They were all playing this song in their office and laughing their heads off. Apparently the idea to actually write about it on the site got pulled by the editor though.
What a terrible mistake that song was (and still is). Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Lola Jane on December 02, 2007, 02:17:35 PM This really sounds like some sort of promo. You've got to hand it to Brian, he has one helluva sense of humour, I quite like the tongue in cheek. Possibly I'm the only one here...
"Women doctors, and lawyers too - can really make a man out of you." ;D Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Pretty Funky on December 02, 2007, 04:54:50 PM This is just the type of crazy tune that would probably do well as a novelty tune given Brians past.

Doe on December 03, 2007, 01:11:07 AM "And some guys dig the ugly types"
I've always heard this as "dig blonde archetypes". Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: SloopJohnB on December 03, 2007, 01:18:41 AM "And some guys dig the ugly types" I've always heard this as "dig blonde archetypes". Me too. And I think it somehow makes more sense. ;D Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Andrew G. Doe on December 03, 2007, 03:35:44 AM That's the first time I've listened to that track for maybe ten years.
And now I recall why. :o Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: mikeyj on December 03, 2007, 03:53:40 AM What a terrible mistake that song was (and still is). I wouldn't really call it a mistake as such. I mean it never was released officially and really should never have been heard by any of us fans. Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: smile-holland on December 03, 2007, 04:28:30 AM I still wonder whether Brian was blood serious when he wrote (or was told to write) this song, or if this is a huge joke of him ridiculing those typical Mike Love lyrics. Because if the latter, he definitely succeeded. ;D Compare these lyrics with for instance "Summer Of Love"... (or any other SIP-lyric from dr. Love). I can't imagine Mike making a joke of his own lyrics.
Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Alex on December 03, 2007, 09:01:10 AM Is the rest of Sweet Insanity as bad/so-horrible its funny as Smart Girls?
Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Roger Ryan on December 03, 2007, 09:05:54 AM You could almost imagine someone like Randy Newman doing this song and have it praised as a great put-on. I'm glad it stayed unreleased (sort-of), but I never thought it was that atrocious. In fact, I think the track features one of Brian's most energetic lead vocals.
The best of "Sweet Insanity" was redone for GIOMH, but there are still a couple of good songs like "Somebody To Love" and "Water Builds Up" that haven't come out but would hold their own with Wilson's released canon. Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Swamp Pirate on December 03, 2007, 11:28:34 AM Even though, I'm pretty sure Smart Girls wasn't written/recorded as a parody song, it works wonderfully as one.
Can you imagine just how funny a video for this could be if done right? Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Pretty Funky on December 03, 2007, 07:21:48 PM News - Music, movie, Entertainment
WILSON'S LOST RAP SONG RELEASED ONLINE Movie & Entertainment News provided by World Entertainment News Network (www.wenn.com) 2007-12-03 23:18:31 - A rap song THE BEACH BOYS star BRIAN WILSON recorded as a limited edition gift giveaway to fans and friends is causing a stir in cyberspace after a copy of the 1989 cassette single was unearthed. Fans can now download Smart Girls, which Wilson recorded with his psychotherapist Eugene Landy, at radio station WFMU's Beware Of The Blog website. Only 250 cassette versions of the tune, which features samples of famous Beach Boys riffs, were cut. The Smart Girls recording has remained a musical myth since the early 1990s when Wilson played the song while he was a guest on Dr. Demento's Los Angeles radio show. Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Beach Boy on December 03, 2007, 09:36:35 PM That's the first time I've listened to that track for maybe ten years. And now I recall why. :o ;D I don't know if I hate or love this song. ??? I mean it's fun listen to but very embarrassing too. I bet if it was from Mike everyone would hate it. Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Aegir on December 03, 2007, 09:49:21 PM That's because Mike has no history of mental illness and if he wrote a song like "Smart Girls" it would be completely on purpose.
Title: Re: Blogs on Post by: mikeyj on December 03, 2007, 10:26:21 PM I bet if it was from Mike everyone would hate it. Well don't most people hate this song anyway? It's nothing really to do with it being Brian so therefore everyone loves it. And this (whether it is meant to be or not) totally sounds like a parody (as people have already mentioned), whereas Summer of Love etc.. are supposed to be serious!! Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Wilsonista on December 04, 2007, 07:01:25 PM Is the rest of Sweet Insanity as bad/so-horrible its funny as Smart Girls? There are some great songs on SI like Someone To Love, Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel, Rainbow Eyes, and Do You Have Any Regrets (the last one with an HORRIBLE arrangement - Darian Sahanaja's version is far superior to Brian's IMO). But there is some gawdawful, cringe-inducing dreck. Hotter comes to mind. Make A Wish does too. ut Smart Girls' awfulness is a beast unto itelf! Battle Hymn might actually be a funnier musical joke. Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: the captain on December 04, 2007, 07:06:23 PM I still stand behind Smart Girls as an intentionally humorous song. It is better than a good deal of the sh*t on SI. There isn't a single "great" song, but several are ok. The production throughout causes violent vomiting.
Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Dancing Bear on December 05, 2007, 05:46:46 AM Some years ago one of the keyboard players for the "Brian Wilson" solo album posted here that Brian would offer atrocious material on purpose, just to see how far he could go with that. Maybe this is one of his put ons that went too far.
Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Aegir on December 05, 2007, 03:33:17 PM Really? Wow. I now understand why I dislike some of Brian's music. It's supposed to be terrible! Oh, that Brian Wilson.
Title: Re: Blogs on \ Post by: Wilsonista on December 05, 2007, 03:44:04 PM I believe the guy's name was Michael Bernard - that's him with Brian performing Love and Mercy and In My Car on the Endless Summer series. He used to take part in chat session at cab.com. I loved storeis like that because, to me it was the ultimate middle finger to Landy.
