Title: Brian Wilson web site down?
Post by: Charles LePage @ ComicList on January 18, 2006, 08:50:58 AM
I'm getting "The page cannot be displayed" when I try to access the site.

Same here. Actually, McCartney's site was down earlier today, too, but it seems to be up now.

yeah I noticed that as well, don't know what's up with the site.

Got this last time I tried -

"You have reached the future home of:
brianwilson.com

This website is hosted at ValueWeb - An Affinity Company."

Yeah, I got some weird site too. This sort of thing has happened before, so hopefully it will be back soon.

I miss it. Too many good times on that thing.

May it remain so, at least message board-wise.

Title: Re: Brian Wilson web site down?
Post by: SurferGirl7 on January 18, 2006, 12:51:29 PM
I hope so. For me that is where it all started  :o. I think from all of those posts over there just got very nasty after a while. Really got away from the music. I remember reading about when George Michael shut his board down because he didn't like what the people were saying about his new album.

Hopefully that is not the reason.

Now the site says

You have reached the future home of:
brianwilson.com

The domain is paid for until March of this year.  Maybe they are just doing some massive remodeling?

Title: Re: Brian Wilson web site down?
Post by: Rocker on January 18, 2006, 01:32:06 PM
Massive remodeling ould be great, though the site itself was already very cool. I also started there message board-wise, but now I don't like it very much there. Too much not-interesting sh*t goin' on there.

Now the site is back, but the board is gone.  Weird.

I vote we make this thread act as the BW.com site's board. If you want to whine that you're mistreated, threaten to leave altogether, return, threaten to leave again, praise BW with no regard for reality, bash ML with no regard for reality, and occasionally put up some kind of stupid trivia question, this is the thread to do it in.

Brian, there's people suffering all over this world and we have no idea what to do about it. BRIAN, TALK TO US!!!!!  BTW, did you get the birthday cards for your beautiful little girls?

                                                                                                                      L&M,

THAT'S IT!!! I am sick of everyone mistreating me on this board. I regret to say this because this board used to be a good place to discuss the Magic that BRIAN WILSON blesses us with, but now it is just a forum for people to force their political and religious beliefs on others. I AM LEAVING and will NEVER POST HERE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I Really Want For Christmas is the MOST AMAZING ALBUM EVER RECORDED, so much better than that stuff he did with the Beach Boys. The singing is so much better, the musical performances, the production, WOW! Christmasey is the best song Brian has ever written.

Wait a minute, that's this board.

Can I just slag off God and the republicans at this point and say the US should stop declaring war on everyone.....(pause for Joe Burk's head to explode......).

And can I just publicly admit I have no intention of buying the Xmas album. There, said it. World hasn't stopped....

Don't provoke the ire of the Americans here. And don't disrespect our troops. Slag off God and the republicans all you want (I'll join in with slagging the democrats).

You can see how well Beach Boys fans discussing religion and politics goes on the Shut Down board.  As in, it does not go well.

Brian, what do you think about the Iran newk-ler situation?  Maybe you and Van Dyke should write an album.  It might change people's minds and bring whirled peas.   Did you get the fruit basket that I sent from me and Bubba Ho Tep?  I'm sure you did.  Feel free to call me anytime.  I'm going to post my phone number on this board, haha.  Dont anyone else call me but Brian.  1-493-555-1212.  By the way, how are the kids doing?  Can I come over?  In Over My Head is the bestest record ever made and it deserves the Number One spot in every music chart known to the world.

L&M,

Dave Jacobs, Linda, Sue, Ant, Viv, and Jery Boyd can't get on the site?!?!?! Oh my goodness! This needs immediate attention, Mr. Admin!!!! What ever will we do? Is the world still turning?!?!

Kie hasn't posted in 45 minutes! Has he been banned? Mr. Admin, you are way out of line banning Kie because he didn't like "GIOMH"!!! What's this? Now Brian Christie is banned! I heard from Archie Bunker that Brian Christie was banned because Brian doesn't like someone having the same name as him! This is an outrage! I say we boycott Brian Wilson until Kie and Brian Christie are allowed back on the site!

