Title: new comp announced - June 10 - U.S. Singles

Watch for two ‘best of’ albums coming, one for Al Green (which we have previously mentioned), and one for The Beach Boys. The Al Green comp is called Greatest Grooves, while The Beach Boys will have their set named The Beach Boys US Singles. Both are scheduled for June 10. They will join another high profile collection, one by Billy Idol called The Very Best of Billy Idol – Idolize Yourself.

I vote for all A & B sides, chronologically ordered and the correct single mixes.

That would be very cool and eminently logical.

Which is why it'll never happen.  ;D

I've a dim, distant memory of being told of something along these lines some years ago.

Wasn't it supposed to be called like 40 Top 40s or something?  I vaguely remember hearing something about that around the time of Endless Harmony and those releases....

Are these going to be remastered? 'Cause I really like the sound of the remastered songs on Warmth of the Sun, especially some of the Sunflower and Surf's Up tracks and 'Little Girl I Once Knew'.

I'll get it if it has a new stereo remix or a capella mix.  Please?

Not another comp! Isn't the Beach Boys hits compilation market pretty saturated already? How about releasing some stuff from the vaults, like the original Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again, the 1974 version of California Feeling, the Brian/Steve Kalinich poetry album, Fred Vail's C&W album (if anything from that was actually finished), some of Dennis' sessions with Daryl Dragon in '72, etc.

Good news: we're getting POB!!!

Fred Vail's C&W album (if anything from that was actually finished)

From what I remember off the top of my head, about 6 or so songs are completed aren't they? Something around that, and then I think there is a few instrumental tracks which never had vocals added to them. That's what I seem to remember reading anyway

It's about time for a comp with all original single mixes. But I don't think this will be it.

Why waste money releasing different mixes of songs that have already been released and rereleased a million times when they should be releasing stuff from the vaults? We need more Endless Harmony's and Hawthorne, CA's, not more Endless Summer's!

I'm probably alone with this, but before releasing archival material, the whole originally released catalog should be available on CD. I mean, radio stations were playing the single mixes back in the day, that's how the songs were first heard, those versions entered the charts or not. And sometimes different mixes make a big difference.

Can a good soul estimate how much CD space would the whole As & Bs output take? Capitol, Warner, CBS and Kokomo's one offs.

Not that I think they would release something like that for the 278 audiophiles out there...

There's a bootleg box around which take up 5 cd's plus one extra with promo's and stuff.

More Endless Harmony, Less Endless Summer.  Otherwise I've probably bought my last CD format BeachBoys recordings (last being WOTS).

I have the original greatest hits volumes 1, 2, and 3, the next generation of greatest hiits 1, 2, anmd 3, and all of the compilations beginning with ES and ending with WOTS.  I have onefers, twofers (both series) and all of the live and solo.  I also now have every LP in vinyl and have around 100 45 singles and PS's, so I have lots of "B" sides.

Its gonna take another Hawthorne to tempt me.

I will buy POB and a Carl comp if one ever gets here.

Oh, and of course, the long awaited SMiLE box. I'd but that.

How close are we to scraping the bottom of the barrell?

... because they've probably learned over the years that no matter how enticing they make an unreleased songs package, the greatest hits cd's outsell it every time.  Have you heard anything about "endless harmony" or the hawthorne cd set setting sales records?  I've heard plenty about sounds of summer setting sales records.

Um... The Complete US Singles Collection...   I believe it was created by a fan... not that I've ever heard/seen/owned it... but from what I'm told it's a pretty sweet collection    8)

In some ways, tho, i think the hits comps help pay for the stuff that we would rather hear.

And like it or not, we are the minority.  The majority of BB fans love the comps because they've got the hits.

I still think an all rarities comp would sell better than a middle of the road package like Hawthorne.

I'm always grateful for any Beach Boys release.  They could sell a comp every summer for eternity and I'd still be filled with glee over it.  Why?  Because I like the Beach Boys, and I don't have to buy it if I don't want.

And if a little nugget is put on there, say a backing track, a capella mix, stereo remix, it's worth it to me.

I'm one of those strange people who would rather hear a song 8 different ways than hear a new song.

