated album from 2004, but let's not forget that the producer of that album would include a vat of corn starch in the recording if he could turn it into a musical instrument!
