Title: Fantastic Photo, Bellagio, please help!
Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on April 06, 2008, 12:49:17 AM
I just found this photo:

It's from the Brian home studio.  I would really like to see more photos from this set, or any from the home studio.  There is truly a dearth of photos from the interior of that studio.

Please, somebody's gotta have something else?

Steve told me he never took pictures, and asked me if I had ever taken pictures at my job...which I hadn't!

This photo and more from this set were published in a French edition of MOJO Magazine a couple of years ago.

I've seen that one somewhere...maybe the booklet for the "Caroline, Now" CD?  I know that one defintely has some great shots from the home studio.  So does the Badman book.

Caroline, Now, huh?  Never bought that one.

Well, thanks for the sources.

The Badman photos are so goshdarn narrow-angle...

The Mojo is November 2002.  I think some others from that session (mustachiod Dennis) are on Ed Roach's site.

I didn't find anything just now on Roach Clips.

Is that just the French edition of Mojo?

That one picture was in the standard UK editon of Mojo, but I swear I've seen other photos from that session SOMEWHERE...OK, now I remember...pages 52 & 53 of the Adam Webb Denny book (Dennis playing the drums).  Plus, the "Caroline, Now" CD booklet.  That has a great shot of Brian playing the drums, and one of him behind the mixing console.

True, photos from the same session are in the Caroline Now booklet, they're credited to  David Dalton.

aeijtzsche, here's a link to a page that leads to three online articles with the other Bellagio studio photos you seek:

http://www.gadflyonline.com/05-06-02/ftr-intro.html

The article by Barney Hoskyns has the mixing board photo; the one by David Dalton has the drums photo (or the other way around); the Neal Alpert article also has some of the studio photos.  There are other nice photos from that era outside the studio, too, some in color (albeit a little small, and you can't enlarge them, but it's something).   The articles are also interesting, besides the photos.

Thanks, I think I've seen all of those before...but it had been a while and I'd forgotten about some.

I guess I'm a hard guy to please.  Since I wasn't there, in order for me to create my little virtual recreation in my mind, I need to know what the room I'm in looks like.  That's why I'm always looking for wider angle studio shots.  So I can put together a 360 degree, 3D picture in my mind.

There's quite a few shots of Gold Star that are pretty wide angle...so I finally feel at home there.  Western I've seen some wide angle shots with nobody in there, which is OK but not as cool.

Ideally I'd have wide angle and then closer shots of every Hollywood studio in operation in the 60s.

With Brian's studio, between the picture in the original post, that one of Carl and Daryl Dragon from an old RS article, the few that were on the Gadfly site, and some of the video from the TTGA video, I still have no idea what the whole 40x30 studio looks like.  I can't picture a whole band in there set up, like for "This Whole World."

For me, pictures aren't just a fun thing to look at, they are a major source of escape, which is why I so joyfully react to new, revelatory ones.

I suspect the studio room may not have been very big, and maybe the lighting wasn't very good.  I've never seen a large-angle view, either, just those small photos of parts of the studio.  Another small look at that home studio is in the "Time to Get Alone" video in "American Band."  It's a brief glimpse, but it's something.

It was 40X27X15 which is way bigger than Western or Gold Star.  I actually took a bunch of screen shots from the TTGA film and posted them on the Desper thread a few years ago.  At least that film illustrates the interesting green nature of the room.

Did it have a window or door from Brian's room above?  That's what it looks like in the film.

I don't think there was direct access from Brian's room, but I know the part of the film you're talking about where it looks like there's some kind of little window or something.  It was an interesting set-up.  The control room was an old servant's quarters, and was several steps up from the main room, as well.

Me neither, but if my colleagues would've been Beach Boys, I would've.

Since it was in the house, I'll bet Marilyn has tons of pictures of it.  Of course that doesn't really help you... just sayin', I'll bet pictures exist.

Do you think it would be too pushy if someone emailed Marilyn and asked her to share some photos?  I thought I read here that she was a really nice person and was always willing to talk about her time with Brian and her thoughts on the Beach Boys.  Maybe someone (not just another "fan" like me) with a bit of "authority" or "status" in the Beach Boys fan world could do that?  I don't even know if those are the right words to use but you know what I mean...

And if someone contact Marilyn, please ask her for a photo of the legendary sandbox.

Yeah! It cannot be true that no one over all the years has never asked her about a picture of the sandbox.  She must have taken a picture of that! Then again maybe not.  I am guessing Leaf or someone must have asked already.

That's maybe the big unknown - I've been a fan/researcher/whatever for over 30 years, and I've never seen a photo of the sandbox, nor met nor heard of anyone who has. Crazy as it seems, there just may not be one.  The tent, yes... the Radish, yes...  even the 'doll tree'... but never the sandbox.

Andrew you should email and ask her; you have more credentials than any of us! Her email address is on her real estate home page.

Marilyn could and should put out a photo book. It would fill many gaps in our knowledge of Brian's health during there marriage. It would also just be plain cool.
