The Return of Dennis Wilson’s “Pacific Ocean Blue”

In September of 1977 Dennis Wilson released what is still today, in my opinion, the best solo album ever released by a Beach Boy (yeah, sorry Brian) called Pacific Ocean Blue. After its initial release, the record was cut out in 1979 and while it appeared briefly on CD for a few months in 1991, it’s been out of print ever since.

Through the years I’ve had the pleasure of working on hundreds of albums that I love, but as a Beach Boys fan the one that I’ve always wanted to see reissued was Pacific Ocean Blue. If you’re familiar with the record then you know what I’m talking about; if you haven’t heard it it’s like discovering a buried treasure. If you’re already a fan of this album then you’ve heard the stories of why it’s been out of print…it’s been tied up in litigation, labels fighting each other as to who owns the rights, the tapes were lost, the Beach Boys don’t want it out, Jim Guercio doesn’t want it out, none of which were true.

That’s not to say it’s been easy getting to this stage but that’s another story. The good news is yes, it’s finally being released on June 17 a little over 30 years after its original issue.
The best news of all is that it’ll have 20 previously unreleased tracks including several songs that have never even been bootlegged like Dennis’ version of “Only With You” (originally recorded by the Beach Boys for Holland), “Tug Of Love” (yanked off of the original album at the last minute in favor of “Farewell My Friend”) and “Holy Man” all newly mixed by John Hanlon who recorded many of the original sessions.

The first disc of our Legacy Edition will be the original album newly remastered by Vic Anesini from the 1st generation master tapes, which for whatever reason were not used for the ‘91 CD, and the 4 bonus tracks listed below. Disc Two, Bambu (The Caribou Sessions), is a roundup of various tracks that Dennis recorded during his term as a solo artist for Jim Guercio’s Caribou Records. Bambu was to be the follow up album to Pacific Ocean Blue but was never completed. One point I want to make about the unreleased recordings is that we’re not saying this is what Dennis intended to be the finished Bambu album but a compilation of the best tracks he recorded during the POB/Bambu/Caribou period. The truth of the matter is that Dennis recorded constantly during this period and tracks that have been labeled as Bambu tracks over the years were started before and during Pacific Ocean Blue sessions. Who knows for sure what would have ended up on the final album but we do have the roadmap for where he was going.  We’ll save all of the details for the liner notes but the bottom line is if you’re a fan you won’t be disappointed. If you’re not familiar with anything I’m yapping about then prepare to become a fan of a great lost classic album by a grossly underrated artist that hopefully will be rediscovered by a whole new audience. Or to put it bluntly as my dear departed friend Nick Venet once said to me, “You either get it…or you’re an asshole”

One other thing before you send me hatemail frying my ass for not including your favorite Dennis track (how could you leave off “Denny’s Drums”?) Keep in mind that the purpose of this set was to focus on a specific period of Dennis’ recordings and not present a full career retrospective. Hopefully this release will be successful enough that we’ll get to see a proper Dennis anthology in the future.  That set would of course include “Lady”, “Sound of Free”, “Forever”, “Little Bird”, “Be With Me”, “San Miguel”, “Cuddle Up”, “Be Still”, “Slip On Through” and so many more on 2 CD’s at least. Last thing I want to say… in addition to Dennis, none of this would have happened without Jim Guercio. As I like to say he made it happen then and he made it happen again now. Jim really believed in Dennis as a talent in his own right outside of the shadow of his brothers and the Beach Boys. At a time when it probably seemed like a dumb idea to give a boatload of your own money to Dennis Wilson to make a record, he did and it ended up being better than even the most loyal fan could have ever imagined.
When we first spoke over a year ago Jim put together a team (Don Williams, John Hanlon and Gregg Jakobson) to work with us to ensure that this time a reissue of POB became a reality. There are many more folks to thank, all mentioned in the CD, but As Dennis said in the notes to his own album… Thank You Jimmy G.

This sounds weird.  I'm assuming Mr. Hawkins is the dud from the Foo Fighters.  What does the drummer for the frickin' Foo Fighters have to do w/ Dennis?

Yeah that made me curious too. Strange... spose we'll have to wait and hear what it's all about.

That's the best BB news I've heard in a long time. I'm so excited to hear it all, especially Only With You. Love Carl singing it but I always love hearing Dennis singing songs he wrote (and any other song for that matter). I wish they would release all the versions of every BB song thats been recorded with various leads (like Dennis and Carl's leads on Sail On Sailor). The originals are fantastic but it's always great to hear someone else give it a whole new meaning, and have more music to love. Anyway all the people that are making this record happen...again.... really are great  for giving us all this music. I'm counting down the days til POB is rereleased ;D

My wife about sh*t when I told her that Taylor's got a song on there. 1). Dennis is her favorite Beach Boy, and 2) She's a big Foo Fighters fan.

This is great news!! As I said before I'll be getting 2 copies. This deserves it.

