Title: Carl Wilson Namechecked On "Green Acres"
Post by: endofposts on February 11, 2007, 11:58:06 AM
I was watching an episode of "Green Acres" on TV Land this morning when Carl Wilson's name came up in an interesting context.  The episode was entitled "I Didn't Raise My Pig to Be a Soldier."  The plotline concerned Oliver and Lisa Douglas babysitting Arnold Zifflel, the pig.  While living with the Douglasses, Arnold receives a draft notice.  Oliver brings Arnold to the local draft board to show that Arnold is, indeed, a pig.  The draft board officer starts listing names of local boys who recently reported to the board.  The last name before "Ziffel, Arnold" was "Wilson, Carl."   In looking up the episode, I discovered it aired in late September of 1966, while Carl was indicted for draft evasion in January, 1967.  I assume some months had passed between Carl getting his draft notice and being indicted.  So, was the writer a friend of Carl or Murry?  Maybe he read about it in the paper?  That had to be one of the earliest TV shows to deal with the Vietnam draft controversy, albeit it in a weird way.

Couldn't it be a coincidence?  "Wilson" & "Carl" are very common names...
