Title: Happy Days- Other song incorporations besides MySolution
Post by: punkinhead on December 19, 2007, 10:29:51 PM
I was reading in Phillip Lambert's BW book that Happy Days not only has My Solution, but fragments of: Johnny Carson, Sweet Mountain, and Winter Symphony...Does anyone know where these pop up in the song?

I really can't help with the answer to your question, but I've always thought that the "Happy days are here again, the sky is blue and clear again" part is pretty much a note for note copy of the verses of "All This Is That".

That isn't what he's saying, if you're referring to Chapter 14, Love and Mercy, The Brian Era (pg 326 in my paperback edition). The paragraph is mostly about "Cry," and discusses how unusual it is for Brian to write in a minor key. The sentence is:

"After that are smaller splashes of minor keys, like in the material from "Night Bloomin' Jasmine" (1982) that he used in "Rio Grande" (1988), and in the ideas from "My Solution" (1970) that were recycled in "Happy Days" (1997-98), plus portions of songs such as "Sweet Mountain" (1972), "Winter Symphony" (1975-76) and "Johnny Carson" (1976).

What he is saying is that those songs all included segments in minor keys. Think of that convoluted sentence like this:

He used splashes of minor keys in:
- Night Bloomin Jasmine part of Rio Grande
- My Solution part of Happy Days
- Sweet Mountain
- Winter Symphony
- Johnny Carson

He isn't saying that those last three songs are incorporated into "Happy Days."
