Title: Who was the band on Brian's album Imagination?
Post by: DonnaK on January 12, 2008, 08:13:22 AM
I've tried AGD's site and can't find anything about who the band was. The Wondermints? Since he was living in St. Charles Illinois at the time, and he had a studio in his home, was it recorded there or in California? Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me nuts!

Thanks,
Donna

The album was cut in a variety of locales including the house in St.Charles, Nashville, LA and Key West, Florida.  Musicians included Brent Rowan,Eddie Bayers, Mike Rhodes (the Nashville studio cats that played on S & S),Joe Thomas, Greg Leisz, Jackie Bertoni. Curiously enough the only membersof the current band who played on the album were Paul Mertens, Bob Lizik,Scott Bennett and (I think)Jim Hines. Wondermints and Foskett weren't brought into the scene until well after the album was released.

Not Hines, but his predecessor, Todd Suchermann.
Donna, if you have the CD, you should have the credits in the booklet...

Thank you all so much. I don't have the booklet anymore, wish I did, it would've saved me a few brain cells!!!

I just love that album and constantly play it in the car!

Paul Mertens used to be with the Chicago based Poi Dog Pondering, right? Is that why the Chicago connection while he was living here?

Mertens, Lizik and Bennett all are or were Chicago-based (as is, I think, Jim Hines, the current drummer). So presumably their availability to record at Brian's IL studio helped them get the gig. (The album was also recorded in Hollywood, Nashville and Key West (Fla.) (Buffett, I suppose).

Oddly enough, the booklet neglects to credit the rhythm section in "South American."

You are correct Luther. Jim Hines is a Chicago guy too.

The very first live Brian show in St. Charles IL featured Bruce Johnston, Timothy Schmit, and IIRC Christopher Cross. The rest of the band was Joe Thomas, Jim Peterik, some guys from Peterik's long time Chicago band "The Ides Of March", and Paul Mertens. Chicago radio guy Steve Dahl was also involved, as were a couple others I can't recall.

It was after the St. Charles show and after Imagination that the present band began to take shape. Scott Bennett, Bob Lizik, Todd Sucherman (who had to bow out and was replaced by Jim Hines), Paul Mertens, and Taylor were the "Chicago Contingent"; they were joined by Jeffrey and the 'Mints, including "auxiliary 'Mint" Probyn Gregory.

What a band!!

Todd left to play with..Styx

And his Mom told me it really broke his heart to leave Brian's band, but Styx were his "home boys", so he felt he must out of loyalty.  She said he recommended Jimmy Hines to take over for him.

And of course, he married Taylor, so that worked out.

Plus, Brian liked him (Todd) enough to have him play drums on the GIOMH album, even though it was recorded after Jim Hines joined the touring group.
