Title: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: carl r on August 10, 2007, 12:11:13 AM Hi there, new to the board, nice to be here!
What would people would recommend for a compilation of the heaviest rock numbers. I know there are some and have a list below. There are more, aren't there ? ... Not saying these are all I listen to, but most people I know prefer music a bit loud and nasty and sometimes, so do I. Often live versions seem to be more punchy especially with the younger Wilson at the helm. Anyway, so far ... Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: SloopJohnB on August 10, 2007, 02:14:06 AM "The Trader" and "Feel Flows" are heavy rock to you? Wow. :P
I suggest "Student Demonstration Time" (not their best one, but it is heaviest than "Feel Flows" IMO) and "All I Want To Do" (the 20/20 cut, not "All I Wanna Do" from Sunflower). And "Marcella", obviously. ...and why not add "Shortenin' Bread" to that list :-D Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: carl r on August 10, 2007, 02:51:04 AM er... no-one would claim they eat bats for breakfast , not the "heaviest" but still, sort of like early AC-DC
specifically the trader from "in concert" i think its maybe a driving riff, probably because the guitar's raw sound I've seen videos of "feel flows" live from 1977 with charles lloyd, very hard to categorize but I think its cool anyway, the middle sounds like Gong or some of the other trippy stuff around at the time. Probably looking at the band would dispel any illusions about them being particularly underground. One of the many "would have beens" if they had allowed themselves to do a whole album of harder stuff.... I just don't find the studio versions to be that "hard"! :) Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: punkinhead on August 10, 2007, 07:40:35 AM that live version of All I want To Do is aawesome! Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Jon Stebbins on August 10, 2007, 10:51:41 AM "River Song" on Dennis Wilson's - Pacific Ocean Blue (truly the heaviest Beach Boys song)
Live versions of "Marcella" or "Wild Honey" in 1972/73 is right there too. Umm...modification...There are several things on Smile that are heavier than any other BB's material...Mrs O Learys Cow, Cabinessence, Child Is Father to the Man...some that that stuff trips real hard. "Amusement Parks U.S.A." really gets rolling at the end, and the unreleased Brian solo song, "Concert Tonight" rocks, with Brian doing his best Ozzy impression.:police: Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: the captain on August 10, 2007, 04:30:08 PM "Concert Tonight" rocks, with Brian doing his best Ozzy impression.:police: I was trying to forget that song ever existed. You've just set me back in my progress on that goal. Sorry, Luther. >:D After listening to Brian's new "Pink Floyd" song all week, I thought I'd go back to the old daze. How about "In My Car"? That rocks a little! I'm Going Your Way was great. Most of the Wild Honey album, I think I was Made To Love Her, HSBITM, Here Comes The Night etc. Do You Wanna Dance, Pappa Ooh Mow Mow, Johnny B Goode, What'd I Say (really rocks). They did a lot of good hard rock.
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Beach Boy on August 11, 2007, 10:31:42 AM Roller Skating Child is one of my very favourite rock songs from the guys. Some Live versions of Still Cruisin' rocks too!
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: the captain on August 11, 2007, 10:39:47 AM Let Us Go On This Way is a heavy rocker, relatively speaking.
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: PongHit on August 11, 2007, 01:53:17 PM How 'bout "City Blues"? Does that qualify?
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Sheriff John Stone on August 11, 2007, 04:57:31 PM Roller Skating Child is one of my very favourite rock songs from the guys. Definitely; there's a lot going on in there, especially some great guitar. The whole first side rocks, actually. The Beach Boys Rock You! Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Aegir on August 12, 2007, 06:21:33 PM Live versions of I Get Around and Hawaii, circa 1964 are pretty good, like the TAMI Show or the Lost Concert. Surfin '92 is pretty hard, but in a bad way.

Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Dave in KC on August 13, 2007, 06:12:16 PM I think my Palisades Park wins this discussion because you can actually hear one of the Beach Boys (Dennis) exclaiming right in the middle of the song that "We're cookin' so hard, I can hardly stand it". At least that's what I think he is saying. I'll take his suggestion as gospel.

