Title: Christopher Cross taking Carl's leads in a reunion?
Post by: GoogaMooga on January 20, 2008, 05:24:39 AM
If there were ever to be a full BB reunion with tour and album, I'd want Christopher Cross to take Carl's leads. His voice most closely resembles Carl's tenor.

The line-up:

Brian Wilson
Mike Love
Al Jardine
Bruce Johnston
David Marks
Blondie Chaplin
Ricky Fataar
Christopher Cross

and Brian's current band

But Christopher Cross was never a Beach Boy....There are enough "former" Beach Boys that Christopher Cross wouldn't be necessary. Split Carl's leads among Brian, Al, and maybe Bruce.

I agree on Brian's backing band for support, but it would be more emotional/sentimental with guys like Blondie Chaplin & Ricky Fataar, Ed Carter & Billy Hinsche, Charles Lloyd & James Guercio >:D

I'm sorry but I just can't see Blondie and Rickie having anything to do with any potential Beach Boys project, even a one off. They were Beach Boys for  a few years and yes made some good contributions, but their music was so different before they were BB and since, it is still different. Both have moved very far from the BB and other than Rickie sitting in a few times for a song with Brian and Brian and Al last year, none of them has made a move to be associated with the band in 35 years. I can't see that changing

I (barely) respectfully refrain from this thread on the grounds that the premise itself--a reunion--makes me feel very sick to my stomach. This is most certainly true. Forever and ever, amen. Fin.

Carry on.

I've never heard Christopher Cross, but I'd rather some more associated with the Beach Boys be his replacement. Christian Love and Jeff Foskett, et cetera, have been great at singing his parts in concert, and they both have a higher claim to the Beach Boys that whoever this Christopher Cross character is (is that his real name? Chris Cross? how cheesey).

Wow, you've never heard Christopher Cross?  You're probably too young (not hard, considering he's from the early '80s), and lucky enough never to catch "Arthur" in TV reruns.  For the record, Chris Cross hits include "Ride Like the Wind," "Sailing," and the theme from "Arthur."  He has a high voice, but it's not the quality of Carl's. If I was going to pick a non-Beach Boy for a so-so high voice, why not Henry Gross?  At least he once did a song about Carl's dog.  I don't know what he's up to these days.  Or maybe get Randy Meisner, if he can still sing half as well as he did as an Eagle (and I don't know if he can).  Then, you might have a bonafide supergroup.

If you have the Imagination DVD, you can see him there. He is a part of the "concert."

even if Cross was going to "replace" Carl..... then I can't help but wondering who's gonna replace Dennis?

What's this "supergroup" talk? The Beach Boys - Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, and David - ARE the supergroup!

If you're looking for a replacement for Dennis, why not choose somebody who DID replace him? Ricky Fataar or Bobby Figueroa? Or Hal Blaine! :police:

Exactly!

And please, nobody mention Phil Collins here.  :lol

If it's a one-off concert PBS special deal like Bruce was talking about, I don't see the problem in Ricky and Blondie being there, for one night. Hell, bring in Glen Campbell, too.

Potential drummers:
Ricky Fataar
Bobby Figueroa
Mike Kowalski
John Cowsill (technically the official drummer of the Beach Boys currently...)
John Stamos
Hal Blaine

I'd prefer the sidemen to be from some actual incarnation of the Beach Boys as opposed to getting random other celebrities. Al's band plus Foskett would be ideal. Ed Carter, Billy Hinsche, et cetera.

(edit: I see Sheriff John Stone beat me to the punch about the drummer talk)

The Beach Boys - Brian, Mike, Al, Bruce, and David

The Band:
Ricky Fataar - drums
Blondie Chaplin - guitar
Jeff Foskett - guitar
Ed Carter - bass
Billy Hinsche - keyboards
Bobby Figueroa - percussion

Guest musicians (for "featured" songs):

Glen Campbell - guitar
Daryl Dragon - keyboards
Charles Lloyd - horns, flute
The Honeys - vocals

You have to find a spot for Mike Kowalski, Adrian Baker, and Richie Cannata. Where's Carli Munoz and Elmo Peeler? If you include Matt Jardine you open up a whole can of worms with The Beach Boys' kids. See, the problems are starting already! :police:

Why do the "Reunion" threads always last for at least five pages? They are the "who killed Smile" of 2008...  :lol

Because some people want a Beach Boys Happy History Tour reunion based on sidemen, some want the same, but including sidemen of one era or another (i.e., not using more current sidemen), some want a Brian-centric reunion and some (smart ones!) don't want a reunion at all. These threads open up the place to re-argue everyone's positions...

I would add that not only do people want their Happy Ending (as if a reunited BB  would actually MEAN anything), they feel the need to demonize anyone that they feel stops them from getting their Happy Ending.

Hey Rob, you sure know one or two things about demonizing, don't you?   ;D

I think that a permanent reunion would be next to impossible. But I could almost conceive a one night stand renunion special on tv or something. Still hard to imagine, but hey, who could've imagined Brian doing Smile live 10 years ago? Nobody!!

If an outsider were to take Carl's place, I would choose the lead singer of Chicago (I don't know his name off hand). But I agree that it should be all insiders.

When the Reunion-theme was really hot in '06 Justyn Wilson and Carl B. Wilson said that they liked to fill in for their fathers.
I think Matt Jardine should be tehre. He's the best falsetto since Brian, and sometimes I like his even more...

...as it was going to happen... :-X

The lead singer for Chicago was Peter Cetera. Carl's unique emotional voice is hard to copy. I have heard Mike Love's son sound similar on a song from the new unreleased Mike Love album. It shook me for a moment.

The premise of a reunion is strictly specualtive. And probably a lot of wishful thinking. I don't need to elaborate on the "why it won't work" thing. It has been  :deadhorse We'll just havce to wait and see. But, I do notice that both Brian's band and the Mike and bruce show are in the UK at the same time. Hmmm.

But those guys don't exactly have Carl's pipes...

The truth is it is very doubtful that a reunion with the surviving members would really be worthwhile.  Something about having a bunch of old guys in their 60's get up on stage and pretend that they like each other long enough to croak out "Fun Fun Fun" isn't very appealing to me...
