Title: Brian Wilson on Bill Medley´s new album
Post by: mikeyj on October 23, 2007, 04:03:22 AM
Brian Wilson on Bill Medley´s new album "Damn Near Righteous", due Sept. 25, will feature Brian Wilson's "In My Room" with vocal contributions by Brian himself.

Just read this on Mt. Vernon.. pretty interesting I spose.. how many versions is that now:

In My Room (original)
In My Room (the version with the strings)
In My Room (country version)
In My Room (live at roxy)
In My Room (this new version)

Is there any more I'm missing?

Wasn't there a version by Wilson Phillips with Brian on piano and vocal? I believe it was on their "California"-album

Just listened to this.  The harmonies are gorgeous, the arrangement's pretty good with some interesting bass lines.  Bill Medley's weathered voice is out front, even when he's singing the bass vocals.  It took a couple of listens before I got used to that.  Phil Everly sounds great.  Both Bill and Phil take liberties with their vocal parts, adding little soulful touches here and there.  You'd certainly expect that from Bill, but Phil really sounds good.  At one point Brian tries to do the same, but he just doesn't have that 'blues singer' mentality, so his attempt sounds a little awkward next to the other two more soulful voices.  Not bad overall, but I think I'll keep the Beach Boys' version on my mp3 player, thank you very much.

Who sang the one on the bw tribute ?

David Crosby?

Also, there is the little known Manson version, featuring the family on backing vocals.

From memory I think it was David Crosby, Jimmy Webb and Carly Simon?

Are you sure they did In My Room? That is just weird. Do you know if its ever been released?

I withdraw the Manson joke before it gets out of hand.   Sometimes I'm just a smart ass.    ::)

Yes they did "In My Room"...it was one of the highlights of the tribute for me, actually.  The only release I know of is on the tribute DVD; I don't think there was a CD release of that.

And yes Brian was on the Wilson Phillips version of "In My Room" also.

I just heard a snippet of this version on www.allmusic.com.  So nice of Satan to record a cover of this.   >:D

There are actually two versions with Tammy Wynette... A version with Brian on background vocals, and another one (unreleased on CD - you have to watch the Nashville Sounds DVD to hear it) with the Beach Boys on backing vocals.

And this new version is quite good!

I liked hearing Brian singing harmony with Phil Everly...imagine if those two played a show/released an album together.

I also enjoy the Sagittarius version of In My Room that was released as a 45 and on their Blue Marble LP

There's also the live version from the Imagination - Words And Music CD. It features Brian, Timothy B. Schmitt, Bruce Johnston, and a couple of others. Decent version.

I didn't realize that Bill Medley was a Righteous Brother...that is cool, an Everly Brother, a Righteous Brother and a Beach Boys on one song :)

So far, I think it's okay.  Three stars out of five.  I don't know that I've heard a sung version that didn't pale compared to the original.  People who cover it instrumentally seem to do it justice, though one poor fellow who did so ended up committing suicide.

I agree.  It's a decent cover (you really can't go wrong covering such a great tune), but the original cannot be topped for me.  I've heard some good covers over the years, my favorite being the Tammy Wynette version with Brian and Carl doing the harmonies.  But there is something about that young Beach Boy blend that puts the original above all others.

Blimey! Bill Medley sounds like a monster on this song - literally!
Brian sounds positively angelic compared to him!
