Title: Stack-o-Tracks 2- Your List
Post by: Surfer Joe on April 04, 2008, 11:40:05 PM
Been meaning to post this for years.  My standards are- forget what's been released or booted and what hasn't, or what exists and what may not- just make a good track list.  I'm allowing myself 18 tracks, like the 1990 CD (with 3 bonus tracks). Capitol only.  You use whatever standards you wish:

1.  Fun, Fun, Fun
2.  Custom Machine
3.  Don't Worry Baby
4.  The Warmth Of The Sun
5.  Kiss Me Baby
6.  Girls On The Beach
7.  Don't Back Down
8.  Good To My Baby
9.  Please Let Me Wonder
10. Guess I'm Dumb
11. Girl From New York City
12. You Still Believe In Me
13. Little Pad
14. Let The Wind Blow
15. Time To Get Alone
16. I Can Hear Music
17. Breakaway
18. Caroline, No

Kind of hastily assembled, even though I've thought about this album for years.  I know the mostly chronological order is kind of dull, and it's really crazy to bypass the Friends album- much as I love it- just didn't have any stand alone-backing tracks that made my top 18, oddly enough.

So tell me what a dope I am, and gimme yours...

Capitol Only!?  Geez, I don't know if I can stick to that.

1.  Farmer's Daughter
2.  In The Parkin' Lot
3.  Don't Back Down
4.  Little Girl I Once Knew
5.  Do You Like Worms?
6.  Celebrate the News
7.  Little Pad
8.  Kiss Me, Baby
9.  Do you Wanna Dance
10.  Slip on Through
11.  It's About Time
12.  Don't Go Near the Water (cool track under there whether you like the song or not)
13.  Surf's Up (Smile version would be bonus track)
14.  Trader
15.  Marcella
16.  All This is That
17.  All I Wanna Do
18.  Live Again

But much more important is would be a Stack-O-Vocals LP.

Mark - I know my list has it's technical issues, but a person can dream...in my dream world, the LDC/Shut Down 2 3 tracks show up in a basket mysteriously left at Alan Boyd's door...and later while researching for a Sunflower Box Set, it turns out a copy of the "Little Girl" multis were made before Brian taped all the nonsense over it--and it made it's way into the wrong tape box...

And of course the GV 8-track shows up too.

All possible with the exception of "warmth of the sun"..... no multi-track tapes for that one sadly.

When were the Little Deuce Coupe/Shut Down Vol. II tapes last seen in the vaults?

Wouldn't "Girl Don't Tell Me" be missing that 12-string guitar overdub?  And on that note, Mark, if you're still checking in, what do you think of my silly, ridiculous, nutty idea I've come up with to bring in Glen Campbell and Don Randi (or Leon, or DeLory) to add the missing guitar and piano parts to "Rhonda" so we could do a stereo mix with "all the parts"?  And then Glen could lay down that Girl Don't Tell Me line and we'd have our Stereo Summer Days!

It's been a while.  They weren't there when the Sea of Tunes mystery source (last I heard it really is a mystery since R.F. got his name cleared) went in and made the copies.  I suppose it's possible they somehow never even made it to the Beach Boys vault.

Intriguing lists, as I expected, and all as good as mine- still hoping to see more.

To me this album has been a no-brainer for years.  A certain number of us that could easily be projected would push old ladies down steps and steal pension checks just to buy as many volumes as they would issue, and the material is clearly worthy, and they could go to at least three volumes of 18 or more tracks with absolutely no dip in quality from the first one- even restricting it to the Capitol years. The only question mark is on stuff that's been out in other forms, like the box set bonus disc, all of Pet Sounds, or the '98/'01 sets. I wouldn't gripe over any duplication, though. Heck, go through Rhino Handmade and do a box. What's a few old ladies where art is concerned?

aeijtzsche, I only restricted my own list to Capitol for the sake of my sanity- and it still killed me to not represent Friends but the earlier years intrigue me the most.  I'd happily trade my line-up for yours (or several others) though. Just gotta have "Guess I'm Dumb".

Mark, always honored by your presence and responses here, and any information you toss us is seed before hungry pigeons.

For the record, I probably wouldn't push old ladies down the steps.

I think the Beach Boys would be the only thing that could push me to pushing old ladies.

The Beach Boys are directly responsible for me wanting to push an old lady down the steps - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_lLgFXbTtE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_lLgFXbTtE)

I figure it's only fair.  An old lady pushed me down the stairs when the Julio Iglesias box set came out.

Wow.  YouTube is the greatest, but has anyone had to pay for their old sins on YouTube like the boys from Hawthorne have? It's like their own personal Nuremberg trial.

So they collaborated artistically with the great Ruth Buzzi.  Brian's expression says it all.  This clip is sort of a dark cousin to the Jack Benny/Bob Hope skit.

But there's also proof that the Beach Boys were great on You Tube.

I think I'd be happy if people started putting up embarrassing moments from my life on You Tube.  It would mean I had arrived as a celebrity.

But there's also proof that the Beach Boys were great on You Tube.

Without any doubt.  There's a performance clip of "Don't Worry, Baby" mixed with vintage beach scenes that I watch at least once a week.  Just majestic. It helped turn my little nephews on to the Beach Boys. Hell, here it is:

I think I'd be happy if people started putting up embarrassing moments from my life on You Tube.  It would mean I had arrived as a celebrity.

And here we differ.  As I was posting that I was thinking about how grateful I am that no one was bored enough (or sober enough) to point a camera at me in the eighties, especially since YouTube allows clips of people with no pants.  And this, along with my general lack of greatness, is why I have scorned celebrity and live humbly but proudly as Joe, the crippled newsboy.
