Title: Surf's Up mistake? Post by: mikeyj on March 23, 2007, 07:12:16 AM I was reading through this page http://www.cabinessence.net/essays/noises2.html (which is a guide to "Noises and Oddities in Beach Boys Recordings") And i cant understand what the writer is on about when he says "SURF'S UP: BACKING TRACK MISTAKE AT 0:46-0:54"? Can anyone here notice a mistake in the backing track? Am I missing something here?
Title: Re: Surf's Up mistake? Post by: Roger Ryan on March 23, 2007, 07:52:11 AM I'm pretty sure this is a reference to "bleed-through" noise that occured when a second generation master was used for subsequent releases (after the initial album pressing). Audible talking could faintly be heard during the 1971 track on many of the issues including the 1993 "Good Vibrations" box set. Mark Linett (or perhaps Alan Boyd) found a first generation master of the track in time to include it on the Captiol CD reissue of "Sunflower/Surf's Up", the "Best Of The Brother Years" collection and on the "Classics Selected By Brian Wilson" compilation. So, unless you listen to the track on the "Good Vibrations" box or on the original CBS CD issue of "Surf's Up", you won't hear the noise.

I think the author has fallen into the trap of judging originally produced recordings by way of their reissues. Go back to the original to really judge "Noises and Oddities in Beach Boys Recordings." Otherwise his title should read "Noises and Oddities in Beach Boy Reissues" If this title is correct within your quotes, it is in itself an Oddity. "Beach Boys Recordings" is wrong. It should be written "Beach Boy's Recordings" or "Beach Boy Recordings" or "The recordings of The Beach Boys." ~swd Title: Re: Surf's Up mistake?
