Probably old news, not sure.  But he says Brian "wasn't all that talented."  And that he wasn't impressed that someone without a brain worshipped him.

Phil has been a very bitter person for years. I think lies and abuse are the only thing he has produced in many-a-year.

I don't think Phil Spector saying something stupid diminishes his contributions to music. He created some great, great records, and whether he went shithouse nuts, played around with guns too much, was abusive to women, killed someone and trashed BW's talent doesn't affect those records. More evidence that he's not OK in the head, and that's about it.

In a way, I think it's too bad we focus on the personal lives of celebrities as much as we do. If Phil Spector killed someone (oh, and badmouthed BW), he ought to be in jail...but Be My Baby is great. If Michael Jackson is a pedophile, he ought to be in jail...but Thriller is great. (and so on) I'm very guilty of this phenomenon, too. A while back I started a thread about taking extraordinary interest in the Beach Boys' personal lives and stories, and letting it influence appreciation of the music.

Spector's overrated.  The only thing he has on Brian is he's a better shot.

I agree that, among certain music fans, Spector is overrated. But he did create a new sound, and there's always something to be said for that. Overrated or not, though, he did good stuff. And all the rest is stuff for the gossip pages.

I dont think hes overrated. I think hes a wonderful producer. Talk all the sh*t you want about him, if it wasnt for him we might not have some of the great Brian Wilson songs we do today.

Though, I just think his comments irked a few people and are sayin things they wouldnt normally say.

I don't know if mental illness afflicts Phil Spector, but his certainly afflicts those around him.

You know, on a purely human level (not related to the music), it's a shame that Spector apparently hasn't had sufficient treatment for whatever is wrong with him. I mean, it isn't as if everyone hasn't known horrible stories about his behavior for years and years--long before he allegedly killed someone. He obviously was not well and needed some kind of help.

I doubt Spector would let anyone close enough to offer assistance or help.

I would like to clarify that I believe Spector was a great producer.

Anyone says songs like Be My Baby was no big deal, has a lot to learn.

Lets also remember that he produced Lennon's Imagine and Harrison's All Things Must Pass. (well, co-produced anyhoo).

Spector...seriously talented. And all the credit that people give him he does deserve. It's just a shame he's so full of hate and anger. Personality issues aside, I respect him in every way.

It's an old quote, first printed in a UK Sunday paper about three weeks before he shot Lana. The odd thing (aside from the timing) was that Phil seemed in a genuinely good mood for the interview.

That Ringo party tape is crazy, when was it recorded Andrew 1998? Nobody has brought up the fact all the very nice things Spector said about Brian during his mid 70's comeback. He said how Brian was a  sweet person and that he admired that he didn't care about sales as much as how the fans would like his music..

Spector is overrated. Plus, he seems to enjoy being cruel to people and obviously Brian as a devoted fan is an easy target.

Brian got totally shitfaced and announced to the assembled throng that "Van Dyke Parks is the biggest butthole in the world". Van Dyke was present, and mortified.

This was also the party where Brian sings a horribly off-key version of "Barbara Ann" as well as "stalking" Hank Ballard around the backyard repeatedly professing Ballard's greatness.

Brian's meds and alcohol should not have been mixed. Fortunately, it appears to have been an isolated incident whereas Spector has been talking trash and treating people poorly for forty years (or more).

That could be it. I've never heard anything on 45. I was reading a quote from Brian where he said something like hearing cds of some of his favorite music wasn't as good as the original 45s because, in his words, they "sound squished like sh*t".

I read some things on Spector in the last few days, that have stopped me playing Be My Baby altogether

On the bright side...maybe Phil's comment will stoke Brian's "Murray-Wilsonian" competitive side, a la 1966 -- as with him and the Beatles!!  I could sure use a new album from Brian.

I rather doubt that particular comment will reach Brian's eyes or ears.

This is one case where I'd support Melinda for sheltering Brian.

That sounds like another person famously known as Mike Love. Of course, just to be fair, Mike never killed anyone. But I have heard somewhere that Mike has been abusive to some women. Is there any truth to that?

I do like Spectors new blonde Byrds-like wig, it is (slightly) more understated than his giant afro look he was sporting a couple of years ago.

If it was for Ringo or his wife Barbara's birthday it could not of been 1998 as I wrongly guessed because I have an June 1998 Uncut magazine that mentions it. I would go with 1992 or 1997 becaue those are the years Brian helped with Ringo's recordings. BTW get Back To Mono on vinyl it sounds terrific that way.

Screw Spector. Brian went above and beyond him without a doubt. Spector must have an inferiority complex.

I caught a bit of the Court TV coverage this afternoon, which was mostly a recap, since the trial was delayed.  Ashleigh Banfield was disgusted by Phil's statements on Springsteen, including that Bruce stole the Wall of Sound and that some of Bruce's albums are repetitive, song-wise.  I don't think that makes him more likely to be guilty of murder, though, the fact that he's trashing these people.

I'm not impressed with the prosecutor's case thusfar, and Phil's attorneys seem to be doing a good job.  I have no idea what happened, but it doesn't look like Phil pulled the trigger.  It's going to be interesting to see the prosecution's full case and theory about what happened.  Banfield was repeating a rumor that Yoko Ono and Keith Richards will be called as character witnesses, but my understanding is that that was said to be false as of last week.

Was Yoko even around for when John and Phil really went mad?

Phil was very talented.  I think I speak for alot of BW/BB fans when I say that Phil's talent could be summed up in just eight words:

I don't know if that's entirely true.  Phil came up with a lot of ideas on his own, such as having multiple instruments playing the same melodic line.  And the idea of mastering/mixing in the red, practically to the point of distortion, was also his.  But I do agree that he would have been nowhere without having professional arrangers providing the preliminary ideas and sketching out Phil's other ideas to the studio musicians.  And having those studio musicians carry it out. Not to mention the great songwriters.  Oh, and one more -- the singers!  He would have been nowhere without his act's vocal talents, as well as their images, to sell his songs.
