It's from the 10th anniversary issue of Rolling Stone from 1977. Back when they were more about music. Everyone looked more polished on the photo used for the 1971 Rolling Stone cover.

Brian looks sad....like Al just snorted the last of his nose candy..........

Well it IS one photo where Brian doesn't look like the Beach Boy who is most stoned.

I've read somewhere that some people thought that Brian had been "added" to the picture after the shot... I guess this one puts that theory to rest! Great pic, thanks!  :)

Looks like Brian is in the same get-up as the pick of him at the Radiant Radish.

You're right about Brian looking similar to the way he did in the Radiant Radish shot-mainly because that shot was also taken for the 1971 Rolling Stone.  A lot of writers have stated that the Radish closed in July 1970 but actually it was still open in 1971.  The error started because a Rolling Stone article in 1970 stated that Brian closed the Radish for the day and went over to tape a radio interview.  He did indeed close the Radish for the day but not for good.  It was still open in June 1971 when the RS piece was being written and he posed for a photo there.

Guilty as charged.  :ahh

It's amazing when you go back to the original source (in this case the 1970 Rolling Stone) how much better the info you get. That is why Andrerw and Ian's site is so good.

eprWerner Electra Atlantic in 1971 put out a promotional set of their artists. I got a set from a local DJ. They feature the Boys(reprise) in a different take of this shot, T-Rex, Grateful Dead, Jimi, Lightfoot, Joni, James Taylor, Frank Zappa, Neil Young and Van Morrison. The boys look less spaced than the one here-they adorn my lower level (man cave) walls-They are 3'X4' in size.

I was manager of the old Record Factory store in San Jose, Ca in the 70's and I was lucky enough to score one of those sets too! My fave was the BB's but the Van Morrison one was cool and the Neil Young was a classic.

Let's see... Mike looks like someone slipped laxatives into his coffee, Brian looks like someone pissed in his cornflakes, Carl looks like Elton John gave him fashion tips, Al looks like a child molester, Dennis has this big, stoned, soapy grin on his face, as if someone was giving him sucky sucky invisibly, and Bruce really needs to shave that mustache - reminds me of my 7-11 deskguy.

It looks more like a "State of The Beach Boys, circa 1971" picture. Except for Carl, they all look like they had one toke too many. I have a 8x10 glossy of this pic that I believe I purchased at the Spring 1972 show in Philly. I say believe, because I had one too many tokes that evening, as well.

Have to say, Alan looks totally hammered, and even Bruce is looking... mellow.  :brian