And if a little nugget is put on there, say a backing track...

You and I are thinking the same thing: the backing track to "Do You Wanna Dance?" as a bonus cut to the singles collection. I'm hoping for a few more nuggets like this, too!

I love hearing different versions of songs I really like as well, but when something like "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" or "Loop De Loop/Sail Plane Song" comes out I'm over the moon. I guess the POB/Bambu release is the best of both worlds: remastered versions of tracks I love, plus nearly two dozen previously unreleased ones.

Huzzah!

This is when it's nice to know we have guys like Mark and Alan pulling for us.  Because, despite all the frustrating stuff that goes on in Beach Boys land, they're big fans--and they like putting interesting stuff out.

Now, if we could get everybody at EMI to be huge Beach Boys fanatics as well...

I'm guessing a few 45 A sides between, say, 1961 and 1996... but that's just me thinking aloud...  ::)

I can see the posts now - "why isn't "Catch A Wave" on this new comp ?"  ;D

Hopefully - if it's only the 60s A & B sides, that's a 2CD set, maybe 60 tracks.

I know the man to ask...  :)

Uh, the board of directors at EMI?  You'd have you work cut out for you and also ruin any chance of any future Beach Boys releases.  Also, you'd go to jail!

Such vitriol, in some people, kicking people's asses for releasing records (that we don't have to buy) from a band we love.  I'd hate to see what you want to do to people that put out records by acts you don't like.

Even if all it is is 16 2-track CDs I think I'd get it. I have the first Stones set and The Beatles EP box and if they make the packaging nice enough, it could make for a great set.

I'm with you Andrew. Like I said elsewhere, there isn't enough time in the day to return to the CD player every time a CD single needs swapping, and I ain't wearing out my carpet for the sake of something that'd fit on one or two regular CDs.

Wasn't there a bootleg set of US singles quite recently, which amounted to 6CDs? Wonder if the "16" was a mistyping? I can't see Capitol EMI putting out a 6 CD set.

I might be in the minority here, but a singles box seems a little redundant, just another way for Capitol to milk the cash cow that is the Beach Boys. I mean, all of the singles are already on the countless comps and on all of the 2fers. I really don't care about "original single mixes". If there are previously only available in mono tracks getting remixed into stereo, then it might be worth it. But why not something like the Beatles Anthology for the Beach Boys. That would be a lot more appreciated by fans than yet another "compilation out just in time for summer".

But whatever's in store for the new comp, Linett's probably doing a fantastic job with it.

Its probably sixteen CD singles in tiny reprinted picture sleeves.

This seems especially likely, considering that there were EXACTLY 16 Capitol 45s originally issued with picture sleeves:

 1. "Surfin' Safari" b/w "409"
 2. "Ten Little Indians" b/w "County Fair"
 3. "Fun, Fun, Fun" b/w "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"
 4. "I Get Around" b/w "Don’t Worry Baby"
 5. "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)" b/w "She Knows Me Too Well"
 6. "Wendy"/"Don't Back Down" b/w "Little Honda"/"Hushabye"
 7. "Dance, Dance, Dance" b/w "The Warmth of the Sun"
 8. "Do You Wanna Dance?" b/w "Please Let Me Wonder"
 9. "Help Me, Rhonda" b/w "Kiss Me, Baby"
10. "California Girls" b/w "Let Him Run Wild"
11. "The Little Girl I Once Knew" b/w "There's No Other (Like My Baby)"
12. "Barbara Ann" b/w "Girl Don't Tell Me"
13. "Sloop John B" b/w "You're So Good to Me"
14. "Good Vibrations" b/w "Let's Go Away For Awhile"
15. "Heroes and Villains" b/w "You’re Welcome"
16. "Darlin'" b/w "Here Today"

But then the title 'single collection' is misleading. If I buy a single collection, I want the original singles and not alternate versions of those songs.  ;D

Sounds like the same RCA/BMG did with Elvis a few years ago. Only that those singles were actually released as such and added some more no1 onto Elvis' UK-statistics (btw there was one bonus track each on the singles). The box that was released afterwards was also a success iirc. Hopefully the Beach Boys will also have succes. I think it's a very nice idea. It's kinda a new way to bring out a best-of  ;D

Found it... the sixth disc was a bunch of promo-only tracks and other slight oddities. (Excuse the formatting -  this is a crude tidy-up of a cut & paste).  The full line-up is on Bootlegzone.com and yes it does appear to be a fan compilation rathe than a silver disc boot.