"Anyone off the street could've come in and helped the Beach Boys record Sunflower and Surf's Up, but through some incredible, cosmic piece of good luck, you were plucked from obscurity."

I just looked over the website just to see.  Someone hose me down and pour Lysol on me.

What dreck.

"You can't expect every BB fan to know who Stephen Desper is, you elitest know-it-all!"  Or something like that.

Let's see -- you spend how much time online writing about your passion for music, you ask questions directly to Mark Linett, throw Chuck Britz' name around, but don't know Desper.  Hmm.

I think that most fans' knowledge of BB history is straight from the liner notes.  David Leaf talks about Britz and Mark's name is on everything.  Because Desper's period was during the Brother Years primarily, and Leaf only glances over his name once in 20/20, most fans don't register his name.  But I tell you -- ANYONE who listens to music from 1968-1972, hears Sunflower and doesn't have a dropped jaw over the sound just doesn't hear it.  I wanted to know who Desper was the first time I played that album in 1991.  Amazing work.

So fine, Blueboard, talk about your small talk all day long.  Scholarly discussions will remain over here and the Smile Shop.  We can have fun here too, but there simply must be a place for more in-depth talk, and the Blueboard isn't it.  The atmosphere is so non conducive when Desper gets dismissed so easily.

I'm the Michael Newman who posted that, my point was I thought Mr.Doe was being unfair by lumping all Blue Boarders in one boat.  Especially since he posts enough there, some would considered him one also.  It's funny you quote one idiot who doesn't seem to know who Steven Desper is or his importance, and then lump all the Blue Boarders as know nothing Brainistas.  What wasn't discussed here was how the unenlightened Blue Boarders rebuked this guy for the rest of the thread.  It must be great to feel so superior to the rest of us, I think actually it's rather juvenile.

Title: Re: Brian Wilson web site down?
Post by: Jeff Mason on January 30, 2006, 09:55:34 AM
No one said anything about superior.  I just don't like the style of the Blue Board.  Read this whole thread to see why -- the level of dialogue is typically at that level of gushy fandom that won't accept any type of critique of Brian Wilson's work.  God forbid someone not like something that Brian did.  This type of attack is just the icing on the cake.  Once I can post a legit critique or gripe about, say, GIOMH on the Blueboard and not get a "you're mean!" response, then I will retract what I am saying.

Put it this way -- every message posted there is done with the knowledge that Brian himself may reply.  That in itself hinders good discussion, I think.

I use to post on the "blue board" all the time, but it got so weird there. Trolls did drive-by postings, thread topics just got so out there.  I got tired of seeing topics posted over and over and over. Not to mention the topics that felt like the posters were psychotic. There are a few people there that have maintained a level of sanity.

Interesting thread. I know why all the bile. But just to remind people that perhaps www.brianwilson.com might be the first message board Brian Wilson may come across. The message board does suffer from its format. It does make people look overemotional and it is difficult to keep a them going because all the messages disappear after 3 days. So if you are a new comer and dont check the site regularly it makes it quite difficult to follow what is going on, as a result of whch difficult to integrate. The shenanigans that go on there are no more childish than on any other board, it just looks that way because its less hidden. Hence the Desper thing at the moment.

When I post on the Blueboard I certainly watch my words more than I used to, but this is also inevitable because there is only so much you can talk about Brian Wilson at the personal level and there are no sections where you can talk about anything else. I once talked about "Nebraska" as in Bruce Springsteen, only to be told he was from New Jersey, lol, and was told off many times for talking about bands like The Ramones, and Weezer, which have nothing to do with Brian Wilson of course ;) But hey, what the heck, its ONLY a message board and I met some really really cool people through the Blueboard, including people who post or have posted on this message board too.

I think MOST BW/BB fans start with the Blueboard and there are a lot of good posters there, yourself, Joe Thomas, John Etherington, the marvellous Paul Adsett, Lee Simpson and many others. As you say, the problem is it only has one topic, and you can't have a full discussion if you have anything negative to say. I don't write anything negative about Brian on it because he DOES read at least some of it and I don't want to be the one that pisses him off enough to affect his confidence! On the whole I've stopped getting peed off but that pillock today got me riled - which was probably his intention.

