Title: New recording: Shake the Frost Out Post by: the captain on June 24, 2007, 12:02:25 PM http://download.yousendit.com/F8AE77814D20E321
Another new recording, this one done yesterday. It's called "Shake the Frost Out," and is a slightly dopey pop song with a tinge of country in the main guitar lick. (The previous version, a demo of which I probably posted, had a lot of "doot doot" vocals all over. I didn't use them here.) If the subject matter seems silly, well, that's true. A friend of mine and I were going back and forth with "season" songs, so I did this for spring. And if you don't get into it, maybe you've never lived through a MN winter! Title: Re: New recording: Shake the Frost Out Post by: Rocker on June 24, 2007, 12:51:20 PM Nice, but imo it's too fast and not enough bass. But that's just how I would've done it. You of course wrote it and know what you want it to sound like.
Like the guitar, I guess a Telecaster? Title: Re: New recording: Shake the Frost Out Post by: the captain on June 24, 2007, 01:09:33 PM It's a Strat, actually.
On the bass thing--you're right about that. In fact, I am having a friend do the real bass on Tuesday (along with replacing some of the background vocals). My bass is a 15-year-old cheap Ibanez that frankly was bad even when I bought it, and has only gone downhill. I've just never gotten around to getting a decent bass setup, and being not a real bassist, I guess that's why. But anyway, it sounds awful, very uneven, loud in one register, inaudible (in the mix) in another, and attempts to EQ it didn't really solve anything. Hopefully a good bassist with a good bass through a good rig will handle that. I'll post those results later in the week. As for the tempo, it is a little fast. I have a demo that is quite a bit slower, but I didn't like that, either. Maybe I overcompensated, but I'm OK with that. I like the drum sound too. What recording equipment do you use?

Funny, because for the drums here, due to some complications, I just used three mics, two of which are MK319 condenser mics as overheadds and the other for a kick mic, that I don't even know--it was grabbed at my drummer's house when other equip wasn't working. (The plan was an already limited 4 mics, to avoid spending time doing the sub-mixing I would have had to do in very limited time--we were trying to do as many songs in one evening as possible, and got 5 drum parts done.) Glad you like it, though! I have to say, I thought it worked out pretty well, too, esp considering the limitations and my limited exp engineering drums. |