Who is the fool that keeps milking the Beach Boys back catalogue!!!

I wanna meet him and kick his ass

Uh, the board of directors at EMI?  You'd have you work cut out for you and also ruin any chance of any future Beach Boys releases.  Also, you'd go to jail!

Such vitriol, in some people, kicking people's asses for releasing records (that we don't have to buy) from a band we love.  I'd hate to see what you want to do to people that put out records by acts you don't like.

Hey, sorry I sounded a bit out of control, but it makes The Beach Boys look very cheap having all these comps being released, it also keeps taking focus of there actual albums.

Come on how many greatest hits do they have it has to be over 500 now, and have you seen some of the tracklisting on some of them, it's  just ridiculous

Interesting.  Plenty of Stereo Remix gold there.  Particularly numbers 5, 8a, 9a, 12b, and 16a.  Please God.

But then the title 'single collection' is misleading. If I buy a single collection, I want the original singles and not alternate versions of those songs.  ;D

Bonus tracks.  You get the original A and B sides, and then a few bonus tracks so each CD isn't only 5 minutes long.

I still don't see how that would lead to violence, especially considering as I said before that nobody is making you buy them, or even go to the "B" section in the record store to look at them.  Between the Beach Boys never putting anything out and putting out Comps, I'll take the latter.  The comps will "win" new fans, weird fan-oriented releases won't.  And if some hits comp is able to draw even one person into the Beach Boys and they find the joy that I have from them...it's worth putting out a hits compilation every year, if just for the advertising.

You mean sixteen 3-inch Mini CD's for each single incl. bonus track? That, of course, would be the ultimate singles on CD experience.

Can't help noticing that the stereo "IGA" isn't announced as either a new remix or previously unreleased. I'm thinking, maybe live ?

And btw it's not ALL the singles 1962-65. - not that I personally give a flying one, but "Barbara-*******-Ann" was released December 1965.  ;D

Oh, and the price in the Uk is £72.99.  :o

Wow....This sounds really nice, although the 'mock sand' might be a little wierd.
Why do they think we need "Punchline" again?
Yes, I know it wasn't Capitol, but wouldn't the "Surfin'"/"Luau" single had been a nice bonus?

It probably is since it was remixed in stereo for last year's WARMTH OF THE SUN collection.

Seems like the Beach Boys will never stop eating their own. Once again they are showing no respect for Dennis Wilson. The release date is the day before POB's new release. Stupid MF's. Oh...right...its just a coincidence.

Maybe it will get pushed back a month or two (as usually happens with BBs releases), while Dennis' package hits the streets on time.

I hope you all get the humor in that last part...

No kidding. Maybe when planned, the BBs assumed POB would be out when it was originally--or even revised to be--scheduled for release, and their months-later comp could ride a wave of renewed interest.

One more clarification/ correction......

Disc 5 cut #4- Be True.... is the mono version from the "Little Deuce Coupe" lp

BTW the release date of the box has nothing to do with the POB release by Sony except perhaps that everyone wants to release B. Boys product in the summertime.....

Jon, it IS a coincidence.  The Beach Boys and Brother Records have been very supportive of the POB reissue, jumping through hoops to find masters and clear various legal issues in order to facilitate this release... and I know this because I was doing a lot of the jumping.

You also have to consider the numerous delays for the release date of POB, which had nothing to do with the Beach Boys (but, to be fair, were about everyone involved wanting to make sure that the POB reissue was the absolute best it could be).

The ridiculous assertion that the Beach Boys are "again showing no respect for Dennis Wilson" serves no purpose other than to stir up old baggage and make it more difficult to do these kinds of projects in the future.

