Brian had a nice little streak of creativity going on in late '76/early '77, and this gives us another look at it. It's too bad that Sinatra turned this and "Still I Dream of It" down...

Very bad decision from Frank, if he made it. Those two numbers would have become MASTERPIECES, sung by him with his orchestra behind.
One of the too many instances when people did not trust Brian's genius, and Music suffered as a result.

Most people, even "fans", do just lipservice to Pet Sounds and "the hits", and listen with ears stuffed to everything else Brian did, especially anything from his "solo career", and its whereabouts. Look, for a sterling example, at the audience reaction, or lack of it, to Al & C's "Love You" live. They seem zombies.

There is a reason I post only here... here is the ONLY place where most people seem to really GET Brian (and the Beach Boys, really). WHY he was a genius. WHY the BBs were a great band, maybe the greatest. Hint: not for "I Get Around", good song and #1 hit as it is. Elsewhere they don't... too stuck with the damn "commercial appeal", the damn rankings, and the non-musical trivia, minutiae and gossip. They seem to have, mostly, the artistic sensibility of a ton of cast iron.

Just my Brianista's half-cent, of course.

This was probably hashed out a zillion years ago, but is there any evidence/indication that:

A) The songs were offered to Sinatra
B) The offer actually made it to him
C) He then turned them down

Yes it was discussed here. Click on the YouTube link I posted before to hear Brian personally talk about the song and Sinatra in 1977. Unfortunately it was before the meeting itself so no follow ups and info on what transpired. But a meeting was definitely planned as Brian specifically mentions it.  And the rest of the thread is pretty interesting too.

It is interesting that both examples cited (Frere Jacques and Row, row the boat') have been used by Brian. Interesting but not surprising.
Also interesting that this canon idea goes with the 'eternal now' quote Brian made.

And I agree, it's unfortunate that some of the audiences don't appreciate some of Brian's work enough. They have been sold a particular image of Beach Boys' music and it's the summer, fun idea that some seem to like best.

I always wondered why there was no collaboration with Dean Martin in any way. The connections were so close even before Carl became his son-in-law. "Still I dream of it" may not have been a perfect fit for him but I could totally see him doing some of the other songs.

You know who would’ve done a kick ass cover of it? Tom Waits. I can hear it in my head and everything…
