Is Dick Rising (Reising?) a real person?

No it's a joke.

There is a talk show host on Dallas, TX radio named Richard Hunter. They call him Big Dick Hunter!

If he was, he'd be another sad statistic from the annals of teenage suicide.

Funny, there seems to be a dude on the blueboard all the time called Richard Head who never posts. People always namecheck him.

It's a blueboard conspiracy.

Not to mention my friend Seymore Butts. He lives in a Texas town called Plainview!

I heard that Dick Reising had changed his name by deed poll to Jack Meoff

Has a brother-in-law called Warrick Hunt.

When I was a kid we lived next door to a guy named Dick Rash.  Seriously.

Didn't he have a cockney cousin in England?  Hugh Jampton?

I used to live next door to a guy named Harold A. Hole.  Old Harry didn't talk much.  Then there was a guy who played for the Green Bay Packers in the late 1970s named Mike Hunt.  It was great hearing the TV announcers try to pronounce that one without cracking up (no pun intended).  They eventually started calling him Michael Hunt during the broadcasts.

That's my understanding as well.  I'd have to dig to find my source for that though.

Yes, there actually was a European Capitol-EMI promotions man by the name of Dick Reising.  He was known for his ability to create interest in forthcoming (no pun intended) Capitol-EMI releases (no pun intended), but his promotional efforts often seemed to fall short (no pun intended) once a record had actually hit the streets and needed the necessary promotional follow through.  As a result, he was replaced by Capitol-EMI promotions man Big Dick Thrustin.

My mother once worked with a dude named Richard Byrd. She and her friends called him "Dicky Byrd".

Later Jim Morrison picked up on it continuing the put-on by referencing Dick's 2 brothers, Moe and Joe Reising in  'L.A. Woman'.

Yes - there are photos from the 50s of Capitol meetings, and he's there. Also, several mentions in Billboard in the late 50s/early 60s. Real guy, with a really unfortunate name.  ;D

Ah, beat me to it - btw, this Dick Rising is not the same one as was in the Euclid Beach Band and played on Eric Carmen solo albums.

His name spells Rich(ard) Reising.

And the diminutive of Rich(ard) is... ?

..Dick. And the surname´s spelling is Reising, not Rising.

Dick Swett was actually elected as a U.S. congressman from New Hampshire. He served in the 90s.

His wife, Katrina Swett, is now running for congress as well.

The promotional job is now held by Ms. C. Alice Viagra

I may have mentioned this earlier in the thread..........when it started a couple of years ago.

Honest varifiable fact;  Sometime in the 1960's, a guy named Peter D. Beter (pronounced beater) ran for governor of WV.  Never knew whart the D. was for.   Daniel, David, douglas, ......................anything but Peter!  On the other it could have actually been Dirk or Dick.

Why do people with such last names as Beter, Rising, Long, etc, name their children Richard or Peter?

i remember that. d was for david.

People NEVER believe that.  I was a teen and we all just howled when his political spots were played on the radio.   I wondered if his generation even got the joke.

Phone books are often a good source for really funny names. For instance in Niagara Falls, NY there were no less than 3 Harrold Dicks. I remember the name Manley Whipple which stuck in my head too...

Then in Shreveport, LA: Ben Dover and Dick Fullilove. Not making that up at all. Shouldn't they get together?

Okay, the next one isn't real as far as I know but I do have a yahoo ID of Hugh Jass.

P.S. Unfortunately Ben Dover passed away a couple of years ago. It turns out an acquaintance of mine actually knew him and said he was a really nice old man. I feel terrible for the prank call I made to him that one day many years ago...

Dick Rising was a real person, He was VP of Capital Records back in the 50 through the early 70s, he was in charge  of sales & marketing .He was a great guy that really knew the music business. I met him in 1973 & went to work for him when I was 19 yeas old. He lived in an apartment complex that was right around the corner from Capital Records, it  was in a pretty bad neighborhood so he had a special security door installed for protection. I saw him on a Friday afternoon we had lunch and finished the day . He was  murdered that weekend by to low life addicts that lived t in the complex. He was a Great guy & I will always remember him with deep respect   

There's been a lot written about Dick on multiple message boards over the years. We've even ID'd him in pictures sitting at meetings at Capitol. One Capitol employee's daughter remembered him through her Dad, who worked there. But this is the first time I've read what happened to him and his demise. Very unfortunate.

So who are you, Brett?  One post in and we've learned what happened to Dick Rising. Did you work at The Tower? Do you still work there?

I'm almost embarrassed to start this up again…but I'll do it anyway.  I once went to a restaurant where one of the waiters wore a name tag that read: Richard Eader.  I swear.

I knew a girl when I was a kid named Prissy Bottoms.  As she matured I believe she dropped the name Prissy ( I wonder why ?  )

It really is quite a particular type of message board that responds to the news that a person of interest was ACTUALLY MURDERED with a barrage of willy jokes.

Following the levity inspired by Richard J. "Dick" Rising's name, after learning of his passing almost 40 years ago I think it's important that we take a moment to pay our respects to the man that Dennis Wilson described as "One of the greatest guys I've ever met in my life" and of whom Smiley Smile message board poster BrettD said, "He was a great guy & I will always remember him with deep respect."

BrettD left us one post without further details on Dick's life.  Then he faded like the Beatles of Hey Jude.  He spelt "Capitol" incorrectly twice, but his timeline seems about right. If Brett did work for Mr. Rising, it was only for a year or less, because Dick passed away in mid September the following year (1974).

From a brief article in Billboard, 10/5/74:

LOS ANGELES - Funeral services for Richard J. "Dick" Rising, 48, who for 23 years worked for MGM and Capitol Records, were held Monday (23) at Forest Lawn Cemetary in Glendale. Rising was slain in his Hollywood apartment by two men who are being held by police on murder charges. Surviving him are his widow, Kathy, and two daughters.
