Title: Live in Las Vegas 1995
Post by: Jay on May 14, 2008, 01:09:06 AM
There is a blog out there that claims to have a recording of a Beach Boys concert in Las Vegas from 1995 with Brian singing the lead. Is it really Brian? The sound quality isn't that great, so it's hard to tell.

Yes, Brian rejoined the Boys onstage in Vegas, April of '95, for the first time in 5 years.  It was well documented in ESQ with picutures from the soundcheck and the performance appearing in the September issue.  Brian sang Don't Worry Baby, Surfer Girl, and In My Room.

That April, '95 show was at the Riviera.

It might be the less than perfect sound quality, but Brian's vocal sounds amazingly decent. I'm hearing somebody singing with him though. Was Adrian Baker still a member of the backing band? It sounds like him to me.

Do you happen to have that magazine you mentioned? I'd love to see those pictures.

Probably Matt Jardine, he was handling the falsettos in 95

Yep, that was Matt.
And yes, I have that issue of ESQ, but sadly, no working scanner.  :(
Sorry!

I think this is the concert: http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/4-28-95.html

Says on that site it was Jeff Foskett singing.

EDIT: Wow, I just got my hands on this concert and Don't Worry Baby is AMAZING. I'm convulsing with joyous laughter over how good it is.

Foskett was out of the band by then - if memory serves, his was a ten-year stint, first shows were in Sun City, December 1981.

edit: yup, says on his website bio he left in '91. Seems the ol' memory bank isn't as corrupted as i feared.

Ok, so where are people hearing this?  Since the forum doesn't allow bootleg sharing I'm asking if someone can point me in the right direction via an e-mail or personal message?  I'd love to hear this.

UPDATE: A little Google searching led me to the right place.  Nevermind.

Would this have been one of the last "significant" times Brian played/sang with the band? Did he play the entire show?

My understanding (from reading that ESQ article back in the day, and hearing other reports since) is that Brian played the entire show.  I believe this would indeed have been the next to last significant appearance Brian made with group.  The last being the Nashville blitz in 96.  And that is Matt Jardine singing with Brian.  Sounded FANTASTIC.

He played after Nashville some shows with the boys too.

To date, Brian's last gig with the BB was Navy Pier, Chicago, 9/8/96.

What I meant to say was, was this the last time that Brian sang lead and had a "spotlight" during a Beach Boys concert?

Far too many covers. Mike's vocals sound very poor most of the time (Do It Again, Rock and Roll Music). Really enjoyed Don't Worry Baby, of course. Under The Boardwalk - what the f***? Also, the beginning of Be True To Your School has to be the most annoying concert standard in Beach Boys history. It's not even remotely funny and still they've been playing it that way for ages.
