Title: Recording Studios ...
Post by: Malc on January 30, 2008, 01:24:32 PM
Can anyone please come up with the actual addresses/locations for any of the studios the group used over the years. I know where Wally Heider's was, and United Western and the Capitol Tower ... but exactly WHERE on Melrose was the Morgan's studio, and what about Gold Star or World Pacific ? And did they actually use Harmony Recorders during early '62 ? If so, where is/was it ? Thanks folks ...

Gold Star Studios was located at 6252 Santa Monica Boulevard near the intersection with Vine Street. It closed in 1984.

I'm pretty sure World Pacific was located at 8715 West Third Street.

A. In the heart of Hollywood near the intersection of Vine Street and Santa Monica Boulevard.

The locations of the studios are listed in Domenic Priore's book about Sunset Strip, which is well worth getting hold of..

Last I knew, the studio is still there but is now Ocean Way Studio.  BTW, if my memory serves, Ocean Way was the studio the Boys were recording at in 1995 with Brian and Was when Cindy Lee Berryhill walked in...

Between 1999 and 2006 Ocean Way (old Western Studios) was known as Cello. It is now called Eastwest.

Oceanway used to comprise 6050 Sunset- the old United Studios and 6000 Sunset- the old Western Recorders. The Beach Boys did almost no recording at United in the 60's and the 95 session was also at Western. Western Studio 3 was where most Beach Boys sessions were cut although they occasionally used Studio 2 (the Party album was cut there)

Brian's xmas album and several other smaller projects have been recorded in Oceanway (United's)  Studio B.

The old World Pacific Studios has been owned by Neil Diamond for many years, and was where we recorded Brian's vocals for "Delirious Love" on Neil's last album.

Oh and Sunset Sound is at 6650 Sunset........and the old Radio Recorders (Help Me Rhonda, Dance Dance Dance and other tracks) is at the corner of Orange and Santa Monica although unlike the others it in no way resembles the original studios.

Here's a couple pictures of the old Western Recorders building that I took when I was there in 2006 (gosh, I sure am lucky that I live in California!)

And the side of the building:

And here's a studio beind the building that says "Sunset Gower Studios" on the front... I took a picture of it, but I don't think its THE Sunset studios, as its actually on a back neighborhood street, not on Sunset.

What ever became of Al's studio/barn? Does it still exist?
Does anyone have any good pics of it (inside/out)

Also, what about the studio where Holland was recorded?
Is there a landmark there showing where it's at?

Also Also, what about the studio where MIU was recorded? Does it exist still?

Would love to see pics of any of these studios, inside and outside

The Baambrugge Studio was torn down decades ago. I think that some pictures are shown in the Dutch "The Beach Boys in the Polder" documentary (on the recording of the Holland album) of a few years back. Don't know the exact location, but I think it could be (roughly) traced back.

No - because it wasn't a real studio. The band set up a makeshift studio in a basement at MIU in Fairfield, Iowa.
