Title: Vocals on "Here Comes The Night" (1967)
Post by: Glenn Greenberg on October 17, 2006, 01:55:39 PM
I've been listening to "Here Comes The Night" today, and it reminded me of a friendly disagreement I had with Andrew G. Doe a few months back, about who is singing lead on the song.

AGD said it was Carl, I said it was Brian.

After listening to the song today, over and over, I think I might have an answer:

I'm 99.9% sure that Brian sings the first verse
I think it MIGHT be Carl singing the second verse
And I'm 99.9% positive it's Brian singing the third verse

Anyone want to weigh in on this?

I've listened to that song as well as vocals-only track, and I think it's clearly Brian.

I think it's obvious that Brian sang the 1967 version. You only have to listen to the tone of Carl's voice in the LA Album version to see that.

I haven't got it to hand but who does Brad Elliots "Surf's Up!" book say it is...?

Surf's Up says Brian too as does the 2fer's.

Definitley Brian.
And because "What'd I say" gets the same question quite often, that is Carl singing lead.

I also have one lead vocal question:
Isn't that Carl sharing lead vocals with Mike during the verses in "A Thing Or Two"? I know, everywhere it says it's Brian, but I've been listening to that song today, and I am almost sure it is Carl. Am I wrong on this?

Wild Honey is also a song that the 2fer says Brian sings, but I'm pretty sure its Carl. At times it sounds like Brian though. Maybe they share the lead on that one too.

Wild Honey is Carl. I think with Brian you hear a little more of resonance. He just has a little extra to him that Carl matched in passion (no pun) but not in charisma.

Wild Honey is definitely Carl.

And hey! long time lurker, joined because I'm much more interested in vocal and instrument credits than the "scandal" stuff. So much so I'm the fool who spent about five hours changing the vocal credits at the Boys' wikipedia entry. ;D ;)

Carl definitely on lead, Brian definitely on the "Sweet, sweet, honey bee, eat it, eat it, eat it up honey" background vocals.
