Andy Paley was a guest on WFMU this afternoon and sat in for several hours along with Spongebob's Tom Kenny on the Todd-o-phonic Todd show. He discussed Brian, his group The Paleys, SpongeBob, his musical career, etc. Even if the Brian/BB's content wasn't at the forefront, it was a fascinating interview especially to hear about Andy's career and all the people he's known or worked with. There was a Brian anecdote I had never heard before in there too. AND...Todd spun a handful of solo Brian cuts where Andy was involved which you never, and I mean NEVER, hear on broadcast radio. He spun some cool tracks from The Paleys and other cuts Andy worked on as well.

It's not often Andy is interviewed the way it seems, and the playlist of the show was pretty interesting too...so I'd recommend giving it a listen!

Thank you for posting this. It's astounding how much good the Boys are sitting on and won't release. Digital only release would still be sufficient for a lot of us folks. We aren't getting any younger. I feel bad for all of the fans that didn't make it long enough to hear some of the recent box sets.

I love the work Andy did with Brian, whatever may the naysayers say. I have noticed that the Paley Sessions have been struck by a revisionist wind not unlike that affecting SMiLE.

It serms that some "experts" have an agenda that everything unreleased by Brian had better keep unreleased, because it is not Pet Sounds 2. I could not disagree more.

I see they also payed Jerry Lee Lewis' "It was the Whiskey talkin' (not me)" - the rare version from the Dick Tracy soundtrack! It was later re-recorded in very different form (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqANsJ2tmIQ) for Jerry Lee's "Young Blood" album (1995) which was also produced by Andy Paley (and if I'm notmistaken a certain Mark Linett worked on it, too).

I wholeheartedly agree there!  Unless I didn't catch it, did they play or mention previously unheard material in this podcast that hasn't leaked?

It was very enjoyable to hear how deep they went for the playlist, even beyond the Wilson/Paley songs. Some really cool stuff that also shows how good Andy Paley is at what he does!

One that I wish they played was "The Best Day Ever", from the original SpongeBob movie soundtrack. Andy created what I still think is among the finest replications of the Brian Wilson sound and production/arranging style from 1965. I call it one of the best Brian Wilson songs Brian didn't write! If you get beyond Tom Kenny singing it as SpongeBob, it's a pretty great track all around.

And also for those who haven't heard the interview, don't miss the part when Andy describes the time Brian came to the studio to record parts on the SpongeBob music. A great story, and classic Brian.

Re: The recordings. Andy didn't say anything about a release of the material he wrote with Brian, only that the two wrote a ton of songs that sadly haven't been heard and might never be heard. But for what is out there, add me to those who would want some kind of a release before it's too late for any of us. As mentioned, a digital upload scenario would be terrific, and the BW site has already uploaded some unreleased gems in the past so it's not impossible. It doesn't need a box set with all the trimmings and a high price tag for fans, it's 2024 after all. And a similar campaign could be attached to the release to get the word out for those who aren't as aware of that music and that era, just get some digital press moving and people talking and the fans who want it will find it.
