(PS- I have the SOT LP, the sequencing could be better and some of the takes are pretty random, but its Smile music on vinyl, if that's what you are looking for then its great. There are definitely things you can hear on the LP that you wouldn't hear on mp3s if that's what you mean in terms of depth and fidelity...still a bootleg nonetheless) Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: Bicyclerider on April 16, 2008, 11:08:00 AM If I remember correctly the Sea of Tunes Smile LP was a direct digital to LP copy of the Sea of Tunes SMile CD. Not essential if you have the SOT Vol 16 disc.
Somewhere I have the exact release date info but starting in the 80's through to the early 90's four different vinyl releases of Smile were made - Smile, Smile 2nd edition, Smile 2-LP, Smile 3-LP (the last done by Vigotone and uncredited on the label) and a rerelease of the 3-LP version which I believe did credit Vigotone. The last LP to come out was the Sea of Tunes LP I believe you're referring to. Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: NightHider on April 16, 2008, 11:58:55 AM 'Invest' meaning I have a teenager in the house keen on having stuff on vinyl who has the 'original' SMiLE session tracks vinyl on his B-day list. Thanks for the comments on sound quality, I think this is what he is looking for...

Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: MBE on April 16, 2008, 08:27:56 PM There are three single LP boots but the last one was the SOT. I actually still need the second one if anyone can help.
Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: Bicyclerider on April 17, 2008, 04:28:03 PM Here are the dates of the vinyl Smile bootlegs:
1983, late: First Smile boot 1985, March: 2nd edition 1990, May: 2 LP version 1992, June: 3 LP version (preceeded the Vigotone 2 CD Smile which was 1993, same content) Don't have a date for the second edition of the 3 LP version, it was probably around 1995. The Sea of Tunes LP I remember coming out in 2000 or so, if anyone has more specific dates let me know. Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: Mr. Wilson on April 18, 2008, 04:00:19 PM There is someone connected to this board i talked to on phone a couple of times...Made me aware Middle section of..Little bird is from Smile..BW got no writers or producer credit... he played me instrumental track..?? !!.. I also figured out there are some collectors who have unbooted Smile tracks = music from other years that is still unbooted.. BTW..I find the Cocaine sessions to be WAY overrated...!!!...Unlistenable..
Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: wgolly on April 18, 2008, 04:30:43 PM I remember seeing a single brother version back around 2003. The store had tons of them, but I didn't pick one up at the time.
I just got the SOT vinyl last year at a shop and I think the quality is really good. Some of the stuff form the box set is in stereo on this one, plus it has a couple unreleased bits like rock me henry. Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: ? on April 20, 2008, 10:21:27 PM So there actually are good pressings of the SOT out there? I have one and it's absolutely terrible, one of the worst records I have. The sound is considerably less defined than the cd version (losing many subtleties in the process) and it's a very noisy pressing. The 2 LP and the 3 LP sets are considerably better. For what it's worth, my SOT has white labels with Beach Boys Smile in generic type and a happy face with the copyright notice Surfin' Records 1971. Also, there's no discernible image on the back cover -only the track information and faint ink marks where the image should be.
Also, how many variations in the 3 LP set are there? I've seen it on: red, blue, and green vinyl yellow, blue, and green vinyl pink, blue, and black vinyl Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: MBE on April 21, 2008, 01:27:36 AM Mine's got a little surface noise (normal for a boot) but the sound quality is excellent.
Title: Re: 1967's SMiLE on LP? Post by: NightHider on April 22, 2008, 12:41:03 AM Thanks to all who posted. Received the package and we listened to it tonight.
Although "new", there were a few pops and cracks here and there but nothing overbearing and most of the tracks sound FANTASTIC, particulary Sur'fs Up and Vege-Tables. Some tracks are versions we had not heard before which was a nice surprise. The background harmonies had some real depth and everything else was crisper than the several CD's we have between us. Sleeve and artwork was nice quality too. Overall a real nice package. Now bring on the POB 3 LP set.... |
