Title: Uncle Carl
Post by: NightHider on April 23, 2008, 08:17:53 PM
Christian Love sounding hauntingly like the Late, Great Carl Wilson.  He sounded much like Carl on Cool Head, Warm Heart as well as Mike's updated Brian Is Back from his 2003/4 solo effort.  Perfect fill in for the reunion gig, Christian on Carl's parts and Matt Jardine doing Brian's high parts.  Bring it on, baby...

Anyone ever heard either of Carl's sons sing before?   How's it sound?

Hmm...

I saw the band in Manchester and while I thought he made a good job of the vocals I didn't find his voice had the same warmth as Uncle Carl's. That YouTube clip just confirms that for me.

The only person I've ever heard who came close was Brian Kennedy the Irish singer; different, but warm and extremely talented.

Someone in Brian's band on the 02 UK Pet Sounds tour -  and I don't think it was Jeff Foskett - made a stunning Carl-like sound but I couldn't tell who it was; in the harmony mix coming from the stage it was more like they'd been joined by the spirit of Brother Carl. Eerie.

Speaking of "spirits coming", one time I saw a youtube video of the boys doing Forever in 1988 with Carl on lead vocal, and on a couple words, I'd swear he sounded like Dennis...then again, Carl's voice in '88 had gotten a little lower than it was 5-10 years before that, and both Dennis and Carl pronounce their words almost exactly the same.

I have a recording of Carl's son and Dennis's son singing Baby Blue together. At times one of them sounds rather Carl-esque but not completely. I don't think there's anyone in the world who sounds exactly like Carl.

I have that CD as well and agree with this assessment.  On Carnie's version of "Heaven", Justyn sounds more like Carl than he does on Baby Blue.   I do like Christian Love's vocals, however, I think he sounds NOTHING like Carl on Cool Head.  More like the poor man's Carl.

Yeah, I agree, Carl is one of a kind but when I listen to the early Carl performances of GV, man does Christian sound close....

Carl and Dennis' sons?  Interesting, what recording is this?  Commerical or bootleg?  Any details on the show?

Not a show.  They (Justyn, Carl's youngest son, and Carl, Dennis' son) were in a group by the name of In BLoom.  They recorded baby Blue for a CD put out by ESQ magazine as a tribute to Dennis a couple of years ago.  Al's acoustic Cal Saga was on that as well,  and Matt Jardine also had a song on there IIRC

I may be going out on a limb a bit, but I think Christian's sister Hayleigh sounds more like Carl than anyone else in the second generation. Her voice is higher generally speaking, but it has a lot of the some type of charactering that made Carl's vocals so amazing.

Does Christian share any of his old man's "nasal" qualities?

If Christian Love sounds like Carl, isn't that probably just a coincidence? Carl wasn't Christian's uncle, he was his dad's cousin. Imagine if people would compare you in any way to one of your dad's cousins, wouldn't you think it would be a little far fetched?

Where'd you hear her speaking voice?

If you think ANYONE has EVER sounded more like a young Carl singing that opening line of GV, I'd like to hear it.

Probably just coincidence that Al can sound exactly like Brian sometimes and he is not even related to the Wilsons?

"Her voice is higher generally speaking" means "Her voice is higher overall", not "her general speaking voice is higher".

When I first heard the tracks from Mike's current solo set, if I'd not known better I would have sworn it was Carl reprising his part on "Brian's Back"... and fwiw, during the London gig earlier this month, Christian pulled off pretty good imitations of Brian & Alan too.

Here's something I recall from that tour - far right of the RFH stage (looking from the audience) there was a single mike, very softly lit from above... and no-one ever used it. A very subtle tribute to Carl ? I like to think so...

That is pretty close, gotta admit.

Of course he probably tried to copy Carl's way of singing, but it doesn't seem very likely that Christian sounds like Carl because he is related to him. Cause most people wouldn't even really consider their father's cousins to be family.

What?  Then what exactly are they?  Carl is Christian's second cousin.  His father and Christian's grandmother are brother and sister.  Sure sounds like family to me.  Pretty tight genetic pool.  Some of the closet family I have are my dad's first cousins, because they're my cousins too, along with their kids, and there is a lot of similarity among us.  Maybe the similarity in their voices is part coincidence, but not all of it.

I see my mother's cousins and their kids a few times a year, and about a decade ago it was alot more than that. Why wouldn't they be considered family?

I was actually referring to Hayleigh's singing voice. I heard her sing at one of the Santa Monica CWF beach parties (Christian was there too). She also has a couple of tracks on the limited edition *Not for Sale* compilation, as does her brother.

My father and my mother have about 60 to 80 cousins each. I don't even know most of these people. I don't think there's even really a word for someone who's your dad's cousin... Is there?

60 to 80 cousins? Are you serious? My mom has, uh, four or five.

Your Mom really has enough aunts and uncles to have had 60 children between them ?  My mom was one of seven sisters and two brothers, but my cousin count on her side was no more than 20, 25 tops.

I believe that is called a "first cousin, once removed."

As for #s of cousins, some families generally use the term "cousins" for more than just first cousin. More complex relations, like the aforementioned, 2nd cousins, various step-relations, etc., get lumped into the easy word "cousin." So maybe if your parents had 60-80 cousins each, that would explain why. That or their families REALLY liked procreating.

I come from a catholic area, until the 1950s/1960s, every family here had between 5 and 10 children, some even more (one of my uncles has 14 brothers and sisters). People just had as many children as they could. My grandfather once went to church to ask permission to stop having children because it was hard enough to raise the six children he and my grandmother already had, but his request was denied. So they had two more children. They were simply told it was their duty to keep having children as long as they physically could.
