According to an early 1980's article in NME, JEFF BRIDGES was in talks to play Brian Wilson in a planned Beach Boys movie... obviously, it never happened; however, Jeff Bridges will b  in a movie called SURF'S UP!

While we're at it, wouldn't it be nice if they made a BEACH BOY movie directed by someone like Oliver Stone (he'd be perfect, especially for Brian Wilson's POV scenes). They could base it on Brian Wilson's autobiography "Wouldn't It Be Nice."

Martin Scorsese would also be great for a project like this. I think it's CRAZY that bands like The Beatles and ESPECIALLY The Beach Boys never got a "great" movie. Afterall, both of their stories are amazing!

Hm, Oliver Stone makes sh*t up in his movies and the book "Wouldn't It Be Nice" is made up sh*t. I like the synergy.

Then it should be the Mike Love Story! Oliver and Mike are prime-time historical revisionists. And David Leaf can write the narration.

I brought my girlfriend home from a screening of "Grace Of My Heart" ( at the theatre right over the Virgin Megastore at Sunset & Laurel) and showed her Marilyn on the cover of a Honeys CD and she said "Holy Smokes!", or some such expletive.  It's an uncanny resemblance.  Plus, she's just a great actress.

I never noticed the resemblance, now I know why I have such a crush on Marilyn as well.

Jeff Bridges would make a pretty good Brian.  Just imagine THE DUDE with a work ethic.... 40 years ago.

A shoddy ghostwritten mess, cobbled from interviews with many people, bizarre attacks by Landy on the Beach Boys and family members, and mistruths from other books, all made to read as Brian's "voice". Sickening.

I thought Platoon was pretty good...  If only for Charlie Sheens fine performance (not a big fan of his, but I really connected with the character...)  Willem Dafoe was good too...  Whole lotta pathos when he died.

Onto the topic,  I've never gotten the whole "Bridges looks like Brian" thing...  I don't see much resemblance.  Who would play young Brian?  Hayley Joel Osment? ;)

Ian, if I can give you an advise, WATCH THAT MOVIE!!! I´m not to keen on the Coen-brothers either, but "The Big Lebowski" IS one of the best movies of the 90s, you really can´t go wrong. John Goodman alone is worth the price of admission.

Interesting. I'm about 90% done with the book and thought it was interesting, deep and very dark. Sometimes, even hard to read.

What other BB book can you recommend that tells the most turthful story. Other than this autobio, I've only read Leaf's.

You said the book of subject is a shoddy ghostwritten mess, etc. etc...  what was the biggest example of a "mistruth" that keeps on lingering on all the anti-beach boy/pro-brian books/articles?

(certainly not the movie, An American Family, right?)

Back in 1988, William Hurt's name was being bandied about (by Landy, I think) as the actor to play Brian in a movie.

Of course, given the choice I'd have Jeff Bridges.

All these guys are way too old to play Brian at this point, assuming that the pic would start at the beginning of the Beach Boys saga.  Did you see Bill Hurt in "A History of Violence"?  ;)

That being said, Beau Bridges would have made for a pretty good Carl if his brother had landed the Brian role in the 80s.

Great movie.

They make that sort of life he leads look glamorous compared to how it will be when I live it.

I think it would be funny if they got Luke, Owen, and Andrew Wilson to play the Wilson brothers.

The guy who plays Roy on the American version of "The Office" would be great as Carl Wilson.

I don't ever want to see another Beach Boys movie. Their story is too complex and too long to fit into a movie. And it always comes out looking fake.

Although the last couple of BB/BW documentaries have been pretty good, I'm still waiting for the definitive BB/BW documentary to be made.  Much like the Dylan one.

I'd also love to see a well done Doors/Jim Morrison documentary. And one on Syd Barrett...

I'd be happy with a Charles Manson movie that has a scene or two with the Beach Boys in it.

I hate to say this, but we won't get a decent BB movie til they're all dead...  However, I really do believe a GREAT movie can be made about them. The history (teens to early BB) can go quick with fast cuts and narration to get the big picture (kind of like the young Henry Hill section in GOODFELLAS). Then, it can cut to California Girls then Pet Sounds, and so on.... maybe up until 1983 when Denny passes away and Brian is back again.

With the right director and the right script, anything is possible.