Same mix. There's nothing to tweak since it is just two track stereo....... Wish we had more (like the vocals) but it is still one of my alltime favorites. Simply amazing how the record was conceptualized with that backing track. Not at all what you would expect.

Any chance we'll have another podcast series from Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce (and Mr Marks for the tracks he played on) for this new release?

Also, am I right to assume it will include new stereo mixes like we had for WOTS last year? And will they be available to download as single tracks on I-Tunes etc? I thought the stereo versions of Kiss Me Baby and Please Let Me Wonder were great...so a stereo version of something like She Knows Me Too Well would really be somthing too.

Cheers

Off the top of my head, here's a ist of the new stereo mixes:

When I grow Up To Be A Man
She Knows Me Too Well
Do You Wanna Dance - track
Little St. Nick

I have no idea regarding downloads or any possible podcast. That's EMI's department.....

Yeah, I was going to say...not like there's much to tweak.

It is quite a backing track -- I've tried for years to get the Danelectro bass sound, and the nifty little sort of off-kilter percussion that Hal does on the basic is neat.  The harpsichord is, as you say, unexpected contextually.

Really looking forward to the DY Wanna Dance track too, Larry Knectel's O.D.ed bassline is one of my favorite moments from the Today album.

Speaking of which, it will be nice to add a few more stereo remixes to the Today stereo playlist.

You guys know I appreciate the hoop jumping!

Well...Guess I'm Dumb. It would be nice if the two releases could have been spaced out for oh...two weeks...a week. But I guess i'll have to settle for 24 hours. I have no interest in stirring anything up...I'm just a fan reacting, and my commentary is directly from the heart. You don't need to remind me of your contribution or hoop jumping on POB. If I'm somehow being politically incorrect by reacting to what i think is a dumb scenario, it wasn't meant to disrespect you, that's for certain. But if you can't see why a fan who has been on the edge of his seat for decades...waiting for Dennis to get a release date, and when he finally does...then learn that the BB's are releasing product the day before...if you can't understand why that fan wouldn't be disappointed, then you're not the Alan Boyd I know...you are an imposter. Ha! Reveal yourself Mike Love!! I rip the Alan Boyd mask away and there he is...the evil Lovester once again thwarting Dennis and all that is good. I've had the flu for a few days and things are a little surreal.

Jon, you're right - it IS an awkward release scenario, and I totally understand why a fan would be aggravated.  But it's a record company thing, and the labels aren't coordinating their schedules, which in the case of the singles collection was set sometime last year.

It's not even a "right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing" scenario; it's more like "the right hand had no idea there WAS a left hand."

Feel better, Jon!  Enjoy the sur-reality of it all, if you can.

(Just to be certain, I took a moment and peeled off the "Alan Boyd" mask.  What it revealed may be too disturbing for even the scariest sci-fi movie, but rest assured, I'm definitely not a Beach Boy... and hopefully not a "Beached Boyd")

I might have to wait on the singles thing and save my pennies and save my dimes.  Cool collection, and worth getting...but steep.  POB/Bambu, tho...day one!

Do you guys know if they're planning to have it in the bigger stores?  Often with BB releases, i go looking on the day of release and simply CANNOT find it ANYWHERE.  Which sucks a whole lot.

I guess I don't get how you can know all you don't need to be reminded of and still vent your position. I haven't had the flu but things get more surreal to me every day.

Actually, on second thought, I don't see how one would mess up the other; seems to me one would help the other with the BBs release being more help to POB than POB helping BBs. I've been wrong before though.

Don't get me wrong - i WILL be picking up that singles collection, if for no other reason than to help send the message to EMI that the BBs are still relevant to the "record-buying" public.  I am convinced that support of projects like this and other GH releases is what paves the way for the Hawthorne Californias to come out.

I suppose to a point that is true. But honestly, I don't know if I will buy it. I might wait until I find it used somewhere. Because frankly, I am sick of buying packages of which I already own 75-90%. I'd like to send the label that message. I'll be honest, I prefer the music on the singles comp. to the POB/Bambu music. And yet I'm more likely to go out of my way for the latter. Sell us more new stuff!

