Title: Big Bag of Vegetables 9-disk set???
Post by: onkster on November 30, 2007, 03:04:24 PM
Anybody heard of this?  Supposed a 9-disk set of SMILE stuff called "A Big Bag of Vegetables"...download-only, so I hear, don't know from where though.

Does anyone have this, and if so, is there anything "new" to our ears on it?

Thanks in advance!

I've never heard of it. The closest things to this I've heard of are UM 17, a 5 disc set, and ProjectSMiLE, a CD-ROM/torrent download that has tracks compiled from many different bootlegs, and has tons of writings on smile, and a session timeline with info on who played on what session, etc.
PM me if you want the project smile site.

BTW, I hope this isn't just a new rumor/hoax, like "Remember the Zoo" was.

I recieved this from a friend a month ago.Very much like the SOT discs, but more material!Nothing earth shaking, however for the collector essential.

There is another set which is called the Complete Smile Sessions which includes color session photos and a nicely sequenced set of 12 discs with audio quality as good as could be located. Again no surprises, but a collector's essential. In many cases speed correction has been made, and the whole thing follows a linear flow which has not been seen since SOT. Extremely hard to find.

I received something similar to this, but it was 12 discs.

It had all the sessions from the Smile era. Very similar to the SOTs and Project Smile, but had some pictures and stuff.

Would it be o.k. to post artwork and track list?
Or is that against forum rules?

I was told about "Big Bag..." a few years back by a serious BBs collector, after a BW SMiLE gig in Londres.   He told me that it was put together and circulated privately by a bunch of hardcore fans who each had different material in their collections, to gather it all in one place and share among each other.

I haven't got a copy and I haven't heard it... but I'd love to get me 'ands on the stuff that must be therein.

Haven't heard of the 12-disc set but it seems a logical evolution of "Big Bag..." I guess.

If posting a tracklist is out of order I guess PM-ing wouldn't be!

There exist three Beach Boys bootlegs which gather up the materials on Big Bag Of Vegetables that are not circulating on other bootlegs - these bootlegs circulated far and wide, and got the creators a nice cease and desist order tossed at them by the PTB.

Said bootlegs are "Heroes and Villains Sessions Part II", "Secret Smile" and "Psychedelic Sounds".

The first is just an hour of Heroes sessions (obviously). The second is two CDs with a grab bag of material. The third is a two-disc compilation of all spoken word recordings made during the Smile sessions, the entire first disc was on Big Bag Of Vegetables - it was the legendary "Psychedelic Sounds" party reel (coincidentally, three recordings on the second disc of this bootleg were traded among the truly hardcore, they were the famous "taxi cab recordings", the "basketball game recording" and "Bob Gordon's Real Trip").

By and large 99.5% of the material mentioned in this thread and in my post is on the Project Smile CD-ROM set. One exception - on Big Bag Of Vegetables there is an excerpt of a Mrs. O'Leary's Cow session, featuring takes 6-10. Take 6 is part of SOT 17, but takes 7-10 are unheard previously. Must have been an oversight on the part of the compilers of Project Smile. As far as it's known, it's the only unbooted circulating Smile session.

Thanks for that information, Jason.

Reading the rules/guidelines and specifically (2), I'd conclude that sharing information on tracklists can be seen as "talking about bootlegs", which is OK. Just beware for bootleg-requests or offers...

..a trusted source shared this in another forum:

"..it was a 9CD set expanded to 10CD's, i'd
say approx 40-50% is available on other bootlegs, maybe less. A 12CD
set is rumour, if 2 more CD's have been added, it did'nt come from
the same source(s) as the original 10CD set..."

BBoV with 50 to 60% of SMiLE material which has never been released, either legally or boot, would be a goldmine--but apparently it is still only available to the higher level of collectors...

Besides Secret Smile and Psychedelic sounds there was a "Sea of Tunes source tape" bootleg which apparently duplicated a disc of BBOV and included the extra Fire outtakes and several false starts/pretake chatter/take slates not on the Sea of Tunes discs.

Interesting. Never heard of the set but I've heard of the three that Jason talked about.

Secret Smile is probably the best one. Highlights of it include three "Tones" sessions, the backing track to the Harpsichord version of Wonderful, and a stereo version of I Love to Say Da-Da. The last two are in poor quality though.

I do know about SS, PS and the SOT Source.  I was really excited about the Tones tracks when I first heard Secret Smile.

I am hoping to see a track list from BBOV when our friend can break away from some personal business and post it.  The statement that about half the material  having  never been released blew me away.

It may be a tired old subject, but it causes one to wonder if the rumored Durrie Parks acetates were finally copied...

What's rumored to be on those acetates anyway?

One gets the impression that they are like the Holy Grail. Something to dream of and quest for yet never really know if they exist or existed.

