Title: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: joe_blow on June 18, 2008, 01:58:26 AM With All the Internet charting of POB, how will it do it in the Billboard Top 200?
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Susan on June 18, 2008, 03:12:17 AM Conservatively i've voted Top 100. I believe that it deserves to be higher, and i hope it gets there, but in this fickle market geared entirely towards teens [what is WITH these record companies, anyway?!], it may well not.

Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: shelter on June 18, 2008, 05:18:22 AM It seems to be getting quite some media coverage, so it should be able to make the top 100... I would be surprised though if it'd go any higher than, say, #80...
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: c-man on June 18, 2008, 06:48:52 AM I wonder if it will be stuck on their "Catalog" chart, instead of the Top 200, since it's basically a reissue...I mean, I HOPE not...
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: elnombre on June 18, 2008, 07:38:40 AM I say #95 on the top 200.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: XY on June 18, 2008, 07:52:25 AM #58 in the US
#33 in the UK Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? I was looking at the criteria for appearing on the catalog chart as compared to the main chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Pop_Catalog_Albums It certainly looks like POB is destined for the catalog chart. Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Shady on June 18, 2008, 09:22:24 AM It's out of stock at the moment on amazon.com..
They better get more in soon. Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: pixletwin on June 18, 2008, 09:39:36 AM I had to call every record store in the valley yesterday to find POB. Only one had a copy still left. They flew off the shelves here. I think I must have bought the last copy in Salt Lake.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: elnombre on June 18, 2008, 10:32:14 AM #58 in the US #33 in the UK I've got to say, I'll be absolutely gobsmacked if it does that well in the UK. EDIT: Colour me gobsmacked - it looks like its done even better than that. Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: CarCrazyCutie on June 18, 2008, 11:41:30 AM Probably a long shot but Top 10, hopefully ;D
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Andrew G. Doe on June 18, 2008, 11:45:34 AM Would be so cool if it charted as a reissue higher than it originally did. ;D
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: adamghost on June 18, 2008, 12:29:56 PM I've been wondering this myself.
I can tell you a little bit through my recent experience with DAYLIGHT KISSING NIGHT charting on amazon. I'd be surprised if it charted as a catalog because of all the new material on the disc. I would think it would be the regular chart. The bottom rung for the Billboard Top 200 is scanning roughly 5,000 units the first week. I've been told that includes all the pre-orders, though I haven't been able to confirm that. I would hazard a guess that the Amazon sales are probably between 1,000 and 2,000 units. It could be a lot higher but not much lower. I think it's likely to make the Billboard top 200. I'm hoping it will chart well up there but amazon ran out the first day of release, and people are reporting they're having trouble finding the CD. That means either Sony or more likely retailers underestimated the demand for the album and if they're not available they can't sell and they can't contribute to the chart position. So my gut feeling is that it might not. I think it's realistic to hope for something anywhere up to about #75 in the charts, but I'd be surprised (though very happy) if it got that high. Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: c-man on June 18, 2008, 12:41:39 PM Nonesuch (or Warners) reportedly underestimated the demand for BWPS as well. To refresh everyone's memories, it was #1 on Amazon for several days and managed to debut at #13 on Billboard here in the U.S. I'm sure it was delivered in much greater quantities than POB/Bambu. Yesterday mid-morning I went to Target and Best Buy (they were both sold out) before heading to Borders, where the girl working there had to pull it off her stock cart for me (thankfully she knew exactly what I was talking about, even though she was only about 20).
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: AKA on June 18, 2008, 04:14:18 PM Yeah, I don't think it will make the main Billboard chart, since there are rules about reissues. I know there was some controversy earlier this year when the Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition was released. Had those rules not been in place, the Thriller reissue would have been number one.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: adamghost on June 18, 2008, 06:40:46 PM It's upthread that POB is poised to make #8 in the UK chart, which would be, simply, stunning. My hopes for a higher placement in the states are raised. Andrew, you may be right, but I hope you're wrong. I'd like to see it in the main chart.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Andrew G. Doe on June 18, 2008, 11:53:50 PM Just checked and I don't quite believe it myself, but back in 1977, POB didn't chart in the UK. The album chart rundown this Sunday is going to be very interesting... ;D
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: donald on June 19, 2008, 10:36:44 AM Will it continue to sell after the initial pent up demand is satisfied?
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Steve Mayo on June 19, 2008, 12:13:06 PM just ordered my copy from amazon. it is now back in stock.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: adamghost on June 19, 2008, 08:05:53 PM I think it might keep selling, because my sense is there's a wave of publicity building behind it. Dennis has the potential to be one of those "found" hipster icons like Nick Drake. All the elements are there. It makes good copy.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on June 19, 2008, 09:44:29 PM When I went to Borders or Barnes and Noble (I don't remember) to buy it on June 17, I couldn't find it. But a guy looked it up and found it in the Country section !?! Who on earth would classify it as country? Especially here in Texas!! But in other stores I saw it in the rightful pop/rock section.
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Aegir on June 19, 2008, 11:59:48 PM People have said this many times over on the board so I'm sorry if I'm being redundant, but it could be because there's also a country artist named Dennis Wilson and "Dennis Wilson" is tagged as country in their database.

Post by: Steve Mayo on June 20, 2008, 06:25:42 AM at this moment it is #10 on amazon's chart and #4 on amazon's vinyl chart. i'm stunned but gladly so....
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: joe_blow on June 26, 2008, 09:34:33 AM # 8 on the catalogue chart....would that count top ten with an * or did not chart?
Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Jon Stebbins on June 26, 2008, 10:14:29 AM Okay... so the answer(s) to the posed question of this thread is/are in...First week sales.
Billboard top 200...not eligible because its a reissue...but sales slot it in at about #95 UK LP chart...#16 US Billboard Catalog chart...#8 US Billboard Internet sales chart...#8 Amazon ranking on release day... #4 I've got to say that I had the highest hopes for this release, but these numbers are even better than what I'd predicted. Title: Re: Will Pacific Ocean Blue chart in Billboard? Post by: Pretty Funky on June 26, 2008, 04:00:37 PM Just out of interest Jon. Who gets the royalties in this case?
Would hope its his estate, meaning his sons. Thanks |
