Title: Smile Post by: sugarandspice on January 16, 2006, 05:12:41 PM hey hey,
I am sure this has already been done as a thread, but I am curious and I`ll ask anyhow.... What is the ratio of smile (finished product) to smileysmile fans here..... And if you were to hazzard a guess as to how the album were to go.... (before you knew how the were really listed) List them for me..... Xoxoxoxo, Suga Title: Re: Smile Post by: Matinee Idyll on January 16, 2006, 05:27:50 PM I don't understand the first question suga, but I thought Smile would be a 7 minute version of Heroes and Villains followed by 40 minutes of incidental animal noises/farting/drugged out laughter.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: sugarandspice on January 16, 2006, 05:36:13 PM How would you personally put the songs in order on smile
xoxoxoxoxoxo suga Title: Re: Smile Post by: SMiLEY on January 16, 2006, 05:59:31 PM I did a few of my own fanmixes before the official SMiLE came out, and I listened to as many fanmixes as I could lays hands on. I think all of us fans went, for the most part, a little too 'whole-hog' with the tracks. For example, my SMiLE ran about 8 or 9 minutes longer than BWPS and many sections were, to be immodest, quite cool. I had a great Vegetables outro with combined vox from IJWMFTT where Brian sang "Barnyard Billy loved his chickens," and like most folks mine ended with Surf's Up, the long Annie Wallace version which is a really really great version.
But in the end, I agree with almost all the choices made in the running order of BWPS. I would put in the aforementioned Barnyard Billy bit which is the fade to Vegetables, have another go at "You're Under Arrest," mix the 'do you's' in H&V a little lower, and that's about it, really. I'm sure others will disagree with me, but that is the beauty of SMiLE! It's so many things to so many people! Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 16, 2006, 06:04:59 PM She means do you like SMiLE or SMiLEY more, and then what is your SMiLE order.
Count me in for SMiLEY. My SMiLE: 1.Prayer 2.Do You Like Worms 3.Heroes And Villains 4.Old Master Painter/YAMS 5.Cabinessence 6.Holidays 7.Wonderful 8.Child Is Father Of The Man 9.Good Vibrations 10.I'm In Great Shape 11.I Wanna Be Around 12.Vegetables 13.Wind Chimes 14.Mrs. O'Leary's Cow 15.Love To Say Da-da 16.Surf's Up 17.You're Welcome Title: Re: Smile Post by: Old Rake on January 16, 2006, 06:09:07 PM I like Smile more but it is a tough call: there's lotsa love in my heart for Smiley.
Since I have like literally no freaking idea what would have been on Smile, I tend to follow the back cover listing. I think at one point, those were at least the SONGS, if not the order. They seem in random order, but have you tried it that way? It does kinda work all random like that. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Chris D. on January 16, 2006, 06:11:46 PM No "Look," Ian?
Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 16, 2006, 06:28:35 PM OOPS!
I was doing it from memory, I forgot that. Right before Chimes, like BWPS. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Jonas on January 16, 2006, 06:34:58 PM wheres the love for 'He Gives Speeches'?
Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 16, 2006, 06:59:14 PM None here.
I'll take She's Goin' Bald any day. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Jonas on January 16, 2006, 07:10:24 PM blasphemy!
question: did murry wilson ever sit in any of the sessions? and offtopic, but did he sit in during any of hte pet sounds sessions? i dunno if im crazy or if brian is sayin "dad" Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 16, 2006, 07:13:26 PM I believe he's there during the GOK sessions based on that, too. I'm glad you brought that up. Bri held the telephone up to the speakers so Murry could hear the Caroline session.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: Jonas on January 16, 2006, 07:45:37 PM thats exactly where i heard it, during the GOK sessions he said bob and then dad...sounded like he was in the room with the musicians...
anyone have anymore info? :) (sorry for hijacking the thread :p) Title: Re: Smile Post by: Jason on January 17, 2006, 08:23:31 AM I dig both Smile and Smiley Smile, they're inseparable. Wonderful pieces of music.