Perhaps one of the high-level BB experts can fill in those gaps.  But any new thing from SMiLE which hadn't been released yet causes me to wonder if that wasn't one of the sources...

Well, the holy grail notion comes from the fact that Brian apparently gave his friends and collaborators working acetates around Christmas 1966. That Durrie Parks might have what was given to Van Dyke makes it so alluring, as he, of all people, would have likely had the most complete version of the material as it stood up to December 1966. The hope being that maybe some vocals for "CITFOTM," the verses of "DYLW" and perhaps a "Barnyard"/"Great Shape" mix of "H&V." But that's all wishful thinking, at this point. Though one that is very much in the realm of possibility.

The only other major things missing, were that to be the case, would be the middle section of "SU," recorded (possibly) in january 1967, and then the other "Elements," whatever they may have been. Regardless, the former Mrs. Van Dyke Parks is holding something that should not be tossed aside as irrelevant, nor sitting around waiting for time to do its natural wear & tear.

Looks like a nice complete collection of smile sessions. Any idea about what of this stuff is totally unheard?
Any revelatory or interesting sounds?

I guess the nice thing is that the tracks are ordered properly and in some semblance of chronological order (at least under the song title).  It is also nice to hear complete sessions, and hearing material that has been substantially cleaned up. There is nothing really revolutionary except to hear it in its development stage allows you to appreciate how much work went into it.

I guess that the bottom of the barrel has been scraped. Mike Love once explained the lack of an official Beach Boys "Smile" compilation by saying "You've got it all already". Perhaps we do. There's still the hope that Capitol or Brother may uncover some previously unheard material from tapes that were misplaced, misfiled, stolen or weren't retrieved from studios or labels or individuals who owned those studios.

Plus, there's got to be better quality versions of some of what we have, like the two tracks I talked about before (Da-Da stereo version and the track to the harpischord version Wonderful.)

All that's left mainly are vocal sessions that we know were recorded, but they might be lost/erased, and only Brian knows what happened to them, if he does. He might say he doesn't when he really does.

Like the tapes with the vocals for "Look" which went missing?

I highly doubt any vocals were recorded for the verses of DYLW.

I'm 50-50% on that one. No one has come up with corresponding AFM-Sheet/tapebox evidence to say whether or not there was a session for those vocals. No evidence outside of the lyric sheet given to Frank Holmes in 1966.

But there were vocal sessions for "CIFOTM" and "Part 2" sessions for "Surf's Up."

Yeah but are we talking about the chorus vocals for Child (which we have) or are we talking about vocals on the verses?

Also, are we sure that there's part 2 sessions for Surf's Up?

The January sessions for "Surf's Up" were labeled as tracking for Part 2.

Apparently there are some verse vocals for "CITFOTM" that can barely be heard bleeding through a recorded playback. That being said, there were enough sessions for "CITFOTM" to hypothetsize that there likely were vocal sessions for the verses. But it's just a guess.

Interesting on the CITFOTM info.

I thought that the sessions for Surf's Up in January 67 were for the first part. Is it possible the first movement was started in December of 66?

I don't have LLVS in front of me right now, so I don't really remember. For some reason, it's sticking out in my mind that the first section of "Surf's Up," plus the "Talking French Horns" overdubs, were all recorded in November 1966.

I believe Brad Elliott lays it all out in detail in LLVS.

Surf's Up part one tracking was Nov 4, 66 with brass overdubs Nov 7th (George Fell was taped at that session).

Part Two tracking was Jan 23, 1967.

Two vocal sessions were held for Worms, Oct 18 and Dec 21st, the first Brian only (the Hawaiian tag?), the second the full group.

I thought the bleed through vocals heard when Darian and Brian reviewed tapes for BWPS were on the chorus, not the verses.

You might be right about that. But then that wouldn't be anything we haven't already heard, so I'm not sure why chorus bleed would really matter. Maybe that was us otakus hoping there was more.

Mike really said that?
It doesn't surprise me. I remember reading an interview where the interviewer mentioned owning a BB bootleg, and Mike's response was "You ass-hole, give me 20 dollars!"

EDIT: Here it is verbatim...  (bold is interviewer)

Now the million dollar question: Will Smile ever be released?

There was brilliant pieces of music but it's disjointed and fragmented and unfinished so I don't see any real venue for doing it. I don't see any real reason for it to come out other than certain collectors would like to hear some of those unfinished tapes. They probably have them anyway (uproarious laughter).

I'm not saying anything.

You lousy bastard, that'll be 20 dollars (laughs).

We've been on that trail forever.

Back in 2003, Malcolm Leo told me that he had a copy of the full "Surf's Up" track in his archive, and I about crapped my pants. But when pushed further, he clarified that it wasn't the "SU" backing track, nor anything from the studio. What he meant was the video of Brian performing the song in his living room, without the "Inside Pop" narration. Hence the "full track."

