Title: Beach Boys Museum
Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on April 08, 2008, 02:42:02 PM
I think the Beach Boys deserve a museum.  I nominate myself to curate.

Don't the Beatles have one in Liverpool?

Here's what I imagine:

The museum would house all kinds of memorabilia, instruments, photos, etc...

There would be screenings of relevant films.

A full-size replica of Western Studio 3 with audioanimatronic session players playing the California Girls session in perpetuity.

A smaller facsimile of Western would allow visitors to step up to the mic and record their own vocal harmonies.  An engineer and vocal coach would be employed to guide the visitors, and they would be provided with a CD of their efforts.

Mike Love's stage wardrobe would have it's own special wing.

A conference room for special events and concerts would exist.

It wouldn't have to be big, just a nice little museum.

Brian's ear.
But didn't Bob Dylan already convince him to donate it to the Smithsonian?

Not sure if a Beach Boys Museum would break even but I do think a Museum covering the LA music scene in a old studio like Western would be interesting though.

What about Al Jardines crate that he used to stand on in the studio? :lol

VDP as tour guide. Not only would it guarantee him regular work, but I can't think of anything better than spending an hour or two following him around, listening to him talk.

I don't even care if he talked about the Beach Boys, or if he did, whether he told the truth. It's just fun to listen to him talk.

It would be fun. I'd love to see it happen.

Why a replica of the old Western 3......rent that space and have it there.

I'd like to see Murry's pipe and eyeball!

I'd rather have EastWest use that space as a working studio than install audioanimatronic Hal Blaine in there.

I'm ok if they are actually using the space as a studio.  My fear is that it will get torn down and a Lowes, Micheal's, or Pet Smart will be built in this "holy" space.  Isn't the RCA Studio in a Nashville a museum now?

Audioanimatronic Hal Blaine...just don't do Carole Kaye or she'll sue.

An original SMiLE cover slick would be a must.

From what I understand, Doug Rogers got EastWest protected as a historic site, so it should be OK now.

Don't worry about Carol, she'll be in the Motown museum.

Carl's Rickenbacker would look cool on display.

Actually, Carl's Rickenbacker is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame & Museum in Cleveland...and it looks cool.

For the first year that the Hall Of Fame Museum was open ('95 - '96?), both an original SMiLE album cover slick and a copy of the original SMiLE booklet were on display courtesy of Frank Holmes. I doubt they will appear there again anytime soon - the story I heard was that Frank requested the items be returned to him after being on display for six months or so and, when the museum failed to comply, Frank traveled to Cleveland himself and demanded the items be given to him!

I'm pretty sure there is also one in the foyer of the Hard Rock Hotel in Bali.

Ofcource any Beach Boys museum should have a dark little room off to the side where patrons require a password to enter with a nod and a wink from the curator and that room will be full of every BB/BW boot ever released.

Can I make a request?  Please include an interactive animatronic Murry that tells us to "loosen up," "be happy," & ask us if we've made too much money.  Thanks.

Maybe with his poor old organ grinder, playing little girl lost and found...

ponghit mentioned a Murry figure speaking to patrons............reminds me of the giant pink floyd  figures at the apex of the R&R HOF shouting lines from the Wall.

You all know there is a Smithsonian subsidized Rock and Soul museum in Memphis covering the music of that town.

Maybe the Smithsonian could be convinced to do one in LA.   Get Dom Priorie to get the early mid sixties and Sunset Strip  wing going.

LA is so scattered for tourists to know where to go 1st for a bit of music history.,.  This would solve the problem.

Truly LA is a world famous spot for music and pop culture.    There are movie related museums there....why not a southern cal music museum?

I like it!  That's, of course, way more practical than a Beach Boys only museum.

Man I wish I had thought of that! :P

My wanderings around Hollywood and seeing the likes of Western just hanging on have made me think that a LA (or SC) music museum might do ok. Just think about the 60s-70s period alone.
Pity the buildings are often so ugly. They would be historical land-marks in their own right, like Abbey  Road.

Let the peolpe of L.A. or California pay for one. I want nothing to with it.

Anyone hear of the Hippie museum that was planned for my neck of the woods, in Woodstock? It was denied, Thank God.

Tough times...I lost my Looking Back With Love record and I feel so heartbroken. Seriously, I know the thread is in good fun but if it were reality this wouldn't be a good time to take federal money and pour it into a museum, even though they do it anyway....for instance a doll museum will get state funds this year in NY while I'm sure the $$ could be spent more intelligently. It would be cool if they put Brian's doll tower in there though....Just not with my $$. I need my $$ to replace my Looking Back With Love record...

Yeah there really should be a Beach Boys museum. It should be in Hollywood on the strip. Have displays of all their albums and singles everywhere. All the olympic white Fender guitars, Dennis' drums, a little Maharishi statue, surfboards, hot rods, etc. on display.

If there really were a Beach Boys museum, it would probably end up in London or in Fairfield, Iowa.

If I were super-rich, I would buy the entire mini-mall located at the south east corner of Santa Monica and Vine, which is the former site of Gold Star...lease part of it to Gold Star, maybe the Spector estate, and then use the rest for the Beach Boys museum.  I'd build a replica of the original Gold Star studios, call it...Silver Moon.

Interesting.  According to the wiki article on Duke Kahanamoku (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_Kahanamoku), "He also made surfing popular in mainland America first in Santa Cruz, California. This is where surfing first started in California."

I guess this is an argument that's almost 100 years old...but i'd go with The Duke, myself.