I haven't done a fan mix in years due to my gross misappropriation of Brian Wilson's genius. I was turning 3 minute pop songs into 20 minute prog songs (my 22 minute Good Vibrations is something to be feared, it's horrible). Title: Re: Smile Post by: king of anglia on January 17, 2006, 08:37:37 AM I dig both Smile and Smiley Smile, they're inseparable. Wonderful pieces of music. I was turning 3 minute pop songs into 20 minute prog songs (my 22 minute Good Vibrations is something to be feared, it's horrible). You haven't heard mine obviously. "Executed with all the lightness of touch of an Orang-utang (sic) with a sledgehammer" - Andrew. G. Doe no less. I, on the other hand, thought it was brilliant and actually quite exclusive as it uses the isolated vocals from the 45 version so nyer to Doe. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Bicyclerider on January 17, 2006, 08:46:13 AM My order for Smile:
Side One: Prayer Worms Heroes and Villains Cabinessence Old Master Painter Wonderful Child is Father Wonderful tag (mama mama . . . ) Side Two: Good Vibrations I'm in Great Shape Vegetables Wind Chimes The Elements (Mrs. O'Leary's Cow/Water chant/Dada) Surf's Up The Lord's Prayer (just the "amen" part at the end) Title: Re: Smile Post by: JRauch on January 17, 2006, 08:48:47 AM "The Lord's Prayer (just the "amen" part at the end)"
:o Did I miss something? Title: Re: Smile Post by: andy on January 17, 2006, 09:25:04 AM I believe he's there during the GOK sessions based on that, too. I'm glad you brought that up. Bri held the telephone up to the speakers so Murry could hear the Caroline session. Brian called Hal Blaine 'Dad' as a nickname or a joke, for some strange reason. You can hear it in a couple of SMiLE sessions, even (CIFOTM). Doesn't mean Murry wasn't there, but I don't think he was. Wasn't it Murry's suggestion to speed the tape up on Caroline No to make Brian sound younger? And I'm guessing he must've done that over the telephone. Neat. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Mitchell on January 17, 2006, 09:33:25 AM That would further cement Peter Reum's theory that the Vega-Tables skits were a way for Brian to make fun of Murry using Hal Blaine.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: mike thornton on January 17, 2006, 09:56:16 AM "Brian called Hal Blaine 'Dad' as a nickname or a joke, for some strange reason."
not to be patently obvious, but *dad* is just a shortening of daddy-o. my own "dad" was in the biz and i heard it frequently as a child in the 60's. anyone remember big daddy don garlits? same idea. Title: Re: Smile Post by: Bicyclerider on January 17, 2006, 10:00:06 AM I put the Lord's Prayer amen at the end based on Mike Vosse's understanding of how Brian wanted to end the album (it's in that Fusion interview, 1969)
Title: Re: Smile Post by: JRauch on January 17, 2006, 10:07:27 AM Thanks, I remember that interview. I assume Vosse meant some kind of "Our Prayer"-reprise, as at the end of "In Blue Hawaii".
Title: Re: Smile Post by: andy on January 17, 2006, 10:09:44 AM He was never specific in saying what the 'amen' would be. It could be anything, for all we know.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: Bosco82 on January 17, 2006, 12:59:47 PM My Smile Order
Side 1: 1. Our Prayer 2. Heroes And Villains 3. Do You Like Worms? 4. He Gives Speeches 5. Wonderful 6. With Me Tonight 7. Child Is The Father Of The Man 8. Cabin Essence Side 2: 1. The Elements (Fire, Wispering Winds, Water Chant, Coolin Dada Water, Workshop) 5. Vega-Tables 6. Surf's Up 7. The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine (Barnshine Fade) 8. You're Welcome Title: Re: Smile Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 01:52:17 PM I think Brian calling Hal Blaine "Dad" was actually a genuine (yet cheeky) acknowledgement of Hal's fatherly influence on Brian.
My Perfect Smile: Heroes And Villians: Smiley Version Vegetables: Smiley Version Fall Breaks She's Goin' Bald Little Pad Good Vibrations With Me Tonight Wind Chimes: Smiley Verison Gettin' Hungry Wonderful: Smiley Version Whistle In: Smiley Version Surf's Up: Heretofore-thought-to-not-exist Smiley Version Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 01:54:06 PM it STILL sounds like Murry saying "Nice, nice Brian" following Brian's Dad comment. To MY ears. But, I'm probably wrong.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: Joshilyn Hoisington on January 17, 2006, 01:59:59 PM I think part of the problem is that, for some reason, the socio-linguistic influences on people Murry's age in LA caused a lot of people on BB session tape to sound like Murry. It sounds weird, but it's true.
Do you really think Murry would shut up for 40 minutes at a session? "Nice Brian" then silence. Chuck only seems to have shut off the session tape a couple of times over the whole GOK session. Title: Re: Smile Post by: I. Spaceman on January 17, 2006, 02:08:44 PM I think Murry became kinder and gentler following the Rhonda debacle. But I'm sure you're right. I just choose to imagine Murry being there proud of Brian, just grooving on the sounds.
Title: Re: Smile Post by: Jonas on January 17, 2006, 02:25:30 PM and what Id really like to know, is whats burning in the studio? 8)