Well I am going to get it too, but like I said I'm just going to wait. Firstly for the price to go down as it's too expensive for me and secondly there is just too many other things that I have above that on the list of things to get (and POB/Bambu would be #1)

That's what I have done in the past - bought it 2nd hand - just purely on the fact that I can't afford some of this stuff. For example The Pet Sounds Sessions I bought second hand and I might have to do that for this one like you.

But I totally agree Luther, if there is a release with any new recordings then I will go with that over a greatest hits with a few new remixed tracks any time. Don't get me wrong I LOVE hearing the stereo remixes (though sometimes I still prefer the mono mixes) but I will take unreleased songs/recordings over them anyday

I ought to be clear: if I buy the collection later or second-hand, it's not for lack of funds. It's my choice not to give my money for something of minimal value to me. I love the BBs, but that doesn't mean I will pay full retail price for packages of mostly old material. If I were a millionaire, I still wouldn't rush out for these repackagings with a handful of new mixes. If others will, cool. But not me.

BTW the release date of the box has nothing to do with the POB release by Sony except perhaps that everyone wants to release B. Boys product in the summertime.....
[/quote]

I'm writing an article about the POB re release and I find the recent news (and timing) of the singles box quite interesting to say the least. I agree with the previous posting that said it was unfortunate that Brother has decided to release at the same time as POB trying to take the spotlight away from Dennis after all these years. One thing I learned in my interviews is that Mr. Linett and Mr. Boyd were not involved with the creation of the new album other than fetching the tapes from brother vault. Is that the reason for the timing of the singles box? I know I will be spending my money on Dennis and wait for a review copy of the singles box.

Well, I'm literally flat broke, haven't made a dime of money in almost a year...but I'll sell plasma to get both of the new things.  Happily, they come out a few days before my birthday.

Jon - I get how you feel, and to me it's just nice to know that the people working on this stuff care so much.  You, Mark, and Alan and several more...I mean, if some of the people posting here knew how much the three of you care...

John,

It is two totally difft. labels who don't pay attention to what the other is releasing and when...... It isn't like the movie business.

Neither Brother, Alan or myself have anything to do with the timing of the singles box , and you can ad EMI to the list of those having no say in when POB is released. As for the release date of the box, That's what EMI does..... decides what to put out and when. Would EMI have put out POB and the box at the same time? Probably not... but Sony does what it thinks best for Sony and btw they have already delayed POB at least twice.

Besides I don't really see how one release can have anything but a positive effect on the other. And now I am done, since somehow the amount in the glass seemingly can never satisfy everyone, and in this case it would seem the only complaint is the glass is overflowing.

Enough with the corny metaphors and all the rest. Buy em or don't whatever makes ya happy........

This post will qualify for naive post of the yaer, but I don't care....

I find it hard to believe that somebody - anybody! - at Capitol wasn't aware when Pacific Ocean Blue was going to be released. It has to be SOMEBODY'S job to know things like that. Just the fact that you work at a record company, AND the record company of The Beach Boys, you would think that somebody couldn't help but STUMBLE upon an article on the release of POB and mention it to somebody, who would mention it to somebody, who would....

Anyway, I don't think it will ultimately matter, because I believe the Beach Boys' comp will tank. I think the audience for this release is limited, very limited.

I have to agree with ML, actually I pre-did, that these releases will help each other rather hurt each other. If the new BBs comp generates interest for BBs music it will increase interest in Denny's music rather than suppress it.

Is Denny's record company upset by a coincidental release?

Wait until you see the announcement of the 'Lucky Old Sun' DVD Set next week.  :lol Cold war all over again.

Honestly, I don't think someone who would have bought the Legacy Edition won't buy it now because of the Singles Collection. En contraire, the BB release will help POB getting even more attention... IMO.

Which is why it's a limited edition, oddly enough.

Could the conspiracy theorists/Love bashers please consider this - the initial release date for POB/Bambu was March, then May, at which time we knew nothing about the Capitol project, which had evidently been in the works since mid-2007. It's as plausible as Al Fayed saying that Diana told him she was pregnant and 'the establishment' mounting a world-wide operation to kill her within an hour.  Would Sony/Legacy have contacted Capitol saying "we've got a BB singles box coming out in June 2008, you releaseing and BB related stuff around then ?" Don't think so. It's a coincidence, that's all.