At least that's what I think he is saying. I'll take his suggestion as gospel. Palisades park is an awesome BB's song. Much better than the original! The original is so fast and hyped up it can't be appreciated properly, the reworked BB's song is just rockin! I love the drums on it. Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Sheriff John Stone on August 14, 2007, 06:52:38 AM Palisades park is an awesome BB's song. Much better than the original! The original is so fast and hyped up it can't be appreciated properly, the reworked BB's song is just rockin! I love the drums on it. With the possible exception of "It's OK", I always felt "Palisades Park" was the best song on 15 Big Ones. I realize they had to release an original song, "It's OK", as a single after "Rock And Roll Music", but I thought "Palisades" had hit single potential. If anything, it proved that Brian could still produce great songs, and add that little special "something" that only he could add... Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: donald on August 14, 2007, 07:22:49 AM Its Getting Late and Maybe I Don't Know (already mentioned) from The Beach Boys (85) are decent rockers belted out by Carl Wilson if you like that 80's sound.
Love you has some "heavy" stuff in Roller Skating Child and Lets Go On This Way. Keepin the Summer Alive, title cut. In Concert and some of the live material from Endless Harmony kick pretty good. Personally, I like to alternate soft with harder on my compilations. Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: pixletwin on August 14, 2007, 01:35:32 PM Do It Again is "hard rockin'" for the BB.
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: carl r on August 14, 2007, 10:50:50 PM Thanks for all the ideas - it seems that the production is important, IMO after Carl and the Passions, the rock numbers suffered a bit.
Let Us Go On This Way, for example, great track, could have been dealt with a number of ways... The version on "Love You" isn't too bad, the synths actually rock more than what I have to describe as the "Old Fart Boogie" style on 15 Big Ones and BB '85. So if the band had applied their then-current production techniques to the rockier tracks on Love You, I'm sure it would have turned them to cheese. I still think some of these songs could've sounded like the Stooges if they had racked it up a notch. Did they ever play Let Us Go On This Way live? And was it recorded ? It's About Time I'm Going Your Way Sound Of Free (Though that's a Dennis song, and I'm not entirely sure if it's that heavy) You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone Marcella Feel Flows Student Demonstration Time Keepin' The Summer Alive Maybe I Don't Know Hard Times Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: JK on April 10, 2014, 02:53:15 AM "Little Honda" (the originally released version) comes immediately to mind. Oddly, the alternative version rocks a lot less, thanks to the more melodic backing vocals in the chorus.
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Jukka on April 10, 2014, 02:54:17 AM Cabinessence chorus is really heavy. Not in a rocking way, but it weighs a ton. Multiple tons. Like a huge steam engine.

Specifically the "I'll make all my money to spend on you honey, Yeah- Please Give me a clue..."? I don't think so. Not my fave era of Brian vocals, but he just goes for it there doesn't he? I like the commitment there. Can anyone mention a harder rocking Brian vocal?

An absolutely beautiful expression of isolation and not being able to relate to your surroundings. Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: Cabinessenceking on April 18, 2014, 05:09:19 AM “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times” An absolutely beautiful expression of isolation and not being able to relate to your surroundings. No one can touch this song. Is it even rock? what genre is this song? This song is an impossible composition. I hate to rate modern musicians on par with the classical as the musical environment and education of that earlier period differs so much from that of popular musicians, but damn if that song is not as moving or intricate yet direct as anything composed by the very most respected and renowned musicians of all time. Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: pmugghc on April 18, 2014, 05:36:32 AM How come no one has mentioned the live "Fun fun fun" on In Concert?
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: JK on April 18, 2014, 07:10:59 AM It seems the description "rock" is proving troublesome! That said, I agree with the poster who forwarded "Dance, Dance, Dance" as a likely candidate. My third favourite BB track. Surely a song has to be uplifting spiritually as well as physically to really "rock hard"? I'd say "DDD" fits the bill very nicely.
Title: Re: best and heaviest BB rock numbers Post by: pmugghc on April 18, 2014, 07:33:17 AM Slightly OT, but Do You Wanna Dance was a solid rocker, how come it wasn't played more live?