Alas, "Part 2" remains unfound. I think Alan Boyd reported a few years back that there was a tape box for that session, but it was empty. I don't want to get all mysterious sounding here. I tend to speak in grail connotations and really shouldn't. For all we know, the tape was damaged, misplaced or just never turned out. After all, Carl Wilson, Jack Rieley and Stephen Desper never came across that section back in 1971. Not sure if anyone has anything further or not.

So...has anybody recently compiled the ultimate SMiLE discography yet?

By that, I mean a list that compiles the complete original sessions and tracks, in the best quality possible.  And with as little redundancy as possible.  And not counting fan mixes, etc.

(Mainly...I'm trying to find out if there's anything I'm still missing!  I think I have everything as of yesterday, having downloaded the SOT Source Tape boot, although the quality isn't fantastic...)

Alan has said here that there are several empty Smile era tape boxes but I'm almost positive he didn't specifically mention Surf's Up 'part 2'.

Others can provide more details but some of the experts are of the opinon that 'part 2' may have not been recorded.

Does anyone know if group vocals were ever added to part 1 in '66/'67?

While there likely isn't much Smile stuff in the Brother vaults that hasn't been booted (save for Jazz, more Great Shape instro takes, etc) much of what we know exists will present substantial sonic upgrades over what circulates. Some of the stuff we have sounds awful (CITFORM for instance). The stuff we do have from acetate sounds really poor. I'm sure the extant acetates or best tape copies of the acetates will sound better than. let's say, the version of Old Master Painter with vocals that circulates.

It is almost certain that there are acetates in existence that contain material that has not been booted. Alan Boyd has said that here. What is interesting is that with all of the Smile stuff that has been booted we only have a handful of vintage BW mixes. The Smile sessions lasted 8-9 months. We know that during that span BW had to have done tons of rough mixes and test edits. Where is all that stuff?

A BBs fan of some great repute once told me that many of the tapes still existing had been cut. I think he was referring to final  -  ie, definitive - takes on many of the songs having been spliced off the ends of the reels. Aka stolen.
My understanding of the processes isn't that hot but maybe he would care to embelish my memory -  it was a casual conversatoon at a BW Smile gig in '04, Birmingham I think - as I know he posts here.

Talking about the instrumental sessions, I would guess about 70% in the Brother vaults isn't booted. There are samples around of probably every recorded SMiLE fragment, but the sessions on the boots are for the most part very incomplete, if not all of them. As mentioned, final takes are missing or there's only the talking between takes.

..Secret SMiLe, Psychadelic Sounds and Sessions Tape make a great addition any collection, but that still doesn't  account for about 50% of a 9 cd or so box set having never been booted on a large scale and only known to a very few insider collectors.

When my friend becomes "board active" again,  he'll publish a promised track list for BBOV.

So this tells me that somebody came up with tape or acetate sources (that's why I was guessing Durrie Parks) that have not seen the light of day until recently.

It gets more interesting all the time...

On the official Beach Boys box set that had the five or six 'SMiLE' releases on it, does anybody recall where the middle section of DYLW came from? It's where the 'Bicycle Rider' section would have gone, except this  section sounds slightly warped (I think it sounds almost like a mellotron with Brian chanting over it-'oom dada'). I seem to recall someone saying it came from a box that had different little bits on it, but I can't recall what it was-doesn anybody know?

The "Warped" section is a mastering defect by Capitol, which causes the tape to drag(I.E. slow down) at 2 places.

I don't think many unheard vocals could be found on acetates, but the final version of "Wind Chimes" would be realistic for example. The mix Michael Vosse talked about in 1969. I know the boxset version is supposed to be finished, but according to Vosse there were little music box overdubs on the piano part, mixed with different echos. Brian's musical arrangement of wind chimes tingling in the rough wind. Would love to hear that.

Wow. That is fascinating. I'll have to read that 1969 Vosse interview again. I was thinking that the acetates might have Look/IRan with the group vocal ovedubs and CITFOTM with verse vocals. Another possibility I considered was DYLW with the 'ribbon of concrete' vocal. Do you think the acetates might have this stuff?

I don't know if I would call it a mastering error. There was probably a tape drag and they decided not to fix it digitally. It is interesting that that section isn't on any of the boots.

It's not a different section - it's the verse section, which is on every edit we have of Worms from the era, in the same place it is on the GV box set (and on BWPS) - it's the backing vocals which are unique to this section.  Where the tape with the backing vocals was found, is unclear - it may be from the unlabeled 8 track comp tape that dates to early 1972 and was compiled by Stephen Desper and Carl Wilson for the projected release of Smile in late 1972. The tape include something called "Worms - sections 1,2,4,5,6,7."  I suspect the backing vocals were on one of those sections, but who knows.  I haven't heard of any other Worms tapes or Worms acetates coming to light after this tape.