I'll be getting the DW stuff from day one. When the singles box is about £25 on amazon... maybe.

That's about $140 too rich for my blood. Maybe if they did a vinyl version but even then it's still a hell of a lot of money.

With the timing of the two releases, every review of the singles comp will probably mention Dennis' POB release, and vice versa - it has the potential for great cross promotion.

I don't understand the negative talk about the singles comp.  Sure, we didn't get the mono/stereo remixes rereleases of the single albums we were hoping for years ago - but this is the next best thing - original mono single mixes and stereo remixes (or live takes where stereo isn't possible) - in collectors' packaging, as has been done for The Rolling Stones and the Beatles.  Don't the Beach Boys deserve a similar singles collection package as their peers?  And we're getting "extra" value because of the stereo remixes.  I assume the 45 picture sleeves will be reproduced.  Really, to carp about this is petty in my opinion.  If you're strapped for cash, sure, don't buy it, but when it goes out of print you'll all be kicking yourselves.  A collection like this is giving Brian and the Beach Boys the respect they deserve for creating one of the finest bodies of work in the singles medium in the 60's - finer than the Stones certainly, the Beatles - well, arguably comparable.

For those who want a collection of "new" material - meaning unreleased - I may be in the minority here, but besides the Smile sessions there's not much unreleased material that's that great.  Most of it was unreleased for a reason.  And don't we have most of that unreleased stuff on "unofficial" releases anyway?

I won't be kicking myself. I'll buy it used for $25--maybe. Why maybe? Because I don't care about cute little singles packaged separately. And I only find new stereo mixed moderately interesting. Sometimes, yes. At any given moment, I may marvel at some. But for general listening, it's just not that important to me. I know some people love it. Good for them. I'm not angry about the singles comp, I just don't care. Those who do, great. They'll buy it. Enjoy. I just don't want something that's more a marketing device than a musical release.

For those who want a collection of "new" material - meaning unreleased - I may be in the minority here, but besides the Smile sessions there's not much unreleased material that's that great.  Most of it was unreleased for a reason.  And don't we have most of that unreleased stuff on "unofficial" releases anyway?

I half agree with you. A lot of the unreleased stuff isn't great. But plenty of it is good--as good as a lot of what was released. (No, not all secret gems that are better than the best. I'm not one of those who goes on like that.) And if something is pretty good, well-done, mostly complete, I'd like to have it. And that which we have unofficially, I'd rather pay for through official channels and receive in clean-sounding, well-mixed, well-mastered versions.

When the well runs dry, fine. I'm done. I still won't need the repackagings of hits. I've got what there is, and that's enough. It's just that there are more interesting (to me) things that still could be done. And it's frustrating that those aren't the things that are often getting done. Here I am excited about POB/Bambu, and I only like about half of POB. But at least it's got something new; it's a new project. I guess there are just different types of fans who want different things, and I'm not the type off whom the labels believe they make the most profit. I understand that. I will buy everything, but prefer only to buy it once.

I have the BB Good Vibrations 30 years 5 cd disc set.....would it be worth my money to buy this new release?  My set pretty much covers everything.

Why don't they come out with a dvd set like Beatles Anthology, with unseen footage and songs in a documentary...I would be more interested in that, the families and friends could dig deep into their film footages and drag out the studio footages etc.

That's my--and probably several other people's--dream Beach Boys project, sort of like a super, souped-up Endless Harmony (which I did love, but just wasn't long enough to have the depth I'd prefer). Sadly, with each passing year, someone who could contribute to it dies, and the memories of the people still alive fade further. Honestly, I suppose it wouldn't happen anyway, because I can't imagine the Beach Boys side to want to participate if Leaf is involved or in charge, and I can't imagine the B. Wilson team participating if he weren't. (Obviously, that's speculation on my part.)

