Title: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Ana-Lu on June 20, 2008, 05:25:52 PM AP (Los Angeles): As an homage to Beach Boys "twofer" reissues from the 1970s, Capitol records will issue a limited edition, 2 LP vinyl version of Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue" and "Bambu," featuring 70s cover graphics, poor vinyl pressings, and two songs deleted from each LP, sources report.
"We strongly feel that Dennis, as an artist of uncompromising vision and integrity, is fully deserving of the same shoddy treatment that the Beach Boys, Sinatra and others received in the 70s," said Capitol Vice President Creed Vander Mark. "Therefore, we have pressed these LPs on substandard vinyl and hacked two songs off of each album." Vander Mark is particularly proud of the sleeve design. "The double album cover features a purple border, 70s Euro-style graphics, and random, inappropriate photos of Dennis - many of which depict him from a completely different era." "We are really excited about the vinyl we used," he continued. "We had to break into a locked file cabinet to find the exact formula that was used for LPs during the energy crisis of the 70s. We even made sure to melt down defective LPs that had been shipped back and added them to the new vinyl compound, with chunks of the labels ground up along with the melted vinyl." Capitol executives had a difficult time reaching consensus on a record label design, however. "One contingent was really gung-ho for the yellow label with "Capitol" in orange typeface. Eventually, we went with the red/orange label, with olive typeface, the same one used on 'Endless Summer.'" As an incentive for vinyl buyers, the double album will be priced at only $9.99. "Two for the price of one. That was the only way we could unload this ancient crap during the 70s," Vander Mark said. Plans are underway to issue the abridged version of "Pacific Ocean Blue" and "Bambu" on 8-track, according to an internal Capitol memo. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: roll plymouth rock on June 20, 2008, 11:12:56 PM I take it you're not impressed with the vinyl re-release?
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 21, 2008, 06:41:24 AM While I think it was more of a poke at Capitol, I as the biggest vinyl fan there is would not be half as excited about this release if it were not on this format. I could debate quite long windily about the subject but don't care to beyond saying that vinyl is a direct reproduction of sound as opposed to a high end digital reproduction. Many including myself hear a big difference, perhaps accounting for CD sales dropping and vinyl sales increasing. Check out acousticsounds.com and notice that it is now vinyl that is the audiophile product.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: roll plymouth rock on June 21, 2008, 10:20:56 AM I love vinyl too, and like you probably do, already have POB and Bambu on vinyl. So this release is getting me really excited to hear the non-POB tracks all cleaned up and in analog. I wonder when the first copies will arrive?
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Aegir on June 21, 2008, 11:39:57 AM Wait, I still don't get it... I know it's coming out on vinyl, but that's just a joke, right? ???
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: shelter on June 21, 2008, 12:36:12 PM Wait, I still don't get it... I know it's coming out on vinyl, but that's just a joke, right? ??? The vinyl won't be out on Capitol but on Sundazed and it will be 3 instead of 2 LP's, so of course it's a joke. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Ana-Lu on June 21, 2008, 01:35:35 PM There's a difference between "expanded" and "abridged." I received my promo copy of the Capitol, and they got it exactly right. Just like holding the Fun Fun Fun/Dance Dance Dance twofer in my hands. And because it's abridged, we're not stuck listening to extra music we don't need to hear.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 21, 2008, 01:56:11 PM I think it will arrive next week.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Jon Stebbins on June 21, 2008, 04:11:10 PM Odd joke...since Capitol has ZERO to do with the POB/Bambu release it is a stretch. But anyway...I did get to hold in my hands an advance copy of the Sundazed three LP Blue vinyl POB/Bambu set and it is absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! Truly beautiful...and heavy. I suggest everyone order one, find one, get one...they are so damn cool.

I suggest everyone order one, find one, get one...they are so damn cool. This might be a dumb question, but how does the POB re-release vinyl sound compared to original POB vinyl? And does the vinyl POB/Bambu sound the same as the CD? I might be repeating myself somewhere...it's late haha Thanks! :) Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 22, 2008, 10:21:08 PM It should be out in a few days. To my ears the 1977 LP sounds very good, I think the mastering problem was mainly on the CBS release in 1991 that was very limited vinyl and cd. If I had known how limited it was I would have bought that version too.

Post by: DonnyL on June 23, 2008, 11:38:45 AM I didn't think the 91 reissue came out on vinyl, did it? I had the cassette ...
i received the new vinyl on saturday (via Sundazed directly) and it is truly outstanding, the benchmark of how a reissue should be treated. sounds incredible, 3 discs of awesome blue vinyl Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 23, 2008, 10:09:04 PM The 1991 did I saw one. I didn't buy it because I had the original. I didn't know the mixes were different etc. All the CBS 1991 issues were on vinyl. All had a generic back cover with songs listed. I have a scan of the Sunflower one and the Flames website shows the Holland one. These are so rare I have none of them in my collection. Man I wish I had the MIU with alternate takes. The Holland with Mt Vernon on the LP must be cool too.