Did you get the pm re the basement tapes? You may not be up to those yet!

I'm the Michael Newman who posted that, my point was I thought Mr.Doe was being unfair by lumping all Blue Boarders in one boat.  Especially since he posts enough there, some would considered him one also.

Sorry to disappoint, Michael, but I don't consider myself a BlueBoarder, just a BW/BB fan with a waaay too retentive memory. I've a lot of good friends on the Bloo, but there are also people there who, if they walked into the room, I'd up and walk out. Not naming any names, but what's the point of posting anything if you can't actually make any sense at all of the post, or if the post is so ludicrously fawning as to be pointless. Brian Wilson has written, produced and recorded some of the most sublime music I've ever heard. He's also, in my opinion, written, produced and recorded a degree of unmitigated dreck, but to say this to some posters on the Bloo is like handing out the white sheets and waving burning crosses. No-one is above constructive criticism. The other disquieting thing about the Bloo is that, from recent comments, it's obvious that for a substantial percentage of posters, no other boards exist (presumably because they don't toe the"Brian-is-wonderful-and-can-do-no-wrong" line). To address a current debate, I find it profoundly disturbing that peoiple who consider themselves big BW/BB fans have no idea who Steve Desper is, yet cite Sunflower[/i] as a favorite album.

Feel free to repost this on the Bloo. Over the years I've made it a habit not to post anything in a public forum that I'd prefer not to appear somewhere else.

Er... if you see what I mean.  ???

A lot of people on the blueboard just seem to have a need to say everything Brian does is great and that they love Brian.  I don't think there's anything wrong with that in itself if that's what they want to do and other more serious and/or critical discussions are permitted.  And at least some of those people, I have reason to believe, are pretty nice everyday balanced types who just have this rather innocent enthusiasm.  Unfortunately, however, they have provided a rather mis-leading stereotype for some people to hit everyone who happens to take a Brian-centric view of The Beach Boys music around the head with.   The other problem with the blueboard, in my view, is that there is this feeling of having to censor yourself.  I mean I got told off there (by another poster) because I said something that might re-awaken bad memories for Brian!  I just think it would be absolutely ludicrous to have a message board on your site and not expect people to talk about you!  I mean if that is the case (and hopefully it isn't) maybe you are only supposed to say things like "Brian we love you!"

I never really had a problem with people with rose colored glasses.  I'm guilty of it myself sometimes.  When I read the blueboard and see people just falling all over themselves, it doesn't bother me... if that was the extent of it.  The problem to me with that board (outside of the horrible format) is that many of the posters are pretty immature and seem to be easily amused.  It's so strange to see the two different sides of the coin, over there, and over here.  Over here you've got people talking about immensely intricate (ha, is that possible?) things like a specific mike placement on the left channel of some unreleased track, and over there you have people making polls about what their favorite movie is.  Not that that's specifically immature or anything, just an example of different strokes for different folks.  The thing about Mr. Desper is a good example.  To be honest, I had never heard of him until recently... but my initial reaction to his thread above was "Wow, this guy is cool!" not "This guy's a fake!".  Oh well, I'm rambling.

To be fair there's lots of trivia and stuff on here and nothing wrong with that.  There's room for it all IMO.  It's just that there's different sections on this board.

The blueboard is a strange place. When I first started there, I didn't know if there was anyone like me out there. I had JUST started maybe two weeks earliar listening to anything I could (especially only having four CD's when I started and some vinyl). Some trash the blueboard for being not as informative. To all respects, it doesn't have to be. I started there not knowing a lot. A lot of history eluded me. I lurked on Smile Shop for seven months before I joinned. I felt too stupid to join at first. I personally felt I had to get a handle on things before I did. Personally without the blueboard, I would not be here. Without that board and that community of friends I had on there, my intrest in the BB/BW would not have survived.

I would not be here either if I hadn't met people who were here and on the Blueboard at the time.

The blueboard is famous for a certain type of post (and we all know what type) but it is wrong to say that is the only type.