We'd all love an Anthology style multi DVD set chronicling the Beach Boys - but is there a market for it?  The Beach Boys do not have the sales pull and cachet and press awareness of the Beatles.  Look how the announcement of unreleased Star Club tapes made the national news - do you think a discovery of an unreleased 63 tape of a Beach Boys concert would have made the same splash?  The hard core Beach Boys fan base is quite small that would buy such a thing IMO.  I think the way to go for unreleased video/studio material is to release it in limited editions via a Beach Boys website (like Rhino Handmade) where it could be profitable - as apparently Alan Boyd et al were planning to do (whether by download or by selling through the website) but for whatever reasons they have been unable to get going.  As we all know, getting clearances from all the parties and Capitol et al is a near insurmountable task.

You're exactly right that it would almost definitely have to be done on a boutique label, online, etc. I don't think any of us believe that it could be done in a single drop of a hard-copy, big budget sort of project in every store worldwide with the corresponding marketing campaign that surrounded Anthology. I mean, remember how omnipresent Anthology was!?

But by combining existing footage and interviews, plus doing extensive new ones with those people still surviving, the results could be amazing, even if it were released in segments in an online-only format or with minimal marketing. The hardcore fans would probably all buy it. I don't think it would set the world on fire, but it's hard to imagine it not turning a profit.

Sign-off by everyone would appear to be the hardest thing. I wonder if the best way to go about it would be by having someone unattached to any of the principals do the piece. Bring in a big-name producer or director to handle it, pitching it as creating a true historical document of an important American cultural phenomenon. Make sure everyone knows going in that this director is trying for objectivity, and so everyone will probably look like the jackass he was at some point, and like the hero he was at some point. (Note, I avoided villain and hero, because that would be lame even for me to say.) But make sure that everyone knows he'll be treated respectfully and fairly as a person--not reduced to the easy caricatures that even many of us consider these people to be.

I can dream...

POB Legacy edition = some brand new music that nobody outside the people working on it have ever heard.

BBs US Singles box = songs that most of us have many times over, albeit some in new mixes.

Seems a no brainer:  do whatever I can to buy POB/Bambu the day it comes out (or bribe someone on the docks to get it the night before), and buy the Singles box the following payday.

For a big name to do the Anthology style video - would Scorsese be interested?  He did the Band, Dylan and now the Stones - wouldn't it be nice (no pun intended) if he could add the Beach Boys to that list?  He's a Spector fan (I remember Be My Baby in Mean Streets) - any indication he likes the Beach Boys?

He put "Sail On Sailor" in "The Departed" (which coincidentally I just watched last night).  He also seemed very appreciative of Brian when the two of them were inducted into the Kennedy Center Honors this past fall.

'The Beach Boys: U.S. Singles Collection - The Capitol Years (1962-1965)' Limited Edition Boxed Set to be Released June 10 by Capitol/EMI

    Deluxe 16-CD & Digital Collection Gathers Iconic Band's Earliest A &
B-Sides, Plus Alternate Mixes and Live Versions

    HOLLYWOOD, Calif., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- On June 10, Capitol/EMI
will release the first complete collection of The Beach Boys' early Capitol
Records singles, spanning the years 1962 to 1965. The Beach Boys: U.S.
Singles Collection - The Capitol Years (1962-1965) will be released in a
highly-collectible, limited edition boxed set of 16 CDs and as a digital
collection. Each of the deluxe boxed set's CDs includes an original
single's A and B-sides, plus other versions of most tracks, from additional
mono and stereo mixes to live recordings. Eight previously unreleased mixes
are among the new collection's 66 tracks.

The CD boxed set's lavish packaging includes 16 individual CDs in
digipaks with faithfully reproduced original single artwork, plus a 48-page
hardbound photo book with faux sand finish, housed in a striking '60s
hotrod and surfboard-inspired red and yellow box with wood inlay.

The hit-packed set begins with 1962's "Surfin' Safari" and its B-side,
"409," in their original mono mixes, paired with a 1965 concert recording
of "409." Also included are The Beach Boys' timeless #1 smash Pop hits "I
Get Around" and "Help Me Rhonda," and Top 10 Pop hits "Surfin' USA,"
"Surfer Girl," "Be True To Your School," "Little Saint Nick," "Fun, Fun,
Fun," "When I Grow Up To Be A Man," "Dance, Dance, Dance," "The Man With
All The Toys," and "California Girls." The new collection's other hit sides
include "Ten Little Indians," "Shut Down," "Little Deuce Coupe," "In My
Room," "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?," "Don't Worry Baby," "Wendy," "Little
Honda," "Do You Wanna Dance?" and "Please Let Me Wonder."