Its 1991 all over again ::) Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 24, 2008, 02:01:12 AM Obviously not true as you can order it from the Sundazed site itself and many others.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: alanjames on June 24, 2008, 07:08:29 AM Yeah, I ordered it from Amazon, but they say that's out of print, and Amazon don't shipped the vinyl to me.
So I bought a copy at Sundazed's site. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: SloopJohnB on June 24, 2008, 08:24:10 AM A certain number of copies were probably allotted to Amazon and they must simply have run out of them. I hope they'll send me the one I had preordered though - they are supposed to ship it today.

Post by: Custom Machine on June 26, 2008, 02:42:54 PM My vinyl copy of POB arrived from Sundazed today. A great looking package! Unfortunately, Disc one is warped to the extent that it won't play. I called Sundazed and they said that the entire first run of POB on vinyl is sold out, so they are doing a second run. I'm sure Amazon and others will have it back in stock when it becomes available again.

Mine is supposed to arrive next week...can't wait. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on June 27, 2008, 04:13:23 PM Mine should be here tomorrow or Monday I am very excited.

I'm sure Amazon and others will have it back in stock when it becomes available again. I actually broke my original POB vinyl disc because it was warped (I DID find it for $5.99 however... This was in 1992) and I was a complete idiot and tried to warp it back into place over my stove. It actually worked but then it fell and I actually stepped on it while bending down to pick it up and busted it in half!!!!!! I haven't forgiven myself since! THEN about 5 years ago, a friend burned me a CD from the 91 issue and I STEPPED ON THAT and broke it in half while cleaning out my car! My Sundazed vinyl copy will be kept in a safe! Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on July 01, 2008, 02:10:32 AM Dennis must be playing tricks on you.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Leo K on July 01, 2008, 09:38:26 AM The vinyl set is an incredible listening experience. I have yet to do an A/B comparison with the CD, but it appears the exquisite sound is wider in dynamic range, and the sound picture is deeper overall...I was stunned, and listened almost through the whole 3 LP set in one sitting. The warmth and clarity of the sound is absolutely stunning. The dark tones are deep and resonant, rounded and full. The highs are clear, but welcoming to the ear, no sound of stress or fatigue on the ear. After listening I felt as if my ear had just soaked in a warm nourishing bath. It's a grand experience in every way...an epic journey.
And the packaging is grand in every way, with much care in the design and the extra 2 page photo spread booklet (with POP lyrics on the back page) is a nice touch. Dennis's thank note is on a separate card. The liner notes are all there as well (except for the David Leaf or expanded notes seen in the CD set PDF). The vinyl is a deep blue...just beautiful. I just ordered another "safety" copy! Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on July 02, 2008, 02:55:50 AM It is great on vinyl. Faithful to the original mix but cleaner. You and I is especally more clear. Never liked the song that much until I heard it this way. Anyways it's a dream come true for a vinyl fan like myself.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: shelter on July 04, 2008, 01:47:25 PM Dennis's thank note is on a separate card. The thank you note is a very simple but really wonderful addition. Great idea to include it that way. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: 49ersphil on July 04, 2008, 04:37:14 PM Have ordered (but not yet received) it from HMV in UK.
Was intending to just listen to CD version and keep the vinyl unopened for posterity. Now looks like I'll have to get another one to hear what I'm missing and add it to my CD's of the 77 LP done as a vinyl transfer, CiscoDisc bootleg and promo DVD-A of POB in 5:1 Stereo. ::) Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Peadar 'Big Dinner' O'Driscoll on July 08, 2008, 02:29:37 AM Got this, beautiful package, lots of stuff packed in. The song "Time" is scratched for me but maybe i just need a better vinyl player. Its a pity the taylor hawkins Holy man is not on it, guess they ran out of space.
Fantastic to have this, was beginning to think id never see the day ;D Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: MBE on July 08, 2008, 03:17:34 AM Holy Man is on my copy on the second LP.
Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: shelter on July 08, 2008, 04:09:03 AM Holy Man is on my copy on the second LP. I presume it's on all copies...? On CD it comes after Bambu, on vinyl it comes after the four POB bonus tracks. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! I'm just wondering from those that own it, what the pressing and packaging is like, and if it's worth spashing out the dough. Many thanks in advance. Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl! Post by: Alan Smith on January 18, 2012, 04:10:29 AM I'm thinking of getting the Sony Legacy 3 LP set, but it's reasonably pricey - £30 upwards. I'm just wondering from those that own it, what the pressing and packaging is like, and if it's worth spashing out the dough. Many thanks in advance. It's fantastic in all respects, definitely grab it. I have a original Australian pressing and the differences are: colour corrected cover art, great layout, and good incorporation of the liner notes as per the CD. Good reprod of Dennis's thank you and feedback invitation. The Vinyl is well pressed and shows off the remaster nicely (which will be influenced by the quality of your stereo of course), where as my original vinyl is kinda flimsy - can't compare the sound as the new is remastered (although I get equally fat bass reproduction from the original (not that I play it that much)). Blue vinyl is a bit gimicky, whatever, and they oversaturated the Caribou label, again, no big deal. I took advantage of an economic downturn in a large Western nation and got mine for about $40 (Australian) which is about 29 quid - in Oz store prices are around 48 PSD, so I think the current price is fair. Not sure how it will pan out as a collectible/investment - but if you like vinyl and love this album, just do it!!! Title: Re: POB Bambu on Vinyl!
