Title: Good Vibrations Tour UK DVD question
Post by: Awesoman on June 03, 2007, 11:20:07 PM
I noticed that there is a DVD of that 1970's Lorne Michaels-produced Beach Boys TV special that was released in Britain.  This is the DVD featuring the "SNL" type skit with Dan Ackroyd and Jim Belushi as well as the choir-performed version of "That Same Song".  I've never seen this special and would like to get the DVD but I'm wondering if it will even play on my American DVD player.  According to the UK Amazon.com site (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0000CERRH?tag=beachboyscom-21&link_code=as2&creativeASIN=B0000CERRH&creative=374929&camp=211189 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0000CERRH?tag=beachboyscom-21&link_code=as2&creativeASIN=B0000CERRH&creative=374929&camp=211189)) it's a Region 0 DVD which I believe means it should work on any DVD player.  I just don't want to risk buying this thing and not having it work so I was wondering if anyone else in the U.S. has this DVD and has it worked for them?  Thanks in advance.

I went to the page and thats the wrong cover? ??? Thats the Surfin USA DVD (which I dont own). The front cover is supposed to look like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Beach-Boys-Good-Vibrations-Tour/dp/B000AATPWE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-1723384-1382816?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1180942378&sr=8-1

Also I know its not that important but I believe its John Belushi not Jim. Im not a big fan of this DVD to be honest except for the "That Same Song" and "I'm Bugged At My Ol Man" versions as well as the versions of "God Only Knows" and "You Are So Beautiful". By the way, Im sure it would work if it is Region 0. But since they couldnt even get the cover right Im not sure how accurate the Region Code information is ;)

It works in the USA. Actually I think it's a great special because they were still near the top of their game (except for Brian). But he comes alive on That Same Song

This is a classic.  One of the reasons I became a Beach Boys nut was because of this show, when it originally aired back in August of '76.  Being the young impressionable 13-year old I was, I thought "Man, these guys are cool!  That Brian guy just lays around in bed, that Mike guy moves around the stage like he's possessed, and that Dennis guy justs POUNDS the drums!".  Little did I know...   :)

Depends on your DVD player.

I'm in the UK (which is Region 2), but Region 0 discs (largely music - all my BB ones) would show the picture in black and white on my player, which was a few years old.  I would think that newer players wouldn't have a problem with it.  That's the worst case scenario, as far as I know, so it ain't that bad.

It should work properly on your computer though, provided it plays DVDs.   And I picked up a new region-free DVD player for £35, so that's usually a fairly cheap option to get around it.

I love that dvd, by the way, just for Mike's waistcoat.  Of course, you'll need it to work in colour to see the gold properly.

The link I provided was the one provided at www.beachboys.com in the review section of that site.  I also found the link you post it.  $45 for this disc seems a little steep; I don't want to go to the trouble of putting that money down only to discover the thing doesn't work.  I can live without it.

The important notation is that the disc is NTSC which is the U.S. standard 30 frames per second refresh rate so it should play on U.S. players. Normally European releases are PAL (24 frames per second) which would require that your DVD player is capable of converting the image to NTSC (the video would then be watchable but play 4% faster).

Get the Brazilian release. It's completely compatible with U.S. equipment. I found my copy through eBay.
