Title: Traveling Wilburys

I picked up the reissue of both albums + dvd today (it came out yesterday in the US). A lot of fun, especially watching the DVD.

This is a cool set.  The bonus tracks are a good listen and the DVD is really great as well.  That being said, my only beef is that the DVD is a bit short.  Being that already had the two albums from the initial release, I only picked this up for the DVD and it didn't document all of the songs from the record and didn't even touch on the second album at all other than the videos from it.  Perhaps they didn't have footage of those sessions.  Again, this is a great set regardless.  Pick it up if you don't have them already.

Yeah, I would have liked it if they could have had a retrospective DVD extra featuring Lynn and Petty (at least - although wouldn't it be incredible to have Dylan comment on it all!). As wonderful as it is, the 25 minute documentary features only contemporary footage from the time the first album was recorded and released. Interestingly, everything on the DVD including the original videos are in anamorphic 16 x 9 ratio. It fills a widescreen TV nicely, but crops the original image.

I agree that it's a great package. The sound is good and the bonus tracks are of the same quality as the rest of the material. If find myself enjoying the Wilburys a lot more this time around!

That would be great...or would it? Sometimes his interviews can be frustrating to a Wilsonian degree if you're looking for some sort of secrets, or impressive content. He's often very matter-of-fact about things, seemingly trying to chip away at anyone's fantasies of him having some kind of supernatural mystique. He'd be wont to say "Well, we wrote those songs in that house, and then we recorded them. It was a lot of fun. Roy--he had that voice, you know?"

I actually love Dylan's elliptical way of speaking; it serves him well on his XM radio show. You're right that he probably wouldn't have a whole lot to say about the Wilburys, but I would have liked to have heard some background on the second album from at least one band member.

Jann Wenner's interview with Dylan in the 40th Anniversary Rolling Stone was hilarious, especially the part where Dylan keeps correcting Wenner on the "Ain't Talkin'" lyric ("It's mystic garden, man!").