The boots aren't even close to what you'll hear on this package. Imagine hearing the orig. multi-tracks, which I did, and like you being somewhat numbed by years of the boots when engineer John Hanlon brings up a certain familiar track...and then as he pulls up the individual faders you realize that when whomever did the rough mixes that are on those boots, they didn't have all of the tracks up, you know like you heard a 16 track version of a song that has 24 of them...oh wow, there's strings on this? Oh man, there's another guitar and a harmonica on that? woodwinds too? Oh wow Carl's voice is in that part too? I spent a couple of months being reminded daily that the boots we all heard were only partial mixes. This will be like hearing it for the first time, except without the tape hiss, without the generation loss, and with all the elements of the arrangement/production utilized. And added to that are 10 or 12 things that were never booted.

Amazing.

Hey Jon, was there ever any discussion about attempting to remix any of POB?  As an experiment?  Or ever any discussion about doing "track only" or "vocal only" mixes?  Or are those being saved for the Career retrospective?  ;)

This will be one of the best albums ever put out concerning the group. I am very happy.

I think Jim Guercio was interested in a remix of River Song, but the multi-track is missing. I believe there's a second POB track (Moonshine?)with a missing master...but yeah there was some discussion. It was decided that this would be the DW approved POB mix in a newly mastered form with a second disc showing the best of the unreleased Caribou stuff with release quality mixes. There is plenty of material for another project, and yeah perhaps with more of a sessions and alternate kind of vibe. That could happen.

Moonshine's multi should be OK, I remember seeing a reference to it, although it was named "Beautiful Play" at that point.  I also recall seeing a completely alternate version of Moonshine referenced, with different instrumentation and everything.

Interesting you should mention that song because that's sort of what I had in mind...the track and vocals are so interesting that i would like to hear them isolated.  Anything highlighting that Brother Studios room sound on the drums, which that song has in spades, is cool.

Is it just me or is Baby Blue missing?

Jon if a follow up does happen, I hope the rockabilly version of "What's Wrong " is included. That sounds terrific. Will there be recording dates on all of the songs that are included?

I was just wondering why Taylor Hawkins is credited with co-writing "Holy Man"? I mean did he contribute a whole other verse of lyrics or what? I just figured that the lyrics would've already been figured out? Perhaps not... :-\ ???

I didn't want to read every sentence in an interview with a guy I don't care about, but my computer's search function only yielded one hit for "Dennis", "Wilson", and "Pacific Ocean Blue", and it's just him saying that he likes the album. Why is he on one of the songs?

I believe he was/is going steady with Jakobson's daughter iirc. Don't know why he's on POB-deluxe but it might be interesting for non-DW-fans, so they are gonna buy it...

You should've just searched for "Dennis Wilson" within the article...he praises Dennis' work with the Beach Boys too:  "Friends", "Surf's Up" (obviously he meant "Sunflower") and "20/20", as well as other early '70s singer/songwriter stuff like Fleetwood Mac's mellow stuff from that era.  I saw the Foos a couple of weeks ago and Taylor sang lead on a song.  Nice mellow voice singing an upbeat pop song while he played the drums.  Which still doesn't answer your question as to why he's on the album...but if you tie his praise of Dennis' work in with what was just said about the Jakobson connection, you should have your answer.

Wow, now I finally know how it feels to be a Pointer Sister: "I'm So Excited" (and I just can't hide it!!!).

Excellent news - 33 tracks, two more than Jon even promised (under promise, over deliver - way to go!).

I have to assume that since "Holy Man" is listed as instrumental-only on the first disc that no Dennis-vocal exists for it. If Rocker is correct and Taylor Hawkins has a connection to Gregg Jakobson, then I imagine he was brought in to write new (additional?) lyrics for the song and provide the lead vocal that Dennis never recorded.

That's right...he helped Gregg finish the newly written lyrics...it was purely an experiment that Jimmy, John and Gregg wanted to try and it worked well enough that they thought people might like to hear Holy Man with a vocal and melody. And if they want the pure DW version its on the first disc. BTW...the last track...bonus Holy Man is the ONLY track on the entire package that has anything added to it that wasn't recorded when Dennis was around. The other 32 tracks are pure DW from the '75 - '79 period.

Oh...and someone mentioned Baby Blue...yes its not there. There was a problem with the Bambu version, no DW vocal on it. His vocal was on the BB's version only I believe. There was a legal issue involved with using any elements of the BB's version, similar issues with Love Surrounds Me but that got worked out to everyone's satisfaction. Time constraints became an issue before the Baby Blue situation was worked out, and there was no shortage of material without it...so it was left out. It may see release in the future once things get ironed out. In the meantime fuse your L.A. Light version onto the Bambu lineup if you can't live without it.

Jon, just curious: the rough mix of River Song with a younger Dennis vox - does it exist on multi-track, or is the version floating around the only mix / remnant of the song we have?

Well we can't have a Beach Boys release without some legal issues..! No worries though, its exciting to get to hear a stash of unreleased songs!! Congratulations to all involved!! :)
