Title: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: TheLazenby on June 06, 2007, 11:53:17 AM You know, I listened to "Battle Hymn" finally...
That doesn't actually live up to its bad reputation. Quite a fun listen, actually. Mike fumbles it a little bit, but it's certainly not as godawful as most people have said! Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: Wilsonista on June 06, 2007, 12:49:32 PM I think it's hilarious, a funnier musical joke than Smart Girls, even.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: C.Miller on June 06, 2007, 06:58:50 PM I agree,I like it. The track has lots of interesting synth parts are playing off each other, very cool to hear.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: pixletwin on June 06, 2007, 07:07:15 PM I like it too. It is really funny and I love that weird organ part (Brian?) and the banjo too. Is that Brian singing the hi on "glory gloy hallelujah"? It sounds kind of like a record for kindergardeners.

Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: punkinhead on June 06, 2007, 09:04:43 PM i like the sleigh bells on it, nice touch
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: MBE on June 06, 2007, 10:02:49 PM I thought it was Brian on that part, maybe Carl too. Al I hear as well.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: El Goodo on June 07, 2007, 07:16:37 AM i like the sleigh bells on it, nice touch a turd with sleigh-bells is still a turd. Out of the still wonderful unreleased BB's stuff out there, it makes no sense trying to big up Battle Hymn, if only the Caribou fire had got hold of that particular tape. This thread is showing the appreciation of the song. We've heard all you goobers talk about how much you hate it enough already. So why can't you just NOT spill your hatred for the song in the one positive thread that exists? Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: ♩♬🐸 Billy C ♯♫♩🐇 on June 07, 2007, 08:04:54 AM I like it too. It's dumb as hell, but enjoyable.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: mikeyj on June 07, 2007, 08:09:26 AM if only the Caribou fire had got hold of that particular tape. Of course there is heaps of unreleased stuff out there that is better than this song, and I think most people acknowledge that. There is tonnes of stuff that I would love to see released over this but this would be better than nothing. Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... But we do agree on something then, this is the one positive thread that exists about this song ;D Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: c-man on June 07, 2007, 06:00:51 PM A goober's a peanut. No reason to be offended.
Now if the "g" and the "b" were reversed...THAT might be offensive. ;) Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: mtaber on June 18, 2009, 06:42:08 PM I just stumbled upon this and heard it for the first time EVER just a few minutes ago...
I am speechless... Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: mtaber on June 18, 2009, 07:15:23 PM OK, I have now listened to it 8 times...
I like it, other than the Mike vocal... Sounds like "Child of Winter" meets "Everybody Wants to Live" meets "Cotton Fields" meets ... Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: the captain on June 18, 2009, 07:17:01 PM Sounds like funny joke meets Beach Boys to me. From that perspective, it's harmless and enjoyable.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: SG7 on June 18, 2009, 07:21:11 PM It's better than some of the other things in the catalog and that says a lot :lol :lol :lol

Just visualizing Mike trying to sing it that fast will put a smile on your faceTitle: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: Dancing Bear on June 21, 2009, 07:39:54 AM It's no more cringe-worthy than a good number of 76-77 Brian productions, released and unreleased. Now, if Brian meant it as a joke... We'll never know.
Title: Re: Battle Hymn Of The Republic... Post by: Andrew G. Doe on June 21, 2009, 08:24:28 AM Told this tale before, but it's a good one - the compilers of Endless Harmony were trawling the archives and unearthed the master for "Battle Hymn...", whereupon they excitedly phoned Alan and told him they were going to include it on said comp. The ensuing conversation, as reported to me, went like this:
ACJ - "Are you sure ?" "Yeah, why not ?" "Have you actually listened to it ?" "Um... no - why ?" "(30-odd seconds of silence) Weeelllll....." The tape was duly auditioned... and dropped from consideration. |
