Title: Photo of Brian holding record in pool
Post by: variable2 on July 07, 2008, 09:43:26 AM
Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows what publication the photo at 3:34 in this youtube video is from
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfZFuslGLSU&feature=related

also, does anyone have a decent quality copy of it on their computer?

It seems a sort of darkly comical picture.. clearly he's in depths of his mid-70s depression, and he's holding up what is probably an Endless Summer greatest hits gold record, like he's supposed to feel proud.

Keith Badman's dairy about the band has a black and white shot of it (pg. 335)

I first spotted that picture in Andrew G. Doe's book, but it found its way into several others as well (can't recall which ones, as part of my BB collection is at my parents' place). He looks very pale in that picture and probably should have cut his fingernails. (Wait a second, am I writing about Brian Wilson's fingernails?)

I read somewhere (Gold book, Gaines book, or some other book) that Brian posed submerged in the pool because he didn't want people to see how fat he'd gotten.  They only took the picture because he didn't show up for the band receiving the gold record, but they wanted a shot of him holding the gold record.  There, how's that for remembered Brian Wilson trivia?

I remember something about that too, but I don't recall where I read it. I think the picture is from the later part of 1974.

It's in the gatefold of the vinyl 15 Big Ones, too.

Hi Everyone,

First post for me after lurking for some time. Recently I was lucky enough to get a copy of "Sounds", September 1975, which features this very picture. I tried uploading a 120 kb scan of it but received the following message: "The upload folder is full. Please try a smaller file and/or contact an administrator." A smaller file begins to lose quality, defeating the purpose somewhat.

If anyone can help, I'd be most grateful.

Cheers.

Hey and welcome... not sure if I'm the best person to help you out, but you could always upload the picture to an image host like imageshack etc.. or even sendspace and then people could just download it from there?

Endless Summer was certified gold in the US August 14th 1974, so the photo dates from late summer/early fall.

I've heard it said that as soon as this shot was taken, Brian got out of the pool, walked to the nearest wall and smashed the disc against it.

Maybe it's just the light!

There is also that picture from the SMiLE era where Brian is standing up while playing the piano (from memory) and his beard is red

LOL!  :lol

Just in case someone actually believes this, I'm wondering how they were able to piece the disc together again after that, because it looked quite undamaged hanging on the wall of Brian's office in one of the Dr. Landy era TV reports.
Yeah, the best stories....but a good laugh anyway.

Simple - you just ask Capitol to make a new one. I hate to shatter people's perceptions about gold discs, but the BB ones I saw at the Tower years ago weren't actually BB LPs: the number of bands was wrong.

Peter Tork tells a funny story about cracking open one of his Monkees' gold record awards and discovering that the actualy record was a gospel trio!

I'm really not surprised.

I kinda am. I looked back at some songs that Brian was recording around that time, and I came up with "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Shortenin' Bread", "Good Timin", "Child Of Winter", "California Feeling", and he sang on Johnny Rivers' "Help Me Rhonda". Just a little surprised that Brian would be upset by those great, classic Beach Boys' songs, when he was recording some. Did Brian get royalties for Endless Summer?

It's nice to see that Brian has come to terms with what those songs represented, because, for some time now, he's been performing songs like "Catch A Wave", "Dance Dance Dance", "Drive In", "Barbara Ann", "Surfin' USA", and "Fun Fun Fun" in concert.

Perhaps money (or the lack of) had nothing to do with it. I don;t think he wanted anythng to do with the BB at that time. Destroying a gold record is the same as destroying his voice - it's meant to demolish something from your past that you have grown to despise.

Yes, probably the only time in the 60's & 70's when he talked about the BB as 'they' and not 'we' in interviews. If he had known at that point what he would be doing one year later...

Simple - you just ask Capitol to make a new one. I hate to shatter people's perceptions about gold discs, but the BB ones I saw at the Tower years ago weren't actually BB LPs: the number of bands was wrong.

Ok. To imagine Brian smashing his Endless Summer Gold disc is just too funny! :-D

I guess the famous pic of Brian sitting on the diving board (with clothes, sorry girls) is from the same photo shoot?

No, 'course not - he only wrote them, arranged them, produced them, played and sang on them. Why should he get royalties ?

I'm sorry if this makes me look my usual sarcastic self, but that is the single most inane question I've ever seen on any BB/BW MB in my ten years online. Just where do you think Brian's money comes from these days ?  His tours ? The merchandising ? The sales of his last few albums ?

He sounded cool with Endless Summer in the September 1974  Jim Pewer interview. Of course after the Caribou sessions he took an even sharper downturn destroying his voice gaining another 50 pounds etc. THere is another picutre of Brian with the disc in the pool, he looks happier. It's in the 1975 tour book.

Not crazy at all. The first tour just about broke even due to the merchandising. The Pet Sounds tour of 2000 lost something in the region of $500,000 and all subsequent US tours (one excepted - guess*) have lost money. Granted Brian hasn't lost money on the foreign tours, but the promoters have. As for records, BWPS has yet to sell half a million in the US... GIOMH charted for one week in the US at #100 and the Xmas album lasted one week at #200. Did Pet Sounds Live chart in the US ? Nope. If Brian had to rely exclusively on his post 1995 releases and his touring for income, he'd be about as well off as me. The gold is in the catalog.

Was the Pet Sounds tour the big loser money wise, or has a subsequent tour lost more? Brian really needs to get a new financialpantherplanner.

I'm actually surprised GIOMH even charted that high.

I know this isn't exactly possible, but if Brian wanted a jolt to his solo career he should do another tour as support, as he did with Paul Simon. I'm pretty sure that tour made good money, can someone confirm that?

That was the exception.  ;D

Anyone remember back when, when that tour was announced, that Brian's people took a very dim view of anyone who said Brian was opening for, or supporting, Paul ?

I've suspected that at least part of the reason Brian tours every year is to compete with Mike's Beach Boys.  Just for the bragging rights.   He's actually had some pretty high ticket prices and has played some larger venues at times (Hollywood Bowl, Berkeley's Greek Theater).  It hasn't been entirely successful, but they keep trying.

The other issue here is that most folks who make albums, even well-received ones, don't make much money. It's one of the reason so few artists are shedding tears over the slow death of major record labels. One of the best essays on the subject:

http://www.negativland.com/albini.html

So touring is pretty much where folks make their bucks. And if Brian doesn't make bucks touring, he sure isn't making it from recent work,

If you're a songwriter, the really big bucks is in the publishing: if Brian still owned his own catalog 1962-69, he'd seriously rich as opposed to just comfortably so.

What kinda world do we live in where a man can't undo what his abusive father did,

I'm starting to think Prince was right!  ;D

This one?

I have that one as a cover shot for a SMiLE bleg, on the Chapter One label. In fact, this CD is simply a copy 'taken' from the first Japanese 'true' SMiLE bleg from 1989, you know, the one that for the very first time released the long sessions of Good Vibrations and Heroes And Villains to the world. Oh, those were the high points in my collector's life... at a fair I could grab both the 1985 SMiLE LP on Brother and that Japanese CD. Needless to say I 'shuffled' back to the train home, constantly eyeing that plastic bag lest one ignorant idiot would steal it from under my nose, inspecting the contents, seeing 'nothing of interest' in there (no money or drugs, that is) and throwing it in the river... the horror... the horror... :(