In 1961, The Beach Boys began singing about America's newest craze,
surfing. What followed was a wave of hits that vividly expressed the
lifestyles, dreams and ambitions of America's youth. Their signature sound,
full of sun-drenched harmonies, golden melodies and descriptive lyrics,
delivered a taste of the free and easy California lifestyle to listeners
around the world. The music of The Beach Boys brings optimism and a beam of
Southern California sun wherever it is played.

For more than four decades, The Beach Boys, originally comprised of the
three Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and
school friend Al Jardine, have recorded and performed the music that has
become the world's favorite soundtrack to summer. In 1962, Hawthorne
neighbor David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits on
Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined
the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring.

The Beach Boys: U.S. Singles Collection - The Capitol Years (1962-1965)
captures all of the earliest fun in the sun highlights from America's Band
in one gorgeous, artful package. It follows the 2007 release of The Warmth
Of The Sun, a new career-spanning collection compiled and sequenced by the
band's Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson to
complement 2003's double-platinum certified Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best
Of The Beach Boys.

Someone will buy or pre-ordered the box?

 ???Yes, someone will!

I just realized that Vol 2 will neatly have the same amount of CD's, 15 singles to complete the US Capitol 60's singles, plus no doubt another bonus CD.  That should have unreleased mixes/stuff that should surpass the first collection - stuff like:
stereo mix of Girl Don't Tell Me
Party tracks There's No Other, Barbara Ann and Devoted to You in stereo
stereo Smiley and Wild Honey tracks: Gettin' Hungry, Wind Chimes (bonus track: Smile stereo Wind Chimes?), Wild Honey, Darlin'.
Mono Friends mixes of Little Bird, Friends, Bluebirds.

For extra tracks - on the Heroes single, how about instead of the stereo Hawthorne version, how about a Durrie Parks or Mike Love acetate/tape of the fabled five to six minute version?  And the original Capitol picture sleeve?

For the "bonus" CD, how about a stereo Smile Vegetables rather than the Hawthorne Smiley version (it was going to be a single at one time after all), the Brian mono mix of Trombone Dixie, and the Brian mono mix of the Child track?

Mono single mixes from the post-mono album era would be really nice if there is a volume two, although I think a few of them might just have been fold-downs from the stereo.  I'd be quite happy with a volume two following the same format as this one.

I mean, realistically, there's not going to be anything on it that's not related to a single...but the singles were were pretty great and maybe Mark'll push for a couple more fun remixes, or an, ahem, a capella mix or 15.

But right now, I'm just going to enjoy this volume.  Really looking forward to it.  This is going to be a strange June for me...I'll be buying at least three records/record sets on the day they come out, which is rare enough in a year for me.

I love the Beach Boys!

The only pukka mono mix (i.e not a fold-down) of a stereo track I'm aware of is the US "Friends" 45, but that's been released on GH2.

I don't see an issue with the releases at the same time.
To be honest, I don't think another BB comp coming out however they dress it up is very newsworthy, but in the last couple of weeks i've seen loads of articles in magazines and online about the POB reissue.
Anyone who is a Beach Boys fan is going to go for POB straightaway (myself included) as
1) It's cheaper, 2) It's rare and unreleased material, whereas the BB boxset - though nice - is more a 'collectors' item to my mind which only a hardcore fan will get. I think the POB reissue ironically is going to appeal to a wider audience due to the amount of exposure it's had recently plus it's reputation has been building up for 30 years.

Looks like this will be a slightly more interesting release than what I thought it would be.  Not sure yet if I will be picking this one up but those new stereo remixes are very tempting...

I wonder if this will go up on iTunes?

Little Bird had a dedicated mono mix as well - the mono mixing session/attempts are on Goodbye Surfing Hello God.
