Well this is pretty much the greatest Beach Boys documentary out there In My Opinion..

But I have a question..

Where does all that Home Footage like the one in this documentary exist, are you guys in possesion of any,

Aside from smile boots, it's like the holy grail!!

I agree it's a nice documentary. I don't know about agreeing that it's the best Beach Boys documentary. As for the home footage, I'm pretty sure most (if not all) of it is from another documentary titled "Brian Wilson: A Beach Boy's Tale". Certainly worth tracking down as that's one of the best documentaries out there in my opinion. It's on YouTube somewhere. It also has more home footage than is shown in the documentary you mention.

Lots of interesting footage.  The one criticism I have of it is that it basically disowned the BB period between 1967-1973.    Brian didn't even seem completely out of participation until Carl and the Passions, yet he is made out to be the bedridden overweight wreck in solitude immediately after SMiLE.  I know he had a lot of mental issues during and after SMiLE but Brian hadn't gotten to this state until well into the 70's.

I usually couldn't care less about rock stars telling me they appreciate a legendary piece of music as much as I do (though it might be of some interest in terms of artistic influence), yet in this case I found what Eric Clapton had to say about Pet Sounds and Brian to be quite touching.

Really loved the beginning of the documentary. You can't beat a giraffe chewing to the sounds of I Know There's An Answer.

It's a while since I've seen them, but doesn't what you said ("The one criticism I have of it is that it basically disowned the BB period between 1967-1973") relate more to the Wouldn't It Be Nice documentary?  That was excellent on the early-mid-60s but kinda dismissive of the late 60s and early 70s and wallowed in the sensationalism of Dennis' decline and Brian's relationship with Landy.

But, if I enjoyed it so much, why am I sad right now...

I saw this a few years back when it was on TV and remember loving the home footage of Brian in his Porsche etc. I'd wanted to see it again  but couldn't remember the name, so it was a treat to find it here.

I've never seen the Wouldn't It Be Nice documentary before so I don't know if it does the same thing or not.  Did you find Art That Shook The World didn't convey this mentality though?  They pretty much said the Beach Boys were struggling through 7 albums without Brian after SMiLE before his mid-70's comeback. Brian was still the most important contributor to the group up until Surf's Up I found at least.  It just jumped out at me when they gave so much backstory about the early 60's.  Granted it's about the road to Pet Sounds, but what came after it is pretty viable to the history as well.

Does anyone know if this is available on home video?

The show was first broadcast on 20 July 2002. I don't think it has ever seen a DVD/Video release. It's generally a fine documentary although Mark Lamaar; a big fan of Brian Wilson by all accounts, seems surprisingly ignorant of Brian's work after Pet Sounds. The home movie footage is excellent.

FYI - most, if not all, of the home footage you see in ATSTW was originally broadcast in 1999 on A & E's "Biography" of Brian - probably the best documentary I've seen of Brian / Beach Boys. You can purchase a used copy from amazon.com:

Nice docu, but it breaks my heart to hear that Brian played frisbee with his Pet Sounds acetates.

It kind of makes me laugh...

"Trombone Dixie" with guide vocal: Wheeew...in the neighbour's pool.
"In My Childhood": Wheew...somewhere on a tree.
I don't wanna know what he did with his SMiLE acetates.

I know it's so sad- I totally agree with you, but the way you say it makes it even funnier...I mean there's no going back so you just have to imagine Brian winging one of them at Mike Love's head just for the hell of it....

Nice doco but as mentioned, for most of us here, nothing new. Enjoying the 'Behind The Sounds' series though. More detail and well crafted.

Agreed 100%, even today. OK, nothing new but utterly heartwarming!
