Title: Joanna Newsom's new album
Post by: the captain on September 17, 2006, 08:08:33 AM
Has anyone else heard Joanna Newsom's new album Ys, for which VDP arranged strings? I got my copy yesterday. It is the sort of album that I think deserves repeated listenings before comments, but it is interesting enough that I look forward to those listenings.

I don't have her new album, but I have her last album. Do you ever get used to that voice? It sounds to me like Kate Bush on helium.
The music is OK, though.

Yeeessss.. I got it. It leaked, so every fan has it, but I will absolutely definetly buy it on LP when it arrives.

..and yeah, I LOVE the new album! The whole album is a dream collaboration come true. Van Dyke Parks arrangements are very tasteful. I though the arrangement on the first track bas a bit disjointed, but I got justed to it after some listens, and the other tracks are totally marvelous!

I rank joanna and her music up there with Syd Barrett, Brian wilson and so on. Damn!
The album is a true masterpiece. Her voice has improved also. Its stronger and she has gotten better control over it, I think.

It's just come out in the UK, I listened to the first 3 tracks yesterday. Sounded fantastic, and the voice isn't irritating. I was glued to the speakers. Any fan of Van Dyke Parks needs this record! 60s California meets medieval England - what more could you want? I agree it needs to be taken in small doses though.
