In 1975, Reprise put out a hits compilation of post 1966 stuff called "Good Vibrations - Best of the Beach Boys". I have some questions for someone who has a copy: 1. Does "Do it Again" have the workshop coda at the end? 2. Does "Caroline, No" have the train and dog barking at the end? 3. Is "Wouldn't It Be Nice" the correct version as opposed to the more prominent lead vocal version that was on some of the 80s Capitol compilations? 4. Is "Heroes and Villains" the "45 version" or the regular version (not sure how to tell the difference). Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks! Title: Re: 1975 Hits Compilation Post by: I. I once read that the version of "GV" on this album was a slightly different mix, but again, can't hear it myself (and seeing as the master was mono and the vocal mutlitracks have been lost since about fall 1966, I kinda doubt it. Remastered maybe). Still, the source was of the highest caliber.

The term "45 version" is technically correct, since these two songs appeared on 45 singles before they appeared on an album. Title: Re: 1975 Hits Compilation Post by: al on January 24, 2006, 11:09:43 AM I always assumed they were differentiating the 45 (and Smiley Smile) version from the SMiLE outtakes that had preceeded it on the previous CD on the box-set. I didn't assume from that they meant anything else. I've got the 45 and it sounds exactly the same to me as the version on Smiley Smile.

Especially with a Smile era track since there really weren't any compilations that had Smile-era material on it in such an amount as the box set, so they had to milk anything associated with Smile as much as possible - even by spinning the truth on already released tracks on an album. Saying "Smiley Smile version" to differentiate H&V Pt. 2 or whatever on the set would have just been too honest. |
