Title: Three Best Beach Boy Ballads
Post by: DUMB ANGEL on January 21, 2006, 12:00:10 PM
In my humble opinion, the three best ballads the Beach Boys ever did were; In My Room,Don't Worry Baby, and God Only Knows. Any Thoughts?

Don't Worry Baby, God Only Knows, and Warmth of the Sun imo. but then again, there are so many to choose from.

I'll just say these three are my three favorites (with a few alternates included), rather than worry about what best means.

Surfer Girl
Wonderful (60s Smile version)
Let the Wind Blow

With strong competition from Our Sweet Love, All I Wanna Do, Warmth of the Sun and Kiss Me, Baby (as well as those mentioned in the first post and many others)

Don't worry baby
Warmth of the sun
God only knows

also:
Keep an eye on summer
Your summer dream
Surfer's moon
She knows me too well
Oh Darlin (great song, miserable production)

and, though I hate to say it, many others, that won't come to my mind at the time

Deirdre
The Warmth Of The Sun
Kiss Me Baby

Plus like 60 others that I would put up there.

Warmth of the Sun
Girls on the Beach
Surfer Girl

alternate: The Lonely Sea

In this selection I defined a ballad is a song for slow dancing...therefore I chose all early lush harmony numbers.  There are really too many to pick any three.

I hope someone says Cabinessence. Though the whole song isn't a typical ballad, I buy into the whole "Sitting in a log cabin with the one you love and talking".

This is also the track I think would've crushed all opposition had the album been released. It's so bizarre and unusual.

Then you run the "Iron Horse" on her?

I introduce her to my new Chinese friend and suggest a little bit of three-way fun.

Kiss Me Baby
Please Let Me Wonder
Warmth Of The Sun

Thought about Let Him Run Wild but not sure if it qualifies as a ballad - a lot of BB stuff is sort of slow-mid tempo stuff rather than rockers. Those three wil do nicely though...

Ironically that's what Sinatra wanted to call it when he wanted to cover GOK.

All of the above are excellent choices.  It appears that WOTS is in the top 3.

And guess who is given full credit for the Lyrics.

I'll nominate a long shot, and say that one of my all time favorites is One More Night Alone written by Billy Hinsche and sung by Carl Wilson on the Youngblood album.

I Wanna Pick You Up
Let's Put Our Hearts Together
All I Wanna Do

Great choices! I have to say, I Wanna Pick You Up gets me every single time. The genuine affection expressed in this song is absolutely heartbreaking and that little synth melody that comes in at the start of the 2nd verse has to be one of my favorite Brian moments ever, true unadulterated genius!

Edit: Just noticed that post was from 2006. Anyway... :smokin
