I believe it was Mr. Desper (correct me if I'm wrong) who wrote on this board that the Beach Boys didn't play on Monterey because it was sponsored by either Coca-Cola or Pepsi, and that Mike didn't want to be associated with those brands because they were poisoning the youth of America.

So how the hell did I Get Around ever end up in that commercial?

While I didn't hear that as one of the excuses for not appearing at Monterey, if it is true, it seems like it was another time when Mike Love finally saw the light...the big, bright, shiny green light of money.

From the Stephen W. Desper thread, page 4:

The Beach Boys were to play the festival, but because COKE was a sponsor, Mike Love wanted to pass on the occasion, so they pulled out.  Remember at the time Mike and Brian were into health foods and good living(?).

Coke (an I mean the drink) is unhealthy. It's 10% sugar. That's 13 sugarcubes per can. You know that can't possibly be good.

Just to close the "Coca-Cola case"... Its amount of sugar is not the only bad thing about it. Coca-Cola is addictive... And one should mention its acidity. "Coca-Cola Classic" has a pH of 2,5 on a scale from 0 to 14; 0 being the value of battery acid and 6,8/7,2 being considered as the "normal", neutral value of the human body... Which means that it is quite corrosive (more than vinegar for instance). Of course there's nothing wrong with drinking a glass of Coke now and then, but drinking it every day is definitely not the best thing to do.  ;D

Back on topic, I love those kitschy old commercials, and this one is a nice example!
