Title: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Rocker on January 17, 2006, 09:05:26 AM Taken from the Blueboard as posted by Peter Simpson:
(Peter Simpson on January 17, 2006) Message: from a site called musictap - make of it what you will ............."We're going to start this one out with delays. See? That damn Friday the 13th. Fortunately the list is short. But it begins with the anticipated 40th Anniversary Edition of Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. Last posted as being released on March 21, Capitol will now release the standard CD version along with the CD/DVD combo Limited Edition, and the DualDisc version on April 4. Minor, minor delay. Remember that Capitol is also releasing a 40th Anniversary Edition of Good Vibrations from The Beach Boys on April 18."....... Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Mitchell on January 17, 2006, 09:07:23 AM Interesting. I wonder if it'll be like Queen's new A Night at the Opera release.
I hope the Good Vibrations special edition is a "sessions" CD! Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Old Rake on January 17, 2006, 10:24:58 AM Quote 40th Anniversary Edition of Good Vibrations A *what* now, exactly?!?!?! Alan? Paging Mr. Alan Boyd! Can you elucidate?? Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: LaurieBiagini on January 17, 2006, 10:34:42 AM (listening attentively...) :)
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Bubba Ho-Tep on January 17, 2006, 11:17:52 AM Man, I don’t think I need another copy of Pet Sounds.
Original Vinyl (5 copies) So Tough Double Album Cassette 8-track Original CD Sessions Box Non-HDCD CD HCDC CD DVD-A Live in Concert Live DVD The Good Vibrations release is a good idea. Maybe it can top the charts. Damn you, Mariah Carey. Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 02:01:53 PM Mark just posted, like, two days ago saying they were considering something for a 40th anniversary with no exact plans.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Jardine Power! on January 17, 2006, 02:07:29 PM A "Good Vibrations Sessions" set would rock my world.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 02:27:33 PM Even though we already have a 3-disc of that already?
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 02:31:01 PM Maybe some queasy people would feel less guilty listening to an official release...
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 02:32:04 PM Do you think that plays into people's worship of BWPS over 66 SMiLE?
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 02:40:12 PM Interesting thought. Maybe so.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 02:41:04 PM Yeah, it never occurred to me either. May be an avenue worth investigating.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Bicyclerider on January 17, 2006, 02:47:27 PM A one disc set of Good Vibrations sessions and alternates (presumably the Rarities version - there aren't any other vocal alternates I know of) was being prepared for 1996, to follow the Pet Sounds box set. The PS box set was delayed ... and delayed ... and the GV disc was scrubbed. Don't know how much, if any, work was done on it.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Old Rake on January 17, 2006, 02:48:47 PM I have a 3-CD set of badly-organized, not-all-that-well arranged GV sessions with absolutely NO relevant notation in terms of what was recorded on which date. What I would LIKE is a well-organized, very-well arranged set of GV sessions with copious, intriguing liner notes written by Alan detailing what happened on which date! Plus: mixes that don't sound like they just randomly threw up tapes onto the reel, which is exactly what the Vig set gives us!
The Vigotone Smile / Smiley sets have always frustrated me enormously from the perspective of a sessionologist. Badly organized -- and why do I want to hear tracks where they just break it down track by track? Here's the drums. Here's one vocal. Here's another. Here's another. Here's a guitar overdub. What a waste of space! Its fun once, but that's just flipping knobs! No liner notes. Things out of order. Etc. Its great to listen to but wouldn't we all prefer something more meticulously researched and mixed? Good Vibrations would be an ENORMOUSLY great start. Of course a Smile sessions set is down the road, innit? Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 02:50:36 PM Maybe they've been witholding the 8-track master, feigning it's "disappearance", only to spring super-surprise true stereo and a capella mixes? Hah.

Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 03:02:41 PM It would be so much better if they turned down the previous track when presenting a new overdub or discrete track, rather than succesively bring the faders up. Moofasa, I live for that day.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 03:07:01 PM Ahh, but it's like timelapse photography. Each new color bringing us gradually from sepia to technicolor. The I Just Wasn't Made For These Times vocal overdubs, one by one, gives me a soul-boner.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 03:10:45 PM Horses for courses, I guess. You could just do that yourself if you had all the discrete tracks.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 03:12:02 PM May that happen soon.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 03:19:10 PM It won't happen in this sick music-as-a-commodity world. The tapes certainly won't get bootlegged again, and EMI won't release anything unless it's a guaranteed triple-platinum smash.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 03:26:55 PM Well, even if that is indeed the case, there's enough great BB music to keep me occupied in this life.
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Matinee Idyll on January 17, 2006, 04:03:28 PM How about a 3-CD set of recording the NEW BWPS "Good Vibrations", that'd sure be fun... ::)
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 04:25:03 PM "Are we done yet? Mark, if it's OK, you think we can bring a steak and some birthday cake in here?".
Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Jeff Mason on January 17, 2006, 04:34:39 PM Hey, maybe someone went trolling through Columbia and found some vocal tapes. I would at least love to hear the cello overdub sessions -- those aren't on the SOT, and they must be around somewhere for them to put it on the backing track on the box set.

Haha, I was thinking the sessions for the entire album would fit on one CD... Title: Re: Pet Sounds Anniversary Post by: Mitchell on January 18, 2006, 07:15:20 AM They already do!
I LOVE the buildup of the verse of Heroes and Villains on SOT 17. Hitsville! I still haven't heard the Pet Sounds SOTs, so I guess I don't know what I'm missing there. I think a neatly arranged Good Vibrations sessions release would be awesome. Isn't there supposed to be a large number of alternate mixes? |
